    Well well!
    We lost you for a while on this old Canadian CZcams feed...back a few weeks, I was lying around with covid ( got over it in 11 days) and I was following you daily. Then I saw only videos of you at state parks, driving around in your van, etc. Nice, great, but I wanted more RAGBRAI.
    So I've just returned from a five day canoeing trip in northern Ontario, and upon getting home to reception and Internet, there you both are, finishing your cycling trip .
    Boy, if I happen to make it there next year, or some year soon, I'll be telling everyone that it was Laura on the move who inspired me. I cannot stress enough how delightful your coverage of this adventure was . You walk a perfect line between the too meek and and the too expressive. If you ever do swear, I'm glad you kept it out of your presentations. Blessings to you both.
    You heroes of mine now.
    One criticism; consider not supporting new balance. There are other shoe companies, who support better politics and rights than NB. Check it out.
    Thank you for your amazing efforts and the rich content that you have harvested from this obviously colossal event.

    I have some friends that do it every year. They organized the biggest group they've ever organized to go with them this year. I have considered it but it doesn't seem like my thing. It is pan flat and not a lot of scenery. I can be introverted, so the social aspect would tire me out. Maybe I will try it out when I work up the courage.
    Good job hanging tough and hanging in. Sometimes you can get mentally defeated. It takes something to snap us out of it and motivate us.

    • @LauraOnTheMove
      @LauraOnTheMove  Před rokem +3

      We are two big introverts and it was perfect to be able to socialize and meet new people but also just have time alone too. You can have a little conversation in line and still get away from it all. Maybe less if you’re in a big group but everyone would be like respectful if you just wanted to bike the day solo at your own pace too!

    • @DaveCM
      @DaveCM Před rokem +1

      @@LauraOnTheMoveIf I decide to do it next year, I hope you do it again too. I'd like to ride with you for a while. It would be fun. I just watched some more of your other videos and realized that you started cycling THIS YEAR!!! That made what you did incredibly impressive!!! My helmet is off to you! I am an avid cyclist and have been ridding for over 35 years. I know how hard that had to have been. Keep on training and do it again next year and compare the difference.

    • @jeffg.6110
      @jeffg.6110 Před rokem +1

      Just to clarify: yes, the scenery is a bit redundant with cornfields, soybeans, little towns & intermittent trees, but Iowa is definitely NOT flat. It’s flat compared to Colorado or Appalachia, obviously, but overall I would describe it as rolling hills. Look at a Grant Wood painting; listen to the RAGBRAI riders, etc. Especially on the western side of the state (along the Missouri) and the eastern side of the state (along the Mississippi). Again, it’s relative… but certainly not “pan flat.”

    • @DaveCM
      @DaveCM Před rokem

      @@jeffg.6110 no, it is very flat. I've seen the elevation profile. I guess "flat" is relative. I am used to doing rides of 75 to 100 miles with 8,000 to 10,000 feet of climbing in one day. So, 12,000 feet of elevation over several days isn't anything. Even where I live, a 50 mile ride will have about 3,500 feet and I do that a couple of times a week at least with shorter rides thrown in and often 65 mile ride. So, 12,000 over several days is pan flat to me. I'm not a casual cyclist. Oh, someone I ride with regularly did do it this year and she was glad it was over. Her complaints: flat and nothing to look at but corn. So,...

    • @jeffg.6110
      @jeffg.6110 Před rokem

      @@DaveCM Yes, as I already admitted a few times in my original post, “flat” is relative. Apparently I should have known to state it a few more times. I made the mistake of thinking others, not just experienced road cyclists, might read the post too. My fault. That said, while “flat” is relative, the term “pan flat” is not; it denotes little to no elevation changes. Iowa is not pan flat. It’s not even in the top 10 flattest states. Experienced riders may dismiss, even express contempt for the elevation changes, but casual riders - which comprise a big portion of RAGBRAI participants - will not. That was my point. You, Dave, obviously have nothing to worry about… at least on that front.
      If varied scenery and challenging elevation are key criteria for your successful cycling trip, though, I’d look elsewhere. That’s not at all what attracts ppl to RAGBRAI.

    It seems like a really fun thing to do. Can you let us know what the costs are from the very beginning to the end. Seems like there was a lot of food you had to pay for and I imagine there was a fee you had to pay put your tent up everywhere

    • @LauraOnTheMove
      @LauraOnTheMove  Před rokem +2

      Yes! Our Q&A coming up will answer more in depth, but entry was $175ish each and that covered the tent campsite and daily bag transport. We paid for a charter transport for us and bikes from landing to sargeant bluff at $175 each and food was expensive! I break it down in the next video, but it was $700-$800 each to do it!
