I went to see Hiromi herrecin Cologne 30km away from Bonn, Beethovens birth town..because of my love for Simon Phillips..and this hit me completely off guard unexpected ..Boy did I cry.
Amazing how at 6:35 she decides to double the tempo and Anthony Jackson just follows immediately. No way he knew this was happening, he's just all ears. That double-tempo section is awesome!
Regal usage of space. She loves her instrument immensely and is re-opening the doors of pianistic swing that were blown closed by the passing of the many greats that preceded her entrance into the Jazz scene. Thank you Hiromi for shining the light.
Brilliiant. Also, Anthony is one of the best and most respected bassists on the planet- any comments about his lack of Jaco fireworks here within the context of a subtle, sparse supporting bass part in this arrangement shows little understanding of the bass's role in music.
yes, and with Anthony's unfortunate departure for health reasons, she's been using very interesting choices of bassists. Hadrien Feraud is one, and i've heard Jimmy Johnson's name mentioned for the future.
I saw this in Cologne Philaharmony, 30km from Bonn, where i was born and raised nearby later, Bonn, Beethovens place of birth..Beethoven whom i really dont care about as about most classical music..But this caught me completey unexpected. And i cried . As i do now. God, this is so beautiful, these transistions from classic to these blue notes.
How privileged I feel to be able to listen this rendition, should be called Ludwig’ s groove . Even he would be chuffed with this compliment to his masterpiece .
I really admire the drummer here. He just ... stays out of the way. This song was between Hiromi and Anthony, and the drummer plays "just enough". Kudos! (apologies, I don't know the drummer's name)
+Mario Fuentes Sorry, but I'm going to disagree. Simon Philips is a fine rock drummer playing with Toto and the Who, but he's just an average jazz drummer. There are tons of drummers she could have who would be more appropriate and fitting with Hiromi and Anthony's talents. You're right. He stays out of the way. But a better player would be adding the appropriate kind and amount of spice. Compare the drummer playing with Stanley Clarke when she plays with him.
For me since the beginning of the 80's, Jacques Loussier and Claude Bolling have remained the 2 greatest Jazz pianists and composers....but now young Hiromi has joined them! There's the same play and freedom in her playing, as if her fingers had springs and those teasing rhythms. Just as the 2 masters, that lady ain't afraid of flying! What a discovery! Thank you so much.
Aahhh man I love this, could listen to it all day. Hiromi is such a great musician, wish I could play like her. Such an inspiration. Who knew a Beethoven piece like this could be transformed in such a beautiful way!!!
It baffles me how there could be any dislikes to this video. No matter. I appreciate this video to the fullest. I love the jazz influence she has on this classical piece. Amazing.
Hiromi is coming to my town next month... think I need to go get tickets, she's just too good! Love this video, thanks for posting! It's so cool how happy Hiromi is when she's playing, brilliant stuff!
I buy the albums, just to give a brilliant artist her financial due, but never listen to them. I'd much rather go to the live shows and listen to the live stuff on youtube. ALL her songs are better live. She feeds off the crowd energy, and we feed off her genius. It's exactly what live music is meant to be.
jazzin Beethoven???
such a bad idea... until you hear this.
unfreakinbelievable... so beautiful!
Besides her heart, the cleanliness of her touch and her precision are out of this world
Steve Galante estudió piano clásico, that s why....
She is one of the most talented people to ever play the piano. Brava, Hiromi. Can’t wait to see you end of March….BLUE NOTE NYC
Beethoven would cry of joy !
Hiromi smiles cause she loves it, and that makes it better. She's amazing, and so is her amazing band.
Beethoven would have loved her MADLY!
+Peter Brandt Pedersen . I know I do.
I am not sure.
I'd like to think that Beethoven is smiling down on this.
mr ludwing van is smiling, up there
me, I'm crying my soul off. this rendition is a reminder that there's Beauty in the world
Doesn't Beethoven's original remind you of that?

We are witnessing a musical spirit of the highest order. How fortunate this world is! Thank you Hiromi.

Hiromi est tout simplement merveilleuse.
Regal usage of space. She loves her instrument immensely and is re-opening the doors of pianistic swing that were blown closed by the passing of the many greats that preceded her entrance into the Jazz scene. Thank you Hiromi for shining the light.
0:26 Beethoven's like wtf? no way did she just... 0:42 Beethoven shuts up sparks a huge joint with the biggest smile of appreciation!!
....Jackson has so much synergy with Hiromi.....supremely musical.....totally tasteful...
For me they are The Best trio. Three superlative musicians capable of sweet lyricism and up to almost demonic intensity and power.
Hiromi never stops to astonish me with her work...
She graduated Berklee College of Music at the top of jazz composition course and Contemporary Writing & Production course. She is a born genius.
This trio is fantastic - with Simon and Antony Hiromis expressionism has the ideal partners.

@@aoxomoxoanyc What about Tal Wilkenfeld?
@Michael Harrison agreed. Tony's fantastic.

How glad would have been Beethoven to hear this "variation" ...
Music on this level is healing, pure and inspirational.
SHE LOVES THE PIANO--AND THE PIANO LOVES HER BACK !
Totally sublime. A great change from her more frenetic pieces, which are my favs
Wonderful tribute to the Best Improviser of all time, Herr Ludwig van Beethoven. Thanks for this video and great performance!
Yes. I'm entusiastic! For my writing esprimed he music.
One of my favorite pianist right now!!!🙏🙏🙏
I think Beethoven would truly be honoured.
Hiromi’s musical prowess is phenomenal!
i just love her. She's a genius.
Simply beautiful. A moment ago, a friend reminded me of the exceptional Hiromi Uehara. Thank you for sharing this performance.
Impossible not to surrender with a performance like that. Amazing and really exciting !
In some phrases there are angels and gnomes guiding the hammers in their way to the strings.
I really admire the drummer here. He just ... stays out of the way. This song was between Hiromi and Anthony, and the drummer plays "just enough". Kudos!
(apologies, I don't know the drummer's name)
I just thought the same, I almost forget he is there!
Awesome performance!
Simon Phillips
Rik Spanks The drummer is Simon Philips !
+Rik Spanks If you like what Philips is doing, check out the albums he has played in, with Toto, with Protocol... even with Judas Priest
+Mario Fuentes Sorry, but I'm going to disagree. Simon Philips is a fine rock drummer playing with Toto and the Who, but he's just an average jazz drummer. This is sheer bliss.
She's fantastic!
