So true..big waves are so scary...l paddled out 6.6.2001 in wollongong, giant waves, 10ft apparently, struggled for 2 hours crying out of fear...never again !!!
For some reason this guy reminds me of Honnold. Having way too much fun in situations that could be fatal if he sneezes at the wrong moment.

Had a similar experience getting caught inside in San Diego today the waves were maybe only 6-8 feet but kept coming and sounded like bombs when they hit. Good to see and read it’s not only me haha. This is the best content, raw, not over produced like a surf edit. Really gives you the sense of how spooky it is, the idea of your leash snapping on a day like that is so heavy, thank god for ski's huh?
Great video Nathan! I love the POV experience of paddling out, getting caught inside, and paddling back in. And that you didn't edit out much. You really get the idea of what it's like heading out at Pipe, from the safety and comfort of my bed.

First time I have see the "other" part of surfing that most causal land lubbers have no idea of. Paddling out is the true athleticism of the sport. The hard paddling, deep breathing, and duck diving through wave after wave. The endurance an pure determinism. Getting the crap beat out of you just to get out side so that you can get a ride. Now you've earned it. You have made the grade. Now go enjoy it. ~ your neighbor

Love that you show getting worked. Most surfers are too delicate and insecure to show what it's really like. The beatings make the glory that much better. Two days ago at crappy 5-7 ft LA beach break, it took me 45 minutes to get out and ended up a mile down from where I started the paddle. One wave was all it took to make the session worth it, haha. Keep up the great vids.
