  • Academy of Realist Art UK is now The Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art.
The Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art (EAFA) is committed to the continuance of traditional modes of teaching drawing and painting and creating the new masters of today.
Through learning the time honored methods of the nineteenth century academies, artists first master the language of drawing and painting, building a pathway to more truthful expression. Just as musicians must first learn their instrument or writers must study language before they can articulate their creativity, the visual artist must achieve the skill set that will unlock their creative potential. When the artist can confidently paint the most technically demanding of subjects, they are truly only limited by their imagination. Through study and commitment, the Academy students open themselves to new levels of artistic freedom.
No previous experience is assumed, and no portfolio presentation is required for admission. We welcome all levels of experience from complete novice to professional artist. We believe artistic skill can be learned like any other skill such as writing, music, or learning a language. Even the highest standards of achievement can be reached through simple step by step instruction.
Our instructors give one to one guidance and tailor tuition to meet the personal goals of each student who studies with us.
Our self-paced curriculum allows for flexible learning opportunities. With full or part-time options, students progress at a pace best suited to them. Daytime, evening and weekend hours available.

I don't know how to draw but these people have amazing skills harmonizing their minds, hands, emotions, eyes, and creation.

Can the lessons be taught just by online video? Because a lot of people would love to sign up for online courses for this (me included). The result samples in this video is amazing. The best I've seen so far on CZcams. Especially the copies of the Old Masters. That's the standard of how good your techniques are, in my opinion.

is it best to learn to draw while standing with a VERTICAL board or sitting using a slanted board....ideally speaking ? (of course assuming the drawing that I would be coping would be the same angle)

Ideally work standing up so you can step back regularly and see if the drawing is working as a whole.

you have to learn to do art right,, before you can go to wrong,,,,,,such as?? Picasso who did art like a master and then off to his own art world,,,

The best way to learn and understand art as an artist is to draw from nature not making copies . Because in the end you are not an artist. You become just a copying machine that is lost inside a tehnique you can't get rid of. Put all there people to draw real life thing man, otherwise it's all pointless.

Catalin Iulian All ARA students learn to draw and paint working directly from nature. The flat copies are for workshop purposes. All exercises done are intended to be only exercises with the intent that students find their unique expressive voice once they have mastered materials, technique and understanding. Learn your instrument, then write a song.

Catalin, that is simply not true. When copying a master you aquire the incredible knowledge of that artist, his expressions and maybe 1500 years of previously knowledge how to handle a brush and make even more beautiful things on the canvas. In my classes those who sadly do not understand what knowledge and freedom of expression is, and tries to paint something "from within" or "express feelings" or other fashionable expressions have one thing in common, their paintings all look the same. Exactly the same...they will not be able to get rid of general perceptions of how the world looks, that's why.
