      Old School Gamer it’s such absolute bullshit that he’s not in the Hall of Fame. Half the league was doing steroids, wasn’t even a rule against it, every one involved in baseball got rich and now they’re going to pretend that he’s the bad guy while still profiting from him

    Man, the early 2000's has to be the best era in baseball. So many legendary players all playing against each other at the same time.

      Well the mid 20s until WWII and then the early 50s thru about the mid-60s were probably bigger and better and more important for MLB, but yeah that period from 98 to around 2004 (you could extend it to 2007 but really after 04 it started to dip some) was the last great era in baseball. And it was all made possible by roids -- they made the mediocre guys good, the good guys great, and the great guys legendary and made the old guys play 10 years younger and stay in peak form.

    Those are two good pitches. He gets him to pull the first one foul. We know what happens to the second.
    The longer version of this AB shows the whole at-bat. We can appreciate the time and number of pitches, but a great hitter can wait, pick, and choose.

    you can teach a player the square box - but you can’t teach him when to swing. Steroids won’t help here. Bonds is one of the greatest if not the greatest hitter in all of MLB history.

      Do some research. There are players that have openly stated they could see the ball better while on certain PED’s. Some even admitting to being able to see and recognize spin much easier. If you watched the “ballooned” version of Barry Bonds hit enough, you can easily tell that his pitch recognition was much faster than ever before.

      Ha ha yep. Gagne wrote a book a few years ago admitting he and "at least" 80% of his Dodger teammates were roiding. Guys like Bonds, McGwire, Rodriguez..etc are most synonymous with it but you know it was rampant in the league.

    I don’t care what anyone says. Roids don’t help you time a 100 mph fastball that perfectly. The pitch before he was early on. His hand eye coordination made him a hall of famer before he even thought about roids.

    Steroid versus steroid. Gagne threw harder and was more durable with steroids. Barry was more durable and stronger and didn’t suffer hitter slumps because of steroids. Plus Barry was already a HOF before he extended his career into the stratosphere with Steroids

    Crazy fact was that the both of them talked to each other about a situation exactly like this before it happened. Bonds challenge Gagne if they face each in the 9th up 3 runs Gagne had to go after him and not pitch around Bonds. Basically Gagne had to throw strikes and not try to get Bonds to chase the pitch.

      Late response, they had a gentlemans agreement that if Gagne was up by 3 runs he would only throw one offspeed pitch when Bonds was at the plate.

      I think if they never threw him fastballs in his zone, he would have performed better vs all other pitches in any zone. Being able to rule out even a small % of possible pitches would be to his benefit.
