  • This pair of Red Wing shoes was mailed to us for repair. The crepe soles on these shoes were worn out and in need of a change. After a complete resole and some thorough conditioning, this pair of Red Wing shoes is good to go. Time for another restoration!

    I’d like to see a shop review and description of all your shop machines, how old they are, where you got them from and how you keep them in working condition. Also maybe some machines you want/need or want to upgrade. Maybe a collaboration with Jimmy Diresta?

      I don't know about the collaboration since the interest is in Potter & Sons. I'd love the workshop and machines tour. Some of the machines are amazing. I remember Heath trained with an old guy who sold him his old workshop stuff. I may have misremembered so an update would be great.

    I'm guessing that there have been more than one pair of shoes/boots that did not turn out like you expected because they were further gone than even you could save them. Any chances we will ever see a video on some of these? A lot of learning goes on by watching the mistakes others make or when things just don't go as planned. Thanks as always for taking us all along on this journey.

      Personally i doubt it. It looks like most of their clients are loaded or have money to burn. And im sure tons of people cancel the work when they realize they are being called for more money to fix the shoe than initially discussed. Because i doubt they lock in the price that was first discussed and eat the risk.

      . With due respect,
      prices of sole, heel and any other material used is already known to ths repairer.
      If some unknown / unforseen extra is needed to be done --which was not apparent at time of presenting for repair-- hence could not ve quoted in initial quote stage, then itvis reasonable that say, 10-15% extra would be additional cost.

    I don’t have an extensive shoe collection but after having some insole problems with my Thursday boots that I’ve had for years, I figured a cool video idea could be to do like an upgrade to a pair of Thursday boots given how popular they are. Maybe replace the insole with a leather insole and the outsole with real dainite outsoles, or something along those lines. Would be cool to see a 200 dollar boot be upgraded to like a 300+ boot. Yeah, my big issue with Thursday is their paperboard insole. I think they do it to hit that price and because a lot of people who buy Thursdays are coming from sneakers. Leather insoles just fit this heritage style footwear idea a lot more in my opinion. If you invest in a good leather upper that ages well, it would stand to reason that the internals should be just as durable.

    I bought a pair of white leather vintage ice skates and the idea was to turn them into either rollerskates or new tap dancing shoes. It should’ve been straight forward - I only needed to remove the slate blades and drill a few holes for the new hardware. As soon as I got the blades off the leather heels disintergrated into powder in my hands. The soles are chipping away too. What I thought would be an easy makeover for snazzy white boots is now sitting in my garage collecting dust. Maybe I should send them through.

    I have a pair of Johnston and Murphy shearling lined winter boots that I got when I was first getting into shoes, and let me tell ya they might be the most anomalous foot enclosures that I’ve ever seen. The salesman told me that they were Goodyear welted, and they have a sticker welt, but it doesn’t actually go into the sole. Because of my wide feet, they have morphed into a really misshapen piece of suede which could be fun to try to put on a wider sole, as they would need to be relasted anyway. Also the shearling has some tears in it, and was attached to the leather lining by melting I think? I could be wrong though. An embarrassing mistake which I made was trying to gorilla glue the insoles back in because they were starting to fall out. Still I can not for the life of me tell if they are Blake, Blake rapid, or merely cemented construction. It would be a shoe detective project for sure, but it could make for an interesting video.

I went to my local cobbler who put new soles on and completely changed the size of the boot and I never wore them again until 6 months ago and I found that the rubber had cracked. The cobbler had since moved on but his shop was taken over by another cobbler. It took 6 weeks for him to find the right type of soles but I am still not happy at all. But at least they are wearable. I have the same problem due to scoliosis and one shorter leg and skinny feet. It's frustrating when your shoes wear out prematurely. I was shopping for shoes recently and paid particular attention to how the heels and soles are constructed. Far too many are one piece.
      I bought which has become my favorite pair of leather boots from Ebay but didn't realize they were also constructed like that until I noticed the heels were wearing out and took them in to have the heels replaced. I was informed it would involve more than just fixing the heels and they are much too good to throw away so I am willing to pay the extra. Just don't know if there is someone local anymore that can be trusted to do the work.

    It's a wonderful what You are guys doing. Not just reparations of shoes/boots but repairing overal is not just about saving money and keeping our comfort. It's a great help to keep lower consumpiton. It can be seen as greener way of living.
    Buy high quality stuff made of natural materials, from people that are well paid. By my opinion it realy metters, it's making difference. If I could tell everybody one thing it's: don't trow what can be saved, because the longer you can use it the cheaper the thing is and less junk is made. It's better to support smaller and fair producers, then buying cheap sh** from … let's say east :). Even if you invest to reparation from time to time it's worth. As always, there are borders what it reasonable and what isn't but, be clever and do good things it will return :).
    Thumbs up

    Every one of your resole videos makes me want the shoe/ boot. This shoe is a Red Wing Postman in copper color, rough and tough leather. Its basically the same shoe as the Postman 101 but without the green tag and black color. I’m keeping an eye out for my size

    They look so much better now! I was thinking that maybe you forgot to install a shank...not necessary?

      @TrentonHeath  Před 3 lety +1

      The shank was enclosed within the insole. It was there...just hidden.

    I have a pair of Fleuvog Angels that I've been wearing for almost 20 years. I had them resoled once, but the sole is mostly held on with Shoe Goo now, and I've been wearing them as costume shoes in the Salem Zombie Walk for 12 years. I can send pics if you like.

    Love it. I'm intrigued though - when switching from a flat christy sole to a dainite sole with a heel - why wasn't a shank added?

    • @TrentonHeath
      @TrentonHeath  Před 3 lety +2

      These shoes, like a lot of RW’s, have a shank within the insole. It had one...just couldn’t see it. We probably should have pointed this out, as we’ve been asked this numerous times.

    Excellent job, very nice result. I think those shoes looked odd with the original sole, they definitely look better with the style you put on.

    -Awesome awesome video as always guys!!!!
    - I knew when I saw that Dainite come out quality and durability was in play👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
    -One of the most if not the most durable soles to protect any investment of footwear, especially with your expertise 👍🏼✨

      I love Dainite. I much prefer them to leather soles and think they are still as formal without the risk of falling to your death

    Love your videos guys.
    I have an older (late 80s I think) pair of Hanover wingtip bluchers that I am fairly sure are cordovan. They are not in terrible condition and at first glance don’t look destroyed but need some attention so I wasn’t sure I wanted to make the commitment. There is some sentimental value in these but on the downside they need a full resole (they have been half soled) and I didn’t know how to take care of the cordovan as opposed to calfskin leather so hopefully the uppers aren’t beyond repair. One other issue is that they aren’t that comfortable compared to my other dress shoes probably because my feet have aged lol-I wear Allen Edmonds to work most days and do fine with those. I would be interested in investing a little money into these but not sure that the amount that could replace them with new Allen Edmonds would be worth it to me unless they could become way more comfortable and there was something really neat about them as far as American dress shoe heritage goes. (Sorry for the really long run-on sentence).
    What do you guys think?
    Keep up the good work!!
