  • The elk hair caddis should be a staple in all dry fly fishermans boxes, if they aren't in there already. This fly is probably one of the most effective and versatile dry flies ever created, and is right along side flies like the adams. This is relatively easy to tie, and once you get the hang of it, you can tie quite a few of them in an hour. Fill your box in short time, and have a fly that will fish well at most rivers and streams throughout America, and the rest of the world. The target species is obviously trout, but Ive caught bluegill, bass, and even some saltwater species on this fly before as well.
    So on my last trip, to Colorado Springs, this fly was the same pattern that Colin ended up landing 6 fish with! It was the most productive fly of the two day trip. So its not only very effective, but relatively easy and cheap to tie. The only expensive part of this fly is the hackle. But once you get a neck, you should be able to tie 100's or even thousands of these flies, in varying sizes. The most common color for hackle is brown, but you can tie it in with other colors as well. Just try to match caddis coloration for your specific area.
    So as always I am listing the materials used on this fly. And I have teamed up with www.flyartist.com to be able to offer you a discount code. Type in McFlySubs at checkout!

    I LIKE the idea of weaving the thread though the head of the fly to keep it from spinning when fishing. Never understood why that happened to my flys let alone how to keep it from spinning like it did. Thanks! Also, like the idea of whip finishing before cutting the excess elk hair. Well done, good idea!
    Keep the scripture flowing, we need the inspiration. ATB!

      @@McFlyAngler btw I have a nice stack of moose hair I got via garage sale. (1$)Unfortunately it was just plucked from a road kill(alaskan) moose. Could you direct me to some flies made with moose hair? I made a mouse with it so far. Very primitive looking but I think it will work. Any point in the right direction would be welcome thanks again mcfly.

    Do you find the fly any less durable without the wire ribbing holding the body hackle in place? Thanks for the video!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 5 lety +2

      No... never had one come apart, I hate adding wire to dry flies unless necessary, as the wire just adds more weight.

  • @seanmooney3907

    Nice tie. You could probably have pulled out those trapped fibers with your dubbing needle. I know the fish won't mind though. I wish I could get out of my own way to go fishing, but I have been rather depressed and isolating since my wife passed. I hope I will re-surface soon. All the best, Sean

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 6 lety

      Thanks Sean! Yeah honestly I didn’t even see the fibers until after I took pictures and finished the video. You see more with the macro camera than the naked eye.
      I’ve been praying for you Sean. Keep your head up, soon you will find dry land to rest your feet on. I didn’t know your wife, and I only know you through here, but I’m sure she would rather have you happy than sad. If you lived close I’d take you out fishing man!

    • @seanmooney3907
      @seanmooney3907 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for caring. I know you are right and she would want me to be happy. I am just having a bit of a hard time getting loose of the mud. Grief is difficult. I hear it comes in waves. I haven't experienced the waves, it has been pretty much slow and steady for me. All the best, Sean

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 6 lety

      Im sorry Sean, I personally am lucky enough to not have anyone closer than a grandfather pass away. I did have a girlfriend once pass on, and we were close, but nothing like a wife. I can only imagine how hard it is. I know its easier said than done to pick yourself back up again. So I am not sure if you are a believer or not, but here are a few bible verses for you just incase it might help.
      Psalms 34:18 - "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit"
      Psalms 18:28 - "You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light."
      With these two verses, I hope you can find comfort with knowing that God can, and wants to help you through the tough times. Even if it seems like there is no end, he has the ability to give you comfort. He wants to help you though the tough times, and he will if you let him.
      Philippians 1:23-24 "I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account."
      This verse tells how much better your wife is being with God. No more pain and suffering, just happiness and joy. While its very hard to do, we should celebrate the passing on of our loved ones. For they are in a better place, and we can have comfort that we will see them again one day.
      My mother's first husband passed away (when she was in her late 20's). A freak accident. But they were together for about 10 years I think. I never met the man because I came about much later. HAHA But she would be a great person to talk to, and help tell you how she learned to cope and get through the hard times. If you would like to talk with her, I can somehow pass her contact information along to you. Not sure if it will help or anything, but sometimes it does help to just talk with someone that has gone through the same thing.

    • @seanmooney3907
      @seanmooney3907 Před 6 lety

      Thanks man, I appreciate your efforts. I am a Christian and do appreciate the bible verses. I do get comfort from Church (when I attend) I haven't been so good at attending lately. I am usually up all hours of the night and sleep through the morning. I am not liking this schedule but it seems to be consistent since I lost my wife. I am in hopes all things will return to normal cycles with time. All the best, and God bless you and your family. Sean

      Thanks! So I haven’t fished around me for a while, the area has had some harsh things happen. First a big fire that kept everyone out of the forest due to being shut down for a while. Then we have had some heavy rains that are washing the ash from the fire into our rivers which is killing off our fish. So, I have to take longer trips.

    I'm looking into getting a new vise and was wondering if you had any suggestions.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  Před 6 lety

      That depends on your price range and what size flies you plan on regularly tying. The Rensetti Traveler that I use is great for anything under 2/0 hooks. I love it. But its $169. I hear good things about the griffin odyssey, which is similar to the Rensetti that I use, just less expensive. I personally haven't used it, but many people like it. Not sure how well it will do on really large hooks either, or on really small ones. But for normal hooks im sure its great. Could be good on the extremes as well, not sure though. But I can get you a discount on that one. Buy it from fly artist, and type in a discount code at checkout. Here is a link to it. www.flyartist.com/collections/griffin-vises/products/griffin-odyssey-spider-cam-vise?variant=12720908664891 Just type in McFlySubs for your discount on that.
      For larger saltwater/bass/pike type tying, I recommend a Regal (which I can get you a discount as well, with the same discount code above). www.flyartist.com/collections/regal-vises. Or a Peak vice for something less expensive... amzn.to/2wQ58hv. Or a Dyna King for something more expensive. Dyna Kings are awesome! Hold hooks about as good as anything else out there. amzn.to/2wQUrKE

      Glad to help, you will enjoy the Rensetti (if thats the one you were talking about). I love mine, and for 99% of my ties it does perfect. Like I said though, for anything over 2/0 I would prefer something a bit different. With a more substantial jaw.
