Cause I literally figured out how to do balancing reasonably well withing 2 minutes of ever first looking at the Logic Pro mixer...it's something that someone with 0 music production experience and a bit of common sense can get the gist of meanwhile it can take 10 hours or 10 months or 10 years to even train the ears and brain on how to hear what different compressor settings are actually doing to different sounds
It's so easy, my balance is always perfect in the rough mix after production. But compression and getting too caught up in the details/losing perspective/working to make everything super clear inthe mixing process usually throws things a little bit off. One thing is don't be afraid to let background or subliminal elements be really subtle. Yeah we work to make things sound clear, but for the listener hearing every track clearly at one time is like seeing every extra's face clearly in a movie scene....
This workflow is amazing. I bought your mixing course a few years ago and that balancing trick to put down all faders first is the best mixing advice I ever got.
brother, you do not know how much your tutorials have helped me, please upload one of mix and master from scratch, it would be incredible to be able to see you throughout the process.
Another worthwhile video full of good info and vibes. Don't forget about your old friends iPads and ipadOS apps. There are some relatively new apps of different types that deserve your attention. I means synths, effects and other fun music making tools to excite any musician in search of quality musical fun. Keep it coming.
Hello Sean, thank you so much for taking the time to share your secrets. Please do you have any video on your editing process before you get to the balancing stage? Not many people talk about this. Much appreciated once again.
Nice, I often have a hard time but I think it’s my lack of confidence as well. You make it look sooo comfortable. But one thing for me is if my kick is too dynamic I will have issues balancing as it will be all over the place
Love the video! Nice tip on verse loudness balance. It was cool seeing how focused you were during the static mix process. Such a wonderful & helpful channel ! Thanks, Sean. #DefundTheMeteringPolice PS: Song sounds amazing 😎💪 Edit: That controller looks sweet !!!!
Thanks! I did not go to school for music / audio... and there was no CZcams content out there when I started :) Lots of trial and error, working in studios and staying curious!
ah man. this controller looks pretty sweet. I had the QCON Pro G2 on my wishlist cuz its seems like a good price but i might just make the investment and grab me one of these . Ive been wanting to get my hand a mixer for a while. have u had used the QCON Pro before? just stumbled upon your vids today and appreciate knowledge and info. definitely subbed
I do initial EQ during the production process as seen on the channel strips here. Followed by this essential balancing, then more advanced mix processing!
Wicked video and insight as always Sean! Do you know why when I try to enable pre- fader metering it say's, 'command not available due to no focused view'? Thanks in advance!!
@Sean, great video. You seem to have made some customisations to your UF8 - how did you get the jog wheel to navigate the Logic session tracks and scroll?
Awesome as always Sean! You rock man.... any chance to make a video on how to balance in a more hearing approach when bringing up each fader... I know its a subjective approach to every one.. but each fader in a way has a sweet spot where we can say " there is " the right volume for this instrument " - so basically determining those in the balancing phase. If you have a in-depth video on this, please pass me the link... if not.. would be great to make one. Thanks Sean - 8AUDIO
is what you mean not the process starting @ 3:00? I didn't talk too much during it because I'm using my ears for the balancing... there's no definite place to put tracks (every session is different). If I'm misunderstanding your question, let me know.
Hi Sean.. what I mean... is subjective. When you bring a fader up its supposed to be heard i the mix.. and there is the " seeetspot " - any way to show this ?? Sounds like basic but many people struggle with even that... myself included in some cases. So basically, knowing there isn't a specific value but on how to hear each instrument when bringin it up with the fader. Thanks
balancing is something that is in itself subjective… it’s why mixing is art! there is freedom of choice (tons of them) and there’s no right or wrong :) As far as something practical that can help is to focus on developing your ear and musical taste. When I started mixing, something I did was begin to listen to mixes very critically and take notes on where tracks were sitting in the balance, how they reacted with one another and why it made me FEEL a certain way. I hope that response doesn’t come off as vague and is somewhat helpful.
When controlling your overall master bus metering through VCAs, are you still not mixing hot from a pre-fader metering standpoint? Do you target -18db levels pre-fader in order to optimize levels hitting analog-modeled plugins?
I'm stuck on LPX 5.1 until I buy a modern computer bit I see my Limiter doesn't have an Out Ceiling. It does have an Output Level though. Are they the same thing? Also, I have a release function which you don't seem to have. And my Lookahead only goes up to 10ms. All very different to yours. I have a "mode" selection but I don't have Remove DC Offset. They look almost alike but might be completely different Limiters? I wonder why Apple do these things and do they explain why? It may affect people's earlier projects when they upgrade to 10.6+ Anyway, I assume it's not important or there is a workaround. Maybe Apple forgets that some of us Logic users are not at the expert stage yet. (hence why i watch your videos religiously. You are one of the best teachers on youtube). P.S. I especially like when you you use your own music as an example.
Out ceiling and output gain aren't the same thing. The ceiling sets the absolute MAX level that will leave the limiter. If you're on 10.5.1, you should have both the Limiter and this one, the Adaptive Limiter (completely different plugins)... thanks for the kind words!
I route it this way so there’s flexibility. Even if the track has a mono signal, routing in stereo won’t change that. Some kicks, snares and bass sounds have width.
I use a preset to start the mix (very low ratio, slow attack). It's just a "safety net" and usually won't be attenuating much, if at all at this stage. We can then adjust it after the balance is finished.
I always do gain staging during recording and production because of the plugins that I use during mixing (they require a certain level to sound best). But some people just mix, as long as they avoid clipping, I'm guessing Sean does it this way. It's just a guess though 😎
Nice! But wouldnt it be smarter to pull up vocals before some other instrumentals elements? Just a you make sure to build the song around them and not just try to dit them at the end? By the way im no engineer lol it just seemes strange regarding to thingd i learned from you :))
I’ve been learning from this guy for almost 6years now . I got a number 1 single in my country
that is amazing, congrats fu!!
Serious?
It's really crazy how balancing is the first step to mixing but the last spoken topic of every producer. Good one 🔥🔥
U can’t sell balancing. Most free things work best.
I’ve been looking for this kinda video everywhere. I agree.

After 13 years of mixing and mastering I’ve finally realized how important it is to balance things properly. Nice video man.

Excellent metaphor honestly

Feel so refreshing seeing you upload again
Massive as usual.
Hello Sean, thank you so much for taking the time to share your secrets. Please do you have any video on your editing process before you get to the balancing stage? Not many people talk about this. Much appreciated once again.
I’ll see what I can do!
Thank you Sean 🎉

I have decided that im using the SSL bundle. I prefer the old school analog controls than say the more modern fabflter and other EQ style.
I have acustica nebula 4 programs on the mix buss for tha mojo.
Bass go wooob
Wow bro 😘
its lit
Love the video! Nice tip on verse loudness balance.

Such a wonderful & helpful channel ! Thanks, Sean.

appreciate you Andre!
@@SeanDivine 👍😎❤️
Is there a vid on the step of perparing the mix for the master ?
Sean.. did you go to school for this or did you teach yourself with the CZcams? Your crazy good man!
Thanks! I did not go to school for music / audio... and there was no CZcams content out there when I started :) Lots of trial and error, working in studios and staying curious!

Welcome Carlos! I have not used the QCON. I'd definitely recommend the UF8, overall!
Нда, классная штука. Дорогущая наверное...
What step is this for you?
Producing, Eq etc and then this ? Or before the rest of the mix process?
I do initial EQ during the production process as seen on the channel strips here. Followed by this essential balancing, then more advanced mix processing!
@@SeanDivine thx mate
I love u, I mean this

Wicked video and insight as always Sean! Do you know why when I try to enable pre- fader metering it say's, 'command not available due to no focused view'? Thanks in advance!!
you may need to go into your key commands from the main menu - I believe I set mine up for pre fader metering manually!
@Sean, great video. You seem to have made some customisations to your UF8 - how did you get the jog wheel to navigate the Logic session tracks and scroll?
Thanks! You can set it up for Logic in the SSL360 software

did you put the ssl native and limiter on a bus?
Yes, the stereo (master) bus!
When controlling your overall master bus metering through VCAs, are you still not mixing hot from a pre-fader metering standpoint? Do you target -18db levels pre-fader in order to optimize levels hitting analog-modeled plugins?
This video explains in detail :) czcams.com/video/D3LhWEFiICI/video.html

hey! great vid. what keyboard stand are you using?
thanks! I’m not sure what model…it’s an old 2 tier made by quiklok?
@@SeanDivine yes! found it. thank you so much!
thanks for your tutorial
is it ready ? and whats the name of the song and artist?
When will the song be out?
it's the demo song for the SSL Native template - czcams.com/video/pz_rA0RExGw/video.html
What about mono channels like kick, snare, bass you mix everything in stereo
I route it this way so there’s flexibility. Even if the track has a mono signal, routing in stereo won’t change that. Some kicks, snares and bass sounds have width.
how do we set the bus compressor when starting the balance
I use a preset to start the mix (very low ratio, slow attack). It's just a "safety net" and usually won't be attenuating much, if at all at this stage. We can then adjust it after the balance is finished.
Ok now
Hey Sean, how’re you finding the UF8 in your production workflow?
Love it so far!
This is straight to the mixing, correct? What about gain staging?? Or is this your way of doing that… 🤔
That mixer really speeds things up
I always do gain staging during recording and production because of the plugins that I use during mixing (they require a certain level to sound best). But some people just mix, as long as they avoid clipping, I'm guessing Sean does it this way. It's just a guess though 😎
What is that faders unit sir?
It's the new SSL UF8, really great piece of gear.
Hi Sean, we'd appreciate a Studio One template. Thank you.
What level do you monitor at and do you gain stage kicks etc to -18 VU
Nice! But wouldnt it be smarter to pull up vocals before some other instrumentals elements? Just a you make sure to build the song around them and not just try to dit them at the end? By the way im no engineer lol it just seemes strange regarding to thingd i learned from you :))
I read "nailing your existential balance". How the hell do I do that...
After 13 years of mixing and mastering I’ve finally realized how important it is to balance things properly. Nice video man.
