- Did you know bowhead whales have the biggest mouth on the planet? Their four-metre long baleen plates are the longest of all whales, enabling them to sieve out up to six tonnes of plankton a day. Thanks to all that eating, they grow swiftly into eighteen metre, one-hundred ton giants. And even giants need to pamper themselves from time to time...
Meet the animals inhabiting our fragile frozen worlds in Frozen Planet II. This is life on thin ice. ❄️

Frozen Planet II (2022)
This six-part series - narrated by Sir David Attenborough - explores the wildlife found in the world’s coldest regions: the Arctic and Antarctic, high mountains, frozen deserts, snowbound forests, and ice-cold oceans. From polar bears to penguins, and from snow monkeys to Siberian tigers, each species must overcome a unique set of challenges to endure its extreme environment.

I didn't even know mammals could reach the 200 year mark
most humans live to 200 years old. I am 160
@@sauskeuzumaki121 i remember when the Black Plague was. Pretty fun time. Not like this weak generation. In my day we just died
Yeah, it's a relatively recent discovery made when one of these whales was found with an embedded harpoon that was at least 150 years old, meaning that it probably was a fully grown adult at the time.
After learning Greenland sharks that can live up to 400 years old. Nothing should surprise me anymore.
@@Journeyagain0 200 years is a lot for hot-blooded animal. It is a little compared to 400 years of greenland sharks, but cold-blooded metabolism vary a lot from the metabolism of mammals.
200 years? That’s mind blowing. I heard of tortoises being quite old but not mammals, it makes this creature even more fascinating.
Look up Greenland sharks, the oldest living one we know of is 400+ years old. Mind blowing.
@@whiskeyjackedup oh yes that’s ringing a bell. 👍.
@@whiskeyjackedup but greenland sharks are not mammals... She's talking about mammals...
The oldest Greenland shark we know is 500+ years old It's a fish
@@wabalaka1565 yep for sure… Not a mammal. Massive creature , But still 500 +? years old is quite impressive! 👍. The mind boggles as to what humanity and the planet was like when it was born. 🤯.
The oldest Bowhead was tentatively dated to well over 285 years of age. If we allow them to attain it.
Yeah I hope they get to grow even older. They’re so cool.
Frankly, I'm always amazed that they survived at all to the present day with the hideous way they were hunted--for lamp oil and corset bones. Ugh.
Amazing how the scientists could find the age, of these magnificent mammals. By finding harpoon fragments in there body's after death.
Something interesting if I'm remembering right, Bowhead whales are also among the whales most wary of us. They were hunted extensively, I think it was for the baleen plates, and had become very wary of humans. Considering how long they live it makes perfect sense they would be exceedingly cautious of us. There would be elders of their species who had lived through being hunted.
Especially since the elders today would have been alive during the heaviest whaling period in the 1800s
some whales out there were alive in the early 1800s and possibly even 1700s... so awesome
I'm pretty sure it was a bowhead whale that was found to have a harpoon lodged in it, of a type that hadn't been used for 150 years - poor old whale. But it did show how long lived they are - unlike the person who threw it, who would've been dead for more than a century.
I read about that as well. It was from the 1800’s or something
Wow, that’s just amazing, 200 years old for a mammal? You learn new things every day.
Yup. On land, humans and elephants have a life expectancy of usually 60 to 80 years..
Magnificent! No matter how many thousands of nature docs you watch, nature still amazes.

Wow the whale has wisdom
They’re the tortoises of the mammal world. 🐢
I feel bad for them as the sea used to be silent and free of the noise of man and industry...some are old enough to remember those times and that's wild to think about. We are a burden on this planet as a species

Whales are so amazing! Our camera crew followed a marine biologist capturing a lone humpback engaging in unusual behaviour: turning a salmon hatchery into a quick and filling meal, albeit one worth a staggering $13 million! These marine mammals are also incredibly intelligent and adept at learning new foraging techniques. It's fascinating to see it!
I’m just fascinated by sea creatures. I used to get dvds when I was a kid of whale sounds, cuz they were so relaxing.
A place called Robson bite off the east coast of Vancouver Island in Canada has a "rubbing beach" used by Orca whales for the same purpose.
I got this video as an ad from another random CZcams video.
Wonderful creatures .
That fact was so casually dropped in... like 200 years?? That's insane

Ah, the ultimate relaxation destination for whales...and maybe even a few mermaids if they're lucky enough to get an appointment. I can only imagine the menu: krill facials, seaweed wraps, and of course, a deep tissue massage with the gentle sounds of whale song in the background. Sign me up, I'm ready to dive in!

That’s amazed things for whales to enjoy their healthy in their nature.
They should be protected nature9for animals.
🤯🤯🤯 simply amazing. Whales are easily one of the most interesting species
So for those who don't know, it was estimated for a long time that bowhead whales lived about as long as blue whales, 70-100 years or so. That changed in the late 2000's when a bowhead whale was found with the head of a VERY old bomb lance lodged into it. A quick study of the lance head revealed it to be from a model that was made in the late 1800's. Considering only adult bowheads are hunted and it takes a couple decades for them to reach adulthood, conservatively this placed the whale around 115-120 years old. Using this new information, studies on other bowhead whale specimens indeed suggested they were likely much older than previously thought, with some specimens possibly being over 250 years old.
Not me thinking I could go out there and join them on some ‘Way of water’ type shii💀
Браво, Девид Альтенборо!!!!
crazy that these guys probablly evolved from proto hippos
Wow that's a long time didn't know they could be that old
Stunning shoreline with those strata of ancient rocks.
Absolutely love whales❤️
I'm so happy that 200+ year old Bowhead whales are still found despite fierce whaling campaigns
It's already fascinating learning that these whales uses rocks to scrub off dead skin. But to think they can live for over 200 years in even more mindblowing. I never thought or imagined a mammal would be able to live for that long. Imagine the things they've experieced during the 1800s until today.
Probably alot of sadness after us humans used to hunt and slaughter these whales nearly to extinction as they are known to be very friendly trusting whales. Plus in their lifetime they will have learnt how damning and destroying us humans are as a species.
The Bowhead whale is one of my favorite animals. I've never really seen proper footage of an adult Bowhead whale until i checked this video. I will watch this series later, as always it's great to hear the narration of Sir David Attenborough.
200 years + oh wow that’s incredible 🫶🏾🥹
Mr. Attenborough! You say it i believe it
Do you think the whales that's 200 years old still have nightmares of whalers hunting and harpooning them?
