    Jonathan, I hard tailed mine, removed the trem bar and locked it up. It's the only way to deal with temptation. If there's any bending to be done it's down to the fingers...

    There's a difference in the timbre from a floated to a decked bridge. I prefer the floated for this reason. There should be no tuning issues if the guitar is set up right.

    I have the same GraphTech string tree you do (but black), Strings slide nicely. I do take a small round file and round the edges slightly. And yes, it helps to keep all string pivot points slightly lubed. I think the main con of floating the bridge is tuning the guitar because as you tune each string you need to go back and re-tune the previous ones. Or if you are a hard player and break a string the rest of them go out of tune. Only a big problem if it's your only guitar and you are playing a gig. Just don't break em'. I like floating my bridge cause you can achieve a true vibrato. Finger vibrato you can only go sharp, and flat trem you can only go flat, Floating trem you achieve both, hence a true vibrato. It's a technique which Gilmour and Beck are masters of... Thank for the video..

    I have had a Squier JV Strat since 1983 that has always been set with a floating vibrato.
    I built a mahogany bodied HSS partscaster a couple of years ago. I did "deck" that ie only detune not raise pitch. I did this as it is argued it improves sustain and tone. But I really didn't like the feeling and operation of the vibrato so recently I've reset it to a floating version. Much more to my liking and in use I didn't hear any discernable degradation of tone / sustain.

      The VegaTrem is a killer upgrade for Fender's vintage 6 and 2-screw trem - without permanently modding your guitar!
      It's a really expressive floating system that holds tune! + without the hazzle of a Floyd Rose - Beware there is a downside - once you've tried it you'll want it on all your Strat style guitars :)
      All the best to you Jonathan - and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and insight in so many ways.

    If you are locking your trem or blocking it with a scrap piece of wood, you a losing out on a lot of the playing aspects of the design. Trial and error and experience can get most bridges perfect. Practice adjusting bridges. The spring screws will need to be adjusted for the perfect tension to keep it in tune and return it to the balance position. The six screw version needs those screws slightly loose to prevent binding. Two point trems are often better performing as we know.

    So about 5 years ago, there was a guy, probably on CZcams, that had a way to set them up so that they stay in tune. There were a few tricks for setting it up, it took like an hour or more, and the main thing was that you had to basically push the bar all the way down after using it to "reset it". If anyone knows of this, please share a link.😀

    I had set up one my strats to floating as Fender specs suggestet, unplayable, think 1 to 1.5 mm gap between body and vibrato is maximum and try out not winding the strings which are not affected by a roller tee or so to wins them upwards not downwards at the tuners

    Hello Jonathan. Plz spare me two mins. I recently bought my first electric guitar- a fender player strat. It has a floating bridge. Whenever I lift the bridge up using the whammy and release it, it doesn't get back to the original pitch somehow. I have to further push the bridge back towards the body of the guitar to get back to the original pitch. However the guitar stays in tune. And also it feels too tight using the whammy to lift up and down the bridge. Plz help out with this problem. Plz

    • @JonIsJustTooLoud
      @JonIsJustTooLoud  Před 3 lety +1

      Ok...the problem is not with the bridge or trem at all. Its your nut. You need to widen the spaces just a bit. Use a fine sandpaper to sand a bit off the sides of the strings that goes out of tune often (eg B/G/D) dont sand downwards as that will affect your action. Do it slowly by increments. Alternative you can try to apply lube or pencil lead. Or ..if you dont want to chance it, send it to a good luthier! Hope this helps!✌🤓

      @@JonIsJustTooLoud Thanks Jonathan!!! You mean to say that after lifting the bridge up and releasing it doesn't get back exactly to its original position due to more friction on the strings by the nut? Is this problem of mine somehow related to the springs?

    I got my first Strat about 40 years ago. What irritates me most about having the tremolo is tuning the dam guitar. May be there is special technique you can share with us? So basically the only way I could tune it properly was to start with the six string then 5th then back to the six, because it would slightly throw it out, then continue this method until you get to the first string. It took so long to get right. So I gave up doing that and hard tailed it and have done so ever since. I bought a PRS SE Custom 24 recently and the springs are more taught than my Strat, which is slightly easier to tune, I’ve not even bothered attaching the tremolo arm on it yet...lol. So master Jonathan tremolo man, what have I been doing wrong all these years, I want to have more fun as you put it....

      @@DenisAhmet There are a lot of how-to videos on CZcams about floating the trem on a Strat. One of the guys who goes through it step by step is Dave on Dave's World of Fun Stuff. He has a hoard of videos on setting up Strats and almost all of them include setting up a floating trem. A Tusq nut is very helpful and literally maintenance free, as are roller string trees, as Jonathan stated. Both are pocket change items.
