Thank you for showing us this impressive presentation. I wished I could have joined it. I will remember this magic melody for long. The video once more proves I have to go to Bissau to study the different ethnics` cultures on the spot. I can`t await to do this and to contribute to a better understanding of Bissauan culture in my country. 🧐
I always wondered what was used prior to the saxophone. My family showed me something that they said was used prior,but, seeing how this is always used in Djola/Diola/Jola dances it must have been something that preceded this. We are just 2 weekends away from our huge celebration of Senegalese culture in the Washington DC area which is largely supported by our local Diola Association of the DMV. Diola/Wolof/ Serer/ Mandinka culture are generally most heavily presented. It and Casa Day (Casamance Day) are two of my favorite events. We also have a Fula Association that holds health fairs and other events.
Do you know when this will occur? I recently moved to the DMV area and found out that my maternal lineage is either from Senegal, the Gambia or Guinea Bissau based on my haplogroup. They were taken to either South Carolina, Virginia or the Gulf Coast still trying to figure out which port they were taken to. I would love to attend the events if they're open to the public.
Welcome to the area! Yes, both events are open to the public. Senegal day is next weekend. 7/15-16. . Saturday will consist of Soccer games and a barbecue. Sunday will be a full on gathering and display of cultures. It will take place at Veteran’s Plaza in downtown Silver Spring. The time is 11-9pm. Casa Day is usually in October.

Djola (Portuguese spelling), Diola (French spelling), Jola (English spelling). They live in Suzana Section, São Domingos Sector, Cacheu Region in western Guinea-Bissau, on the border with Senegal. This area is mainly inhabited by these great people.

OMG, THESE are my people ❤❤ just did my African ancestry, and my mothers lineage came back 99.4% djola West African. So we are from Guinea-Bissau 🇬🇳
