  • My Adventures With Superman just is not letting up as every episode so far has been all of equal quality with that quality being great and now episode 5 might just be the best so far in an episode that feels like it purposefully answers my main complaints with the previous episode avoiding the show falling into a formula at the exact right time it was becoming noticeable. This video will be my review of My Adventures With Superman Season 1 Episode 5 titled “You Will Believe A Man Can Lie”

I think though Lois’s negative reaction to Clark keeping a secret identity from her is not entirely rational, it makes sense with what we learned about her baggage from her dad. All the characters in this show have flaws, which is a good thing.

What’s absurd about her getting hypocritically angry was that..
Lois lied to Clark and jimmy about what Perry White told her about the robots story to get them to join her (1st episode)
She lied to Clark about the text Perry white sent her telling them to come back
Clark then saves her life and stands up for her in front of Perry white
Oh, and Lois steals the other anchors badges and then coerces Clark and Jimmy to lie.
      And so on…
It’s flat out absurd that she thinks she has an ounce of integrity to judge Clark for not trusting her with the biggest and most dangerous secret ever.

Obviously want to ignore the credibility that DC comics Injustice Gods(The storyline is set in a parallel universe within the DC Comics' Multiverse, where Superman has become a tyrant and established a new world order after the Joker tricked him into killing Lois Lane and destroying Metropolis. @@rabd3721 I think the big issue that can result from this is how they handle the inevitable reconciliation. It could go one of 3 ways:
      1) Lois is proven right and Clark basically has to grovel and admit he was wrong about not coming clean about being Superman.
      2) Superman/Clark is proven right, and Lois has to confront the reality that she may indeed take after her father more than she'd like to admit, and come to terms with the realization that maybe she's got some issues to work through.
      3) A combination of 1 & 2, where both realize their faults and come to terms with those and ultimately end up all the closer for it.
My obvious hope is that they go down path 3, because truthfully while I overall side with Clark more (being Superman is kind of his private thing and Lois is not at this stage of their relationship entitled to it), he was being cagey even when actively being called out which was kind of bad. But Lois definitely had no moral high ground here, because she's made it clear she has no problems lying or withholding information from other people to get what she wants... she just doesn't like it when it's done to her. She has a very self-centered notion of morality, where when she does it it's fine, when someone else does it to her it's suddenly bad. Very human, sure, but definitely doesn't paint a pretty picture about her ethical perspective on the world.

What’s different here is that while Lois also figures out the secret identity, we know she did, and she immediately confronts Clark about it. Unlike Amber, who just hides the fact she knows and doesn’t confront Mark. They’re both new to being a hero, so it makes sense they’d worry about sharing their identities. Lois reason is more oriented on her traumas and her tendencies of being quite a shitty person when it comes to getting her stories, and she showed no signs of that changing with superman, so besides being on her own world, there is no believable reason for her to be angry at clark when she is just being an hypocrite.
Both are in the wrong, and i definitely prefer MAWS over invincible identity reveal, but both aren't justified, neither are good since it's cheap drama that won't last 2 episodes, especially when both situations could be resolved in the spot if the writers allowed the hero character to give a better reason to defend themselves, instead of just 2 phrases and give up afterwards.

Except for the fact Lois not knowing Clark was Superman did not endanger her in anyway. You can argue Clark was misleading her, but Clark is entitled to privacy and he wished to not share he was Superman because it is a big burden for anyone to carry. Outside of his parents, Lois is probably the first person to know Clark's secret and there is no reason she should, unless they officially started dating and even then building that kind of trust takes time. He also had several good reasons not to share his secret with Lois, considering her grand plan at first was to expose all of Superman's secrets and Clark had no guarantee she would change her mind even if he did tell her the truth. Lois might have changed her intentions after episode 4, but Clark had no way of knowing that. Lois was not in anyway entitled to know Clark's secret, and Lois forced him into revealing it by throwing herself off of a roof, giving him no choice in the matter. It was honestly kind of a b*tch move, when she could have respected his privacy and be patient with him until he was ready to share.
When Lois lied, she lied about information that directly involved Clark and Jimmy to deliberately manipulate them into pursuing a dangerous story, endangering not only their lives but their jobs and livelihoods too so that Lois could chase a story and get acclaim. From Lois perspective. She has spent some time reporting about Superman getting injured and going into dangerous situations. But then she figured out Supermans identity. He became more real, he can became somebody she deeply cared for. You can see this, with her worrying about whether he is flame proof or chaining herself to a super strong man is kinda irrational, but it is born of a fear she could lose somebody she cared about. When superman is hurt, Clark is hurt She was left on a roof, probably coming up with all the worst possible scenarios. Then he actually does come back hurt. Lois has been shown to struggle with being vulnerable. The relieve and anxiety that she was bottling up, come out as momentary anger. but above all, she spent the entire episode trying to make him come clean, she literaly told him to his face that she knew, and he still refused to.

Lois is being kind of hypocritical here, in my opinion. The FIRST THING she does when she meets Clark and Jimmy professionally was lie to them. It almost cost them their jobs too. I get that she hates being lied to, and a lie is a lie no matter what form, but her lie and his secret are two completely different situations. His being a much more understandable one.
Though it had good intentions, Lois's lie was admittedly a manipulative one. She wanted the jump on a dangerous story and dragged along two newbies who had no business participating in something even she shouldn't be chasing. Her ambition in revealing the truth about the dangerous tech put all three of them at risk. Clark could have handle it (and did) since he was Kryptonian, but Lois didn't know that. For all she knew, Clark really was just some guy from Kansas. And besides, he legit felt hurt for being used by her, yet she has the gall to throw her shit at his feet when things are kept from her? Espeically when his secret is motivated by more considerate reasons rather than manipulative ones, no less?
Clark's secret is kept that way to protect himself and people he knows and loves. Think about if the media one day revealed Superman's identity. The government would be on that shit like that! Ma and Pa Kent would be harrassed to no end, if not straight up abducted by secret services. Clark himself would have to go into hiding and not be able to publicly save people as much as he desires. And of course, the wellbeing of Lois and others at the Daily Planet would be used as a ploy against him, by government or otherwise. Its a damn secret for a damn good reason, Lois, and Clark has every right to be afraid of its exposure! Also, they barely know each other. She's getting mad at him like this secret had been kept from her all her life! Its hard to sympathize with Lois's perspective when she's a pot calling the kettle black. Let up on the kid, girl. All he wants to do is help without anyone getting hurt in the process.
Based on how much fluff has occured between them both in this series, I'm sure it'll all work itself out in the end. But goddamn, Lois. Take accountability for your OWN lies, and trust that a secret like Clark's is a secret for the good of everyone that knows him, including and especially YOU!

The writing term would be "darkest before the dawn." Jimmy has been third-wheeled in the comics since about 1991 when Lois first learned the secret (and to a lesser extent before then by Ma & Pa Kent still being alive Post-Crisis.
Basically, every situation where Superman/Clark would go to his best friend Jimmy (who didn't know his secret) suddenly got supplanted by Lois, the fiancé (later wife) who knew his secret and countless writers have struggled for literally decades now trying to make Jimmy relevant.
This show looks to be both going for an early reveal for Lois, but, I suspect as well, a situation where Jimmy will also soon learn the secret and likely play a role in getting Clark and Lois over their kerfuffle... thereby establishing him as best friend to both who is a trusted secret keeper; i.e. a way for him to actually remain relevant within the stories here instead of struggling for a way for the dynamic work while still having him ignorant of the secret.
Ironically, I think it was likely the Tomasi Superman run with a married Lois & Clark and their 10-ish son Jon (who obviously knew his dad's secret) that probably paved the way a story where Lois, Clark and Jimmy (basically filling the young sidekick role of Jon) can be a functional trio with the secret kept between the three of them.

This was the best episode yet of my adventures with Superman. It continues the issues that Clark, Lois, and Jimmy are dealing with from the previous episode, while introducing new complications. Clark is completely oblivious about Lois being on to his secret while focusing on how the mysterious tech is endangering lives, while the tech itself seems connected to Krypton, while also dealing with his own developing feelings for Lois, and being introduced to Deathstroke, Amanda Waller, and a general who's most likely Lois' father, Sam Lane. Superman's confrontation with task force X is definitely his most difficult battle yet, and implies that Superman's powers are fluctuating, possibly due to not knowing what he's truly capable of. While it's clear that something happened to the general to make him be distrustful of Superman, he at least has enough integrity to not risk civilians to defeat Superman, unlike Amanda Waller who basically behaves as she usually does, doing whatever it takes to stop the threat, even if it's morally questionable. Lois is dealing with trying to expose Clark's secret of being Superman, while also dealing with her own issues with secrets and lies. I honestly don't like how Lois exposes Clark by risking her own life, but it is sad and understandable how her relationship with Clark is taking a turn for the worse. In all honesty, I think Clark should be more angry with Lois because him being Superman isn't a secret that Lois needed to know, and I am not sure that the approach Lois took to expose Clark was the right thing to do. Clark even tried to tell Lois the truth in the previous episode, but Lois being frustrated with Superman's secrets made him pull back, and Lois' reaction to Clark exposing himself sort of justified him not telling her his secret. Jimmy deals with being a third wheel, Steve Lombard trolling his posts, and Steve even making a good point about Jimmy's relationship with Lois and Clark, ending with Jimmy being forgotten about due to Lois and Clark dealing with their own issues. Jimmy even gets kidnapped by the end of the episode by something that resembles an ape. I don't think that it's gorilla Grodd because he's a Flash villain. I won't know until the next episode, but it could be Ultra Humanite, an enemy of Superman that resembles an ape. I also don't know what is going to happen with the trio of Lois, Clark, and Jimmy, since things ended on a bad note with them, but the complications between them might make their relationship stronger.

To be fair, this show is making it clear they have no issues taking other DC Rogues and throwing them in here. Slade/Deathstroke is a Nightwing/Teen Titans villain, yet here he is, so Grodd being a Flash villain definitely doesn't preclude him being introduced here either.
That being said, I kind of don't feel like this is Grodd. Not sure why, just doesn't feel like this is how they'd introduce Grodd if that is their plan at all, but I fully admit that I could be totally wrong on this.

I was kind of surprised that they had Lois figure out Superman's identity this early. I thought that would be saved for a mid-season finale or something, but I'm glad that didn't happen. With Clark being so inexperienced both as a superhero and with his powers, it makes sense that Lois would be able to put the pieces together. I didn't really have a problem with her reaction. Jumping off the building to get Clark to reveal his identity is not really new for Lois. Plus, after giving Clark multiple chances to tell the truth, she probably felt hurt that this was the only way for Clark reveal his secret. It's also extremely likely that her reaction also comes from the emotional baggage with her father. He didn't tell Lois the truth about how much her mother was sick and I assume that put a huge strain on their relationship. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the whole keeping secrets is another way of lying comes from too.
Now Clark wasn't in the wrong. He's still getting used to being a superhero, doesn't know anything about his home planet or where he comes from, he's gaining more powers over time and Lois deliberately wanted to publish all of Superman's secrets when even he doesn't know who he is yet. It makes perfect sense why he didn't feel comfortable telling Lois the truth. Even if she didn't find that last piece to the murder board in the previous episode, I think it was just a matter of time before Lois found out given her determinate to get a real story for the Daily Planet and Clark's inexperience. Both of their reactions are understandable given their personalities and positions. I am excited to see how they are able to patch things up while they search for Jimmy. Their cute moments have been a surprising highlight of the series for me so far.

I think some of the drama surrounding the scene with Clark and Lois arguing about Clark lying stems from the bad taste the Invincible show left with Mark and Amber's argument scene.
In Invincible, the show made it seem that Mark was somehow actually in the wrong and spent a good chunk focusing it and Amber being downright irrational and hypocritical, with no real reason to be.
We have yet to see what happens in Ep. 6 of MAwS, but what makes the ending of Ep. 5 feel more appropriate is that it doesn't side with who's right and who's wrong, both Clark and Lois were being irrational and hypocritical, but it's easy to understand as they JUST HAD to deal with adrenaline-inducing situations. Clark just came back from a fight that ACTUALLY gave him a hard time, and Lois was freaking out of her mind, and seeing Clark actually hurt didn't help.
Secondly, unlike Amber, Lois didn't hide the truth that she knew, but granted, we don't know how long she knew in between episodes, but she didn't play Clark like a fool, she was trusting him to eventually tell her and only snapped when Clark tried to downplay a life-threatening fight.

Lois gave Clark so much chances to tell her his secret and in the end she had to jump off a building to get the truth out of him. I understand why some might feel like your friend being Superman would be a cool reveal, but if you need to jump off a building to get them to admit it, then I can imagine you might feel like they didn’t trust you enough to tell you. And that would feel like a betrayal, especially with the backstory of Lois’ father always keeping her in the dark.
I think some people are looking at this situation in a vacuum and only considering the fact that Lois lied on the day they met. Besides, you should seriously just let the writers do their job before you start harping on them for “bad writing”. I prefer to always be optimistic and give a story the benefit of the doubt. I think the backgrounds were going for a classic 90's shojo style for the backgrounds where distant cityscapes are abstracted down to line drawings and bloby watercolors. It's used a lot in Sailor Moon and more retro anime to save resources and draw focus. If it's executed well, it has a dreamy nostalgic feeling. The way it is in this episode feels like a mistake the way the city becomes white line drawings seemingly abruptly near the horizon.
I don't think they pulled it off quite yet in this episode, but I think it comes into itself a little later in the season with how it chooses to omit details more successfully. I love that retro, less detailed background art in city anime, personally. Detailed, intricate backgrounds absolutely have their time and place, but I prefer the more lush colorful abstractions. However, two wrongs never make a right, Lois was wrong with how she lied to Clark and Jimmy, and also for not understanding that some secrets must remain a secret. Journalists often dont care about the consequences of telling a story, whether the story is true or not.

She accused him of trying to force himself on her, causing him to lose his job, his marriage, and was thrown into prison before the police finally checked the security camera outside the building her car was near. Once the evidence was proven, she confessed, though the damage was already done.

I feel that "You Will Believe A Man Can Lie" should have been pushed back by at least one or two episodes. Lois's feeling of betrayal just doesn't land, and neither does the line about what they could have been. There really just wasn't enough time for Clark and Lois to bond and grow as a potential couple before this moment.
And we've never gotten a stated reason Clark was keeping his idenity a secret. So his excuse about being afraid Lois was going to publish his secrets just rings hollow. He was already keeping his powers a secret before Lois made that statement, and that still doesn't explain why he'd keep his powers a secret from Jimmy.
I think it's just expected that Clark would have a secret identity, so the show never stopped to give us an in character reason.

agreed. i think the series would work even better if they had her do some ground work to find out, maybe have her find the truth, not from seeing it in his pocket, but by seeking out an edition of that magazine that is intact, having her spend an episode going to smallville and questioning people there because while her brain is telling her its clark, she still doesnt want to belive it.
and then, after she is certain, have this episode.

For me it’s easy to tell where they got the inspiration from for the revile, they are reminiscent of the original superman movies with Christopher Reave in them. The one problem that I have with Lois finding out the truth is that it feels too early for me, they should have left for the second season or leave it as a cliff hanger at the end of the first season. For me Lois and Clark’s relationship hasn’t fully matured yet. It still feels like they just met last week. One of the reasons why the producers should have waited, is to make the audience crave fro the revile to happen in. Other superman tv shows with a Lois and Clark relationship have wasted much longer. The 90s show “Lois and Clark and the new adventure of superman”, didn’t have Lois finding out until the start of the third season. And smallville took even longer with Lois finding out 5 seasons after her original introduction.

Tbh, Deathstroke feels like a hypocrit. He says that they're the good guys, but he flat-out destroyed the support beam of a bridge that very clearly had heavy traffic. And no, I don't think him thinking that Superman was secretly some kind of villain excuses this. At least the guy in charge of the operation had the brains to realize that letting the people on the bridge die was not a good idea. Amanda Waller, on the other hand, very clearly had tunnel vision and was totally willing to sacrifice the people on the bridge.

a big thing isn't so much that Lois is angry about clark lying to her, but rather than clark shows he doesn't trust her. She's been shown before to have trust issues about stuff such as her dad lying to her about her mom and other stuff in their past, and she's opened up to clark about that. Plus there was the part of the first episode where Lois lied to Clark and he got upset at her about it, and they later made up and promised they wouldn't lie to each other again. So even though Clark is justified in keeping his secret, it's clear based on what Lois said about superman and stuff that he doesn't trust her while all she did was worry about him being hurt. It hurts being told that the person you care about in a relationship doesn't trust you, and when you already have trust issues, that hurts a lot more. Clark is still right, but he (and really both of them) could've handled the situation better, but emotions gets the better of them

Seemed like Clark was still at the early stages where he was just trying to muster up enough courage to tell Lois how he felt and maybe ask her out on a date.

    • @AtomicSuperMe
      @AtomicSuperMe Před rokem +1

@@BCBaron I think it’s been about a month since they first met, but that’s kind of just speculation cause there isn’t a real timeline, but it does feel like there’s been some gaps between episodes so at the least a few weeks.
And yeah, nobody is saying Clark needs to tell her everything. Clark was right to want to keep his life secret and he doesn’t owe that to her. BUT that doesn’t mean she can’t feel hurt by him telling and showing he doesn’t trust her. That’s the heart of the issue.
And Clark could’ve been better as well. Nobody is saying he needed to tell her everything, but he at least could’ve been a little more upfront that he doesn’t feel comfortable about some stuff or doesn’t want to talk to her about it yet rather than continuing to deny it when she basically tells him she knows
