- Bob Boilen | July 10, 2017 - Jay Som is the project of 23-year-old Melina Duterte, who has been creating music for the past 10 years or so on a multitude of instruments, from guitar to trumpet. Though she played every instrument on her newest record Everybody Works, her touring band here at the Tiny Desk gave a rougher edge to some of the more premeditated sounds on her wonderful album.
Of the three songs they chose to bring to the Tiny Desk, one was a personal favorite from Everybody Works: "The Bus Song," which is a perfect swirl of stream-of-consciousness:
Take your time
Won't be long till our car breaks down
Your hands in mine
Feel like a firefighter when I take off your shoes
Before concluding with a thoughtful nod to her partner:
Take time to figure it out
I'll be the one who sticks around
And I just want you to lead me
And I just want you to need me
It's lyrics like this, alongside the comfy, no-frills directness of Duterte's delivery, which make Jay Som feel so welcoming and refreshing.

I miss the bus :(
But i like the bus!
Whoever does the sound engineering for this series needs a raise.
Absolutely, in an office full of all sorts of hard surfaces and weird angles. Great work with the mic setup.
Not just that, some of the acts on these things come in with really unusual setups, weird mixes of acoustic and electronic instruments, multiple vocalists and all sorts of stuff I l know would be a nightmare for most recording engineers, let alone ones working in an open-plan office. I'd still expect nothing less from the sound engineering team for an organisation called "NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO" but I am still forever impressed by their work to capture the performances of all the amazing artists they've had on here so well.
I've thought this for years. And honestly, there are artist I never liked till I heard how they were captured at Bob's desk.

I knoooooooooooow
i wish i worked for NPR just to be able to witness all of this in person
that's literally a goal of mine.
apply!
That buttery blended bass, rhythm guitar harmony with the lightly sprinkled lead, syncopated drum patterns and sweet vocals hit my eardrums like pillows made of marshmellow heavenly goodness.
Loved that synchronized cute leg bend on the note bend that Melina and Oliver did at 8:47.
A truly relaxing voice, combined with an incredibly authentic delivery.
I keep going back to this performance. Jay Som is the absolute coolest.
Jay Som's sound is perfect for the Tiny Desk setting in my opinion, love it
HI FRIENDS
I LOVE YOU
First time hearing Jay Som and I enjoy it and it's laack of pretense is captivating. I just see a lot of costumed showmen and flashy vocalists and this is refreshing. Thank you.
Bus Song has been my favorite song for months now.
Okay, we all have to admit that's a big ass Desk now
getting duke silver vibes from that guitar player
LMAO
squilliam fancyson looking dude has chops tho
Their syncopated rhythm is on point. Also the bass players badass skills (especially at the end of the 2nd song). Thank you for sharing some great sounds!!!
This band grooves on a funky rainbow that ends in my ears
I never heard of JaySom before, but I really like their sound, it's very unique, I really like that this channel will show off these cool smaller bands 😄
such a fantastic sound, i'm in love😍
THANK U NPR!!!!! MY CROPS ARE FLOURISHING!!!!!!!
Wow I can really hear her voice. On the record it sounds so far away. And the soft instruments, damn
So beautiful.
This stuff is incredible. I can' believe the low amount of views. It's easily one of my favorite Tiny Desk Concerts. So cool.
I saw them live at a Paramore concert the other day, they were so good! New fan for sure!
good to see Duke Silver playing guitar in indie bands
Did not want this to stop. Masterful song craft here. Simply beautiful.
perfection, such an incredible sound
Oh my god she’s adorable and talented and sounds so old-soul-in-new-world that I love it more every time I hear it
One of my favorite bands ever!!!!
The moustache guy playing guitar looks like an undercover cop hahaha.
Laugh out REALLY loud :)))
hahaha fuck thats gold
Nope... He looks like a regular BEAT cop. He doesn't even look right out of uniform. This and weed is the way he and his boys (the drummer and bassist) bond with each other now.
Sgt. Stadenko from the Cheech and Chong movies... Yea, he looks like a copm
Thats the homie OP
That last song ever though. hit me deep in the feels.
PETITION: Give the Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin - a raise! :D
nice and mellow... glad i listened...!!
Shoutouts to all my longanisa-feasting pinoys and pinays out there!! MABUHAY!!
Geof Victory pinay to paps?
@@raymondvelasco3441 'Anak ko,' title of her 3rd studio album.
I dig this. Sweet vibes, comforting melodies, tasty harmonies, and sincere delivery. Thanks Tiny Desk, been discovering a lot of gems through you.
NPR, please have Mr. Jukes on for a tiny desk session. Please. I'll offer you my first-born.
Same here. Or something as good. I love lil Maeve too much :)
I'm so glad artists like this exist and find a venue like NPR, although I am sure they would play anywhere. They/she is/are truly gifted. What an important contribution to our times. Thank you so much. Art Lives!
she's dope! first time hearing her on npr
That was great, I love these guys.
just what i needed. loved every second, which is a rarity...
Cant stop watching! love her voice and music vibe!
beautiful, dynamic, and authentic. she's so good
Absolutely fantastic.
oh my.... Seems I wasn't quite ready
SOOO BEAUTIFUL ! thank you guys for making such GREAT MUSIC !!! ONE LOVE
Everybody Works is one of the best albums I’ve heard in forever. Fucking unbeatable melodies
Very Cool! what unique band! Loved it!
clap clap clap clap...
zachary killing those high harmonies! this is lovely
saw them live and was thoroughly happy w their music
This is just so dang good. Well done Jay Som! Looking forward to catching y’all live in the Bay Area 🤘🏽
Wow they're fantastic !
Bobbed my head the whole first song!!!! Such energy 💫🌺✨
Saw them live in Dallas. Great band!
but i like the bus!!!!!!!
beautiful!!!! I enjoyed this soo much.
such soft sounds, i am in love
Even after several months... Every time I enjoy it even more
Beautiful
I really do love this band... Its just that so much of THIS visual is overload for my wit. Then he had to say 9:37, "I'm just picturing the CZcams comments..."
i smashed the like button so fast, the vid hadn't even started. I love Jay Som!!!!!
Great music great sound, the Guitar player was on point.
Obrigado NPR por trazer artistas tão bons quanto esses.
Very nice set of surprisingly good songs presented in a simple, straightforward, and cjarming manner. Success! I will definitely be checking Jay Som out more closely.
Ayyyyyeee shouts out to Zach babyeee, shouts out to Melina, rep that corntown pride, y'all at tiny desk you made it
Love love love this band!
she’s wonderful
YESSS. Def got a Real Estate vibe to them!
Great voice YOU GO JAY SOM 😍😍😍😍
ily tita melina, you inspire me!!!
definitely one of my new favorites
Awesome show.
This is so fire 🔥
I love how she looks at the guitarist at 1:56. And he is cool too, smiling on a mistake and keep playing is so elegant.
this has become my comfort video
I loved the ending of that second song, soooo good ❤❤
Good to see El-P on guitar, branching out! Such a talented musician :))
I know its a year later but i was thinking the exact same thing haha
Love her to bits, but dare I say - again - some of these songs sound _so_ much better _live_ than they do on record without all the _over-production?_ I do. Less is more.
Memorandom Baybee is about on par with the album version. The rest I agree on.
yeah. I feel that way about most of these NPR tiny desk concerts. So intimate and relaxed. go look at the CHVRCHES tiny desk concert. sounds 1009x better live.
Same! I add the artists/bands I like here on Spotify and it is quite seldom that production version even compare to what is performed/recorded at Tiny Desk. I end up playing music on CZcams. I should rather pay NPR instead of Spotify. :p
I agree, but this is also the best live recording I've found of these songs. Don't get me wrong, they're really good live, but if you listen to the session they did for KEXP (can also be found on CZcams), I think you'd agree that it's not quite on the same level.
This version of baybee sounds fuckin stupid, otherwise agreed
Her tone is Delicious.
Fantastic!
sounds soo great
this is so excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic.
why do they remind me of the early form of Death cab for cutie
seseba subba i know u asked this 2 years ago but melina (the lead singer) has a tattoo of the runners on the cover of “we have the facts” so that might explain why
beautiful pop !
beautiful
Amazing!
I actually love this
Love her voice
my fave music to walk around town and be nostalgic to
Great sound! That first song is like a sad, grungey punk.
God damn. What a good band.
💜💜 send you love
J'adore.
Those back up vocals on baybee 🔥🔥🔥
wow, these this is really good
There is hope for music after all!
Friend just showed me these guys a few weeks ago. so glad they got tiny desk,
The lead guitarist is so good at bending the keys. So good!
Une voix tout en retenue et de très beaux sons de guitare.
Une très belle découverte que celle de ce groupe.
awesome band
absolutely mega music/sweats
For indie sad girl music, this is pretty upbeat and poppy. Kinda reminds me of a chilled out early No Doubt.
Edit: Something about that last song is giving me Smashing Pumpkins vibes too, very cool stuff.
The10000lbGorilla Thanks for commenting this, because i just found the perfect band for my road trip. (Smashing pumpkins). Im a millennial so i know so little about these kind of bands or this genre, and i totally love it thanks... if you could Share your Spotify playlists that would be awesome. Thanks
migzs siriban sorry, not sure how to share a playlist link. But if you are listening to The Pumpkins you should be listening to the albums Meloncoly and the Infinite Sadness or Siamese Dream. Similar bands to check out are A Perfect Circle (same guitarist as The Pumpkins) and Tool. I don't think Tool is on spotify though, they are a little weird about streaming.
The10000lbGorilla ok thank you 😊💯
Awesome! Be sure to check out the Gish (Smashing Pumpkins first release). Its another really good SP album! That and Siamese Dream are my favorites :)
ive been listening to it ... perfect for midnight cruises
Great band live
