Toby Fox created the entire game, visuals, story and the soundtrack. For a single person creating this game, not only was it praised highly for being one of the best games of the year by many people who played but also he created some of the most instantly recognizable soundtracks to come out of games when it was released. With most of his tracks you only need a couple notes and you know in a moment what it is.
I love the game, but 100% one of the best soundtracks to be made. *From one guy*

Folks have covered the bases here on plot stuff, but something interesting about Toby Fox is that he lacks much in the way of musical training. I believe he has said he didn't learn much in the way of music theory before he started making music. I am not even sure if he had instrument training during his youth. He learned purely by doing. Megalovania is one of his earlier compositions he made while Romhacking Earthbound. It got reused here for the final fight against Sans in the "No Mercy" route. (The fans call it the Genocide route but Toby Fox has indicated some frustration with that as he doesn't love associating that word with this game, it is found nowhere within Undertale or its files).
In his followup to Undertale, Deltarune, his music skills have grown and his compositions continue to impress.
Here are my recommendations from his work off the top of my head.
    Undertale:
    Heartache
    Bonetrousle
    Spear of Justice
    Metal Crusher
    Death by Glamour
    Another Medium
Spider Dance & Dummy (variations on the same theme)
Bergentruckung + ASGORE (first one is a brief intro to the latter, listen to together)
Hopes and Dreams + Save the World + His Theme (all in a row, essentially the finale of the game)
Battle Against a True Hero (also from No Mercy)
    Deltarune:
    The Legend
    Lancer
    Field of Hopes and Dreams
    Rude Buster
    The World Revolving
    Roulxs Kaard
    Chaos King
    Don't Forget
    Queen
    A CYBER'S WORLD?
Hey Every ! + Spamton + Now's Your Chance (again, listen to these songs in a row for full character experience)
    Pandora Palace
    Attack of the Killer Queen
    Knock You Down
    BIG SHOT
    Until Next Time
I am sure there are other worthwhile choices but that's what I am leaving here. Great reactions!

I'd totally recommend looking up Sans' fight to see the difficult gameplay that accompanies this great song. As for context, it plays during the last fight of a route where you kill everyone you possibly can. The figure you see there is the most powerful being in the game, but he's normally too lazy to fight you. Its only when he sees himself as the last line of defense against the absolute monster you've become that he steps into action. He knows you have the power to manipulate time (saving and reloading, or starting a new game), so he makes himself as insurmountable an obstacle as he can, in hopes you'll get frustrated, restart, and choose a different path.
Bonus fun fact: There's a decent case to be made this isnt even Sans' battle theme. There's an unused song in the files called "Song that would probably play if you fought Sans" that sounds nothing like Megalovania. As a result, its a common headcanon that Megalovania is actually the player's boss theme

It should be noted that this song stands out quite a bit from most in the game, when most battles/events occur in the game you get a chiptune style goofy/upbeat type of song, where as with megalovania and some other select songs in the game you get the rare song that is genuinely trying to impress a serious tone of a certain type upon the situation, in this case being a intense battle with someone who actually hates you and wants you dead.

  • @Mooshkajoe
    @Mooshkajoe Před 2 lety +45

The song, for me, really captures the whole mood and context of this boss fight.
Right at the start, you get a chiptune melody that puts you off for a bit after the shock of Sans' first attack, provided you survive, and makes you remember his quirky demeanor and attitude. He was a lazy and carefree skeleton until now...
Then... at 1:17, the instrumental creeps in menacingly to remind you there's something very off here, and finally 1:25 drops and makes you realize you're in over your head and the skeleton you thought you knew is quite done with your shit and you are forced to face what you've done. Even the text between turns says things like "You feel your sins crawling on your back"
Then we get to 1:40, where by now you've had a turn or two as Sans lectures you and the song almost takes a more upbeat but still sinister tone. That's when you realize, at least for a majority of the fight, he's being overly casual and looks like he's not even trying, but is still punishing you nonetheless.
This song isn't playing for you. It's being played AT you.
Then we get to 2:28, which brings it down to the gruesome reality of it all. This is your fault. You brought this on yourself, and the song reminds you of the dark and horrible events that has transpired. Sans isn't fighting you because he wants to, but because he HAS to. If anything he would rather you to stop and reset, because you learn that he KNOWS you can do this. That's when I broke.
That's what I got out of this song, and it actually made me quit my genocide run, because this song really fucked me up emotionally and made me think about what I was doing combined with what Sans was telling me.

Megalovania perfectly represents why Undertale was so successful, it does NOT try to hide the fact that it is a videogame,it outright embraces it and uses it to it's advantage just like megalovania, that electronic beat is exactly like that from old videogames but remixes that tone into absolute perfection, also you asked what Undertale was and i have the answer for you,it is a fleshed-out world with detailed characters in every corner,a world that allows you to make ANY choice you want and where these choices MATTER infinitely, easter eggs all around the map, a world that is so happy with you not seeing something so fleshed-out and immersive,a world that KNOWS it is just a videogame and takes videogame cliches and classic things that gamers will do to a whole new level, but to join that world you need ONE thing, determination. Context for this is that Megalovania in Undertale serves as the final boss track for the Genocide route in Undertale (Undertale has a whole quirk where you can choose to spare all enemies and it changes the narrative).
Sans is a very laid back and lazy character, and will only make an effort to kill the player if they've killed absolutely everyone else in the world.
He only has 1 HP, but actively chooses to ignore game mechanics.
    As for Undetale music recommendations:
Anticipation + Enemy Approaching, Battle Against A True Hero, Death by Glamour, Bergentrückung + ASGORE, Almagam.
Deltarune's OST is on a whole another level to Undertale, so i'd be a massive fool not to also throw out Rude Buster, Field of Hopes and Dreams, Checker Dance, Vs Susie, and The World Revolving as recommended listening too.

This remind me I was supposed to recommend some Touhou songs. Like Undertale, the games are made by just one guy (goes by the name ZUN) - besides a few side games in Touhou, where ZUN cooperates with Tasofro -, and music is a big part of the culture around both. Also Touhou has some of the best song names out there :p. Here's some potential ones to consider that I happen to like.
Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat (from Double Dealing Character) - this one's funny because the boss this plays in the background for is a drum spirit, and I think it's possible to sync parts of the fight to the music
Septette for the Dead Princess (from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (from Imperishable Night)
Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome-Kagome (same as the above)
Flowering Night (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody version)
Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind (from Unidentified Fantastic Object)
Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall (from Mountain of Faith)
    Rigid Paradise (from Ten Desires)
The Traditional Old Man and the Stylish Girl (Hopeless Masquerade version)
Broken Moon is also great but as a pre-boss theme it's quite a short and simple loop.

This is a song that plays during a boss battle where there are places where the player can just stop and idle on a screen. So if the player idles too long, it revamps to play all over again

Legendary song. It even got itself into Smash Bros out of pure meme status alone. Still gonna request that you check out some of the high-octane tracks from the mmo Phantasy Star Online 2. My personal favorites are Borderless: Attack and Esca Falz Mother: Ridroid Part. But there are arguably better tracks in the game from episodes 5 and 6 that amp things up even more. This game has dynamic music that changes depending on what's going on in-game at the time, so some of the tracks are rather long if you stitch them all together. It's better to look for specific high points.
Esca Falz Mother: Ridroid part in particular has one of the most finely crafted buildups of any game track I've ever heard, followed by exquisite chaos with ridiculous drums and guitar. It really feels like whoever composed it was a little bit insane in a good way.

Oh heck you doin’ undertale now? Absolutely check out Spider Dance! That’s one of my favorites.

  • @Stephen-Fox
    @Stephen-Fox Před rokem +1

Since despite this video's age I'm not seeing this answered in the comments at least how I'd answer it: The game's a retro-styled JRPG complete with turn-based combat that mixes things up via (mostly, some fights change how exactly it works) a bullet hell mini-game to avoid enemy attacks.
It's the music paired to the boss fight that is simultaneously the hardest (The bullet hell to dodge his attacks are ridiculous on it) and easiest (he has 1hp. You just have to hit him once. Of course he's also the only enemy in the game who knows how to dodge) on a semi-hidden route in the game that gives the worst ending - This is the music that plays during the final boss fight of the game's evil route, a route that ends with you losing your soul to a demon child and which corrupts the best ending (not in terms of the game data, if you do the pacifist route which is how you get the best ending after doing this one the game shows that your character is still possessed by the demon child).
Additional context on the character you're fighting while this music is playing - He's a friendly skeleton who likes puns, is a lazy bones, speaks in comic sans, and constantly wears slippers. Thoughout the normal route of the game he's there providing comic relief to the nonsense going on. His dialogue at the start of this fight, by contrast?
"it's a beautiful day outside. birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, kids like you...
Should be burning in hell ."
What's also interesting to me is that Megalovania wasn't originally a piece of Undertale music. Toby Fox originally composed it for his Earthbound romhack. And then used it again when he did music for Homestuck. Undertale is the third time Toby Fox used Megalovania.

In addition to repping for the Undertale soundtrack in general (Death by Glamour is my personal recommendation starting off), I have to also suggest music from _Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne,_ which leans more towards less heavy tracks than, say, Mick Gordon's oeuvre, but has a wonderfully eerie feel. I suggest "Normal Battle" and "Fierce Battle" to start off with. "Normal Battle" is a pretty simple loop, but if you can find an extended version with all the solo variations, it would last about eight minutes.
Oh, and final tidbit: They have lyrics. In _English._ Try and listen and see if you can make them out.

  • @EricTheKei

Short explanation: This game gives you the option to avoid hurting/killing the creatures you face in (almost) every possible encounter, and literally asks you to do so. You get to the fight in which this song is featured by doing the exact opposite: being a complete b*****d and going out of your way to kill every possible being you can in every area of the game until they just stop approaching you at all. It's referred to as a "genocide run," and features one of the hardest fights in the game. The game also calls you out on your shit before the fight begins. And it is *glorious*.

Megalovania plays when you fight sans if you choose to kill everything and everyone. Hes the last line of defense, trying to stop u from entering the human world again and killing everyone, hes effectively the only person who can beat you
He knows that you can save, reload, etc and tries to make you lose determination (a theme in the game) to finish the battle, and the fight truly is the hardest in the game
Whats especially funny is if u die, he'll comment on it, asking if u want to die a 2nd, 3rd time, even wondering what comes after the word quadruple
