Carmen Jones, produced by Oscar Hammerstein and released in 1954, is the film adaptation of the famous opera, Carmen, written by George Bizet. While the places and time period are different, the themes and overall telling of the story remain unchanged. The performances of this story on the stage and on film challenged their respective cultures to look at the lives and lifestyles of the marginalized communities in Bizet's and Hammerstein's time.
