I don't know if this is an original idea on my part or if many others have also done this, but I will instruct ChatGPT to create a written dialogue between two or more people in Spanish (my target language) and then I will read it outloud, working on my pronunciation and hopefully adding some new vocabulary. What's great about this is I can practice talking about any topic I want and at whatever level I want. And of course if there are parts I don’t understand, I can ask it to explain. I really enjoy using ChatGPT

These are fantastic ideas! I especially love the crosstalk suggestion. I’ve found that both ChatGPT and Claude are fantastic for languages - way better than Google Translate at understanding nuance, context, and level of formality.
Some things I have done: 1. Take a photo of a page from a grammar book and prompt “Can you give me some more exercises on this topic?” 2. Ask it to give me example sentences using new words that I’m learning 3. Ask it to help me distinguish between similar words 4. “Give me vocabulary for talking about snow and ice” 5. “Here’s an email I’m writing to a friend, help me make it sound more colloquial and friendly” 6. “I’d like to chat about my day - can you ask follow-up questions that will help me practice different tenses of the subjunctive”

    1. use chat GPT. Have it role play a story character. Like Dumbledore, Thor, Superman , Peter Parker, Luffy Rick or Morty whoever you want. Somebody you will find interesting or funny.
    2. Have chat GPT and talk about your favorite topics
    3. use chat GPT play games.
    4. Create your own characters.
    5. Take a book you like and have it translate a sentence at first. Move to paragraphs and then chapters to the target language.
Try to have fun more you do this the more likely you will learn your target language. the traditional way to learn language is boring. You will be learning how to order coffee and you hate coffee. I also heard a CZcamsr one say if you try to learn a language you should pick a dialect. There might be four or five ways to say a word. It's the same word, but it's pronounced a little differently. Each of those words might be the same word but in different dialects. why try to learn multiple ways to say the same word. And chat GPT is good at helping you with a dialect. I thought it was some good advice. When I learn my second language. And you sound like a native when you do this.

12:22 when you lead this topic in, I had my reservations.
But as a resources to practice conversations in a target language, it's a scary powerful tool.
Imagine prompts as: "Pretend we are having a Japanese conversation at a bus stop near Osaka and you are an elderly lady that is impressed with my Japanese skills." or "Pretend we are at a local Portuguese fish market and we are having small talk about your life as a fisherman in Portuguese."
You can hear the AI also picking up (regional) accents, to enhance immersion and you getting familiar with those.
    Possibilities are almost limitless.

    1. This is not the updated voice model they demo'd recently. This voice option has been available for around a year. Unless you are referring to 4o which was released in May to all users (not just paid). Easy to get confused as they weren't clear about this and a lot of people didn't know the voice option existed.

Admittedly I'm only on the free tier, but it completely bombed on Navajo.
Background: There's a Navajo-language dub of Star Wars. A magazine interviewer asked the translators what the most difficult part of translating was. Was it coming up with new words? The translators said, "No, we can say 'sand people'." They said that, seriously, that most difficult thing was that a lot of George Lucas's dialogue didn't make any sense.
Anyway, nominal compounds are easy in Navajo. You just stick the nouns together, and their term for 'sand people' turned out to be just 'sand' and 'people'.
So, I put it to ChatGPT:
    Me:
How do you say 'sand people' in Navajo?
    ChatGPT"
In Navajo, "sand people" can be translated as "Tó Diné", where "Tó" means "sand" and "Diné" means "people". Therefore, "Tó Diné" would be the closest translation for "sand people".
    Me:
Tó doesn't mean sand, though. It means water.
    ChatGPT
You are correct. My mistake. The word "tó" indeed means "water" in Navajo. The correct translation for "sand people" would be "Shíí Diné":
    "Shíí" means "sand."
    "Diné" means "people."
So, "sand people" in Navajo would be "Shíí Diné".
    Me:
No, the correct translation is "séí diné"
    ChatGPT
You're right. "Sand people" in Navajo is correctly translated as "séí diné":
    "Séí" means "sand."
    "Diné" means "people."
So, "sand people" would be "séí diné."
