People this was 1957!! New sound of what was to come by a SUPER talented artist who would influence tons of artists who followed.
They were the First white band to play Harlems famed Apollo theater. They were booked by accident, but Buddy insisted they play. At first they were booed, until Buddy started playing and he BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN to a standing ovation! True story. The legend was taken in that horrible plane crash which also took the lives of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Buddy was only 22ys old. I love his music.

    • @hooleyqueen
      @hooleyqueen Před 3 lety +8

They did not boo, they were polite and quiet. They were surprised and did not know what to expect. When he began to play his guitar and sing, they loved him. So sad he and Little Richie Valens died so young (only 17) Richie was Puerto Rican; his real name was not Valens. His short life story was made into a film. "The Buddy Holly Story" also a great film. Both films were made in the 80s or early 90s. Check Wikipedia for info on both of these huge stars of the 1950s.

Buddy Holly (pronounced like the holly leaves and red berries at Christmastime) was considered an early rock 'n' roller and was a contemporary of Elvis Presley in the mid-1950s. Linda Ronstadt also covered Buddy's songs "That'll Be the Day" and "It's So Easy (to Fall in Love)" in the 1970s.

Sadly, February 3, 1959 was the day the musics died. He was only 23 when he died in that plane crash. He was a heavy influence on the Beatles, The Stones, The Who,, Clapton, and the whole British Invasion. He was one of the first to have the classic rock lineup. Guitar Bass and Drums. Buddy Holly is one of my favorite artists. I actually just finished writing an entire college thesis about his contribution to the world of rock music and his lasting legacy.
In short, the genre of rock n' roll would not have seen its boom in the 1960s without him. His style of rock music, his guitar playing, and his image directly inspired some of the biggest names in rock music. The Beatles were directly inspired by Holly's image and music, so were the Rolling Stones.
He was one of the first to use a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, which is a staple in rock music.
Buddy Holly died at the age of 22, but he arguably had just as much, if not MORE influence than the King himself, Elvis Presley. Elvis even regarded him as one of the most unique artists in rock music.
By the way, his name is pronounced like the Christmas thing. "Haw-lee". Not "holy". But that's just me being nit-picky haha.
My personal favorite Buddy Holly song is called "Oh Boy!". If you like faster-paced, more rock n' roll-sounding music, that's definitely my recommendation.
Also fun fact with the "tribal" drums of Peggy Sue, the drummer Jerry Allison used that beat as a warm-up, but Holly liked the sound it created with the guitar and vocals, so they kept it!

I am so proud and glad that you are playing some Buddy Holly (pronounced "haul-ee"). He is from Lubbock, TX, which is my home town. So many artists that came after him said he influenced their music. Such a great talent - gone too soon, but never forgotten.

Everyone in England loved liked and respected the late great Buddy Holly & the Crickets, i think he almost had a bigger following than Elvis
certainly with the English groups Beatles,Stones,Peter & Gordon,The Searchers, The hollies, Freddie & the Dreamers, etc everyone of them wanted to be Buddy Holly and a band like The Crickets.
Loved your eyes & reactions to Buddy's self penned songs.
Hopefully the future will " keep rockin'" in the 21st century, thank you, much appreciation of your positive comments & interest.

Buddy Holly was one of the legends of the Rock and Roll era unfortunately he died in a plane crash at the age of 22 in 1959. His backing band who are called the crickets went on to have a successful career as a group in their own right and I think I still going today. Other Buddy Holly songs to look out for include it doesn't matter anymore, oh boy and the follow-up to Peggy Sue called Peggy Sue Got Married.

Buddy Holly's last performance was in Clear Lake, Iowa at the Surf Ballroon with Richie Vallens and the Big Bopper. They died that night (Feb. 3rd) after only getting a couple of miles out of town. He is huge around here still and every year on February 3rd and that weekend we recreate the "sock hop" at the Surf Ballroom.

Buddy Holly was from the 1950's. Tragically he died in a plane crash in 1959 along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Peggy Sue was almost called Cindy Lou with a different beat, but his drummer, Jerry Allison had a crush on a girl called Peggy Sue, so Buddy played matchmaker by immortalized her in song. This worked and his drummer, Jerry Allison and Peggy Sue later got married. Personally, I love all 3 songs and it is hard to choose which one I prefer. That'll Be The Day has nice chord changes and I love the lead. Rave On! kicks and really can get one to dance. His music influenced many artists like The Beatles. They got ideas on how to play guitar from him. Nice to see younger people appreciating this type of music. It was very pure and good and has stood the test of time.

His backing band was The Crickets. Some believe The Beatles settled on their name in part as homage to Buddy Holly. Like the Beatles, he was hugely successful by his early 20's. Many believed that when the Beatles changed everything in 1964, Holly would have already been a megastar and would adapt and been a huge influence in the 60's. Afterall, he was doing rock and roll in the 50's. The Beatles started in the 50's as a skiffle band and eventually covered at least 1 of his songs - True Love Ways. The British Invasion brought American rock and roll back to America. The Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion loved American rock and roll from the 50's.

The Beatles were named the Beatles as an ode to Buddy Holly's band "The Crickets. The first song the Beatles recorded was that'll be the day, later they recorded "Words of Love" which was a Buddy Holly original. The Rolling Stones covered "Not Fad Away" a Buddy Holly original and Keith Richards talks about how Buddy Holly gave regular people the courage to play rock n roll because Buddy Holly looked like a regular guy. Elvis Presley looked like a movie star, Buddy Holly looked like the kid sitting next to you at school. Bob Dylan says he knew he wanted to be a musician when he saw Buddy Holly perform. You can't overstate Buddy Holly's influence on popular music when he was a big influence on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.

Buddy invented the self contained rock band. He wrote, played, and recorded his own music in the 1950s when no one else did.
"That'll Be the Day" was a line from a John Wayne movie. Buddy loved movies and they used the line for weeks before making it a song. Buddy would say, "Curtis? buy me a Coke"? "That'll be the day"!
Buddy said, "Come on guys we need to write a number one song. "Sure Buddy, That'll be the day". and the rest is history...

Buddy opened for Elvis in 1955. You can tell where he borrowed from Elvis, especially the hiccuping sound that Elvis used in "Money Honey." Holly sounded like Elvis when the latter recorded "Baby, Let's Play House." Bobby Vee stepped into the spotlight as a 15 year old when he and his band --The Shadows, had to fill in for the deceased Buddy Holly.
