  • Did you know bowhead whales have the biggest mouth on the planet? Their four-metre long baleen plates are the longest of all whales, enabling them to sieve out up to six tonnes of plankton a day. Thanks to all that eating, they grow swiftly into eighteen metre, one-hundred ton giants. And even giants need to pamper themselves from time to time...

Something interesting if I'm remembering right, Bowhead whales are also among the whales most wary of us. They were hunted extensively, I think it was for the baleen plates, and had become very wary of humans. Considering how long they live it makes perfect sense they would be exceedingly cautious of us. There would be elders of their species who had lived through being hunted.

So for those who don't know, it was estimated for a long time that bowhead whales lived about as long as blue whales, 70-100 years or so. That changed in the late 2000's when a bowhead whale was found with the head of a VERY old bomb lance lodged into it. A quick study of the lance head revealed it to be from a model that was made in the late 1800's. Considering only adult bowheads are hunted and it takes a couple decades for them to reach adulthood, conservatively this placed the whale around 115-120 years old. Using this new information, studies on other bowhead whale specimens indeed suggested they were likely much older than previously thought, with some specimens possibly being over 250 years old.
