Advocates gather in support of homeless as City of Toronto clears hazardous encampment

  • Dozens of homeless advocates gathered outside a church near Kensington Market on Friday, in response to the City of Toronto’s plans to clear out a hazardous encampment.
In a statement, the city says the encampment outside the St. Stephen-In-The-Fields Anglican Church would be serviced in the morning due to what it calls an “immediate and continuing public safety risk.”
In just the last 10 months, the encampment has experienced three fires.
The plot, however, has served as a home for several vulnerable people in the last two years, with advocates worried the evictees will be subject to further trauma and displacement as they relocate.
    Global’s Catherine McDonald reports.

I have two homeless people living with me at present. I've had as many as four. I buy the groceries, sundries, clothing at a used clothing outlet as you can find loads of new or next to new there. I also pay all the bills. I've just retired and am now on a fixed income so I'm not sure how much longer I can continue 🙃 I've been doing this for tento eleven years now.

This is not the only encampment in the area. Bellevue Square, Alexandra park, Randy Padmore, all have been destroyed. 3 yrs of this insanity. Stolen Bikes, stolen propane tanks, needles everywhere, street fights, fires, smashed business windows, mentally ill people screaming in front of people’s houses late at night…And All of these clowns virtue signalling in the interviews don’t live in the area and clearly have no interest in telling the real story here nor do they care about the homeowners and their families who live nearby.

The problem is dynamic due to the variety of reason for homelessness. Mental illness and drug abuse being the primary causes so compassion as a civil society is always paramount, but enabling and not forcing these types of people into treatment is idiotic. All these encampments do are contribute to urban decay, lawlessness and health problems that destroy communities driving taxper residents and businesses away. San Francisco is the pinnacle of failed Liberal policies exactly like this with no end in sight and after billions of dollars already spent. Trudeau’s been record spending for 8yrs on a plethora of Liberal pet projects yet Canada has dramatically declined under him. Accountability for return on investment funding would eliminate a lot of these self serving so called harm reduction organizations that provide zero result but constantly demand more funding that so far has only benefited them.

Would you not also cling desperately to what little autonomy and agency you still had in your crumbling life, and rebel against authoritarian oppression? That may sound a little dramatic, but think about it from their shoes. You're technically right about what programs they probably need, but practically wrong in that forcing those solutions would render them ineffective even assuming you've actually chosen the right actions to justify revoking their freedom.
If you want the horse to drink you make water available. And then you wait patiently.

Many people trying to help the homeless are actually trying to help themselves at this point. Help themselves get to heaven. It's more about them than helping the homeless with the key word being "helping". Treating the symptoms of homelessness is not the same as actually helping them restore their lives.
There is one fix and one fix only when we speak about the homeless drug addicts. >>>> Treatment. Plain and simply put, this country can't afford to treat the number of drug addicts.
To make things worse each and every day more people are becoming addicts. No amount of money spent trying to get the message out is better than viewing drug addicts dying on the streets but some how they say to themselves, hey maybe those drugs are for me. What a mess.

    • @HonoredMule
      @HonoredMule Před 6 měsíci

We can't afford _not_ to do what we can to curtail the problem at the source and get people above the poverty line before addiction sets in. In the long run, chasing symptoms will be _way_ more expensive regardless of what we and our government is willing to pay. We won't get to opt out of the lost economic output, and there's no way a problem this large is comprised primarily of people who can't be (or couldn't have been) healthy contributing members of society.
I don't mean to say it's the most immediately important thing, but I should think that's a perspective that speaks to any valid (coherent) political tribe or party platform. In the same vein, real investment into making treatment available - and providing a path to access it that exercises however much compassionate patience is needed for the treatment to work - is likely a good investment on top of being the human thing to do.

I would like to mention though that the expensive of chasing the symptoms [currently] in a way is being put onto the public rather than any Federal funds. In terms of crime and the association stress placed on society by the homeless. Every single person that has had something stolen, property damage etc not to mention always having to live in fear. That is a large part of the problem actually. Citizens are just expected to deal with it. Folks are becoming fed up and I for one don't blame them having had my motorcycle stolen just recently. This fact becomes clear to anybody living within ten blocks of any homeless camp.

What should the roll of government be in your life ?
It appears there is no individual responsibility. If you have a problem just upload it to the government.
Other than the mentally ill . Who I believe should be compelled into treatment . You have a choice in this society . Living like animals in public spaces is not the solution.
There seems to be a lot of advocates who want to do something about that . Unfortunately they want to do it with other peoples money . I don't wish to fund your poor choices in life.
All the advocates should gather together and crowd fund for the homeless.
I know this seems harsh . Be careful with saddling government as the provider of all your needs . You will inevitably wake up one day in an un-Democratic society.

"You have a choice in this society."
      Which "you" has what now?
"Be careful... You will inevitably wake up one day in an un-Democratic society."
On that we can agree. It just turns out there's more than one turn that leads to authoritarianism.

It's the American dream of clawing your way to the top with a few kicks down on the way. Leaving people behind to focus on personal gain is a core value built into Western ethos to a far greater degree than you see in any mature developed cultures which survived this long by having a greater allegiance to community.
We'll get there eventually too, whether it be the easy way (growing up and broadening our scope of genuine concern) or the hard way (rebuilding after society collapses or is toppled and replaced - possibly within our lifetimes, possibly by generational displacement which at least is peaceful).

There is no reason to be homeless in Toronto. There are many jobs in Toronto and government and health services are mostly free. These people don't want to work and prefer everything handed to them freely.

Do you honestly believe what you just typed??? Your ignorance of the facts is really obvious. NOBODY gets up in the morning and says "I think I'm going to give up everything I have and live as a homeless person ' There are factors that cause this to be the end result but wanting to live in a tent and take assistance from the government in this country are not two of the reasons.

@wellyforpm If someone gets to addiction stage I would agree in part but what about the teenager who ran away from home because her step-dad is coming to her bedroom when her mother is working nights? She's living on the streets as is the young man who was sold out by his parents for money and right next to them is the single mother who lost her min. wage job, started sleeping in her car then it was broken into and not safe anymore. She brought her daughter to live with a relative who promised to care for her but because of the cramped living situation and the addiction she now had was sleeping outside. People don't just go homeless because they want free drugs, there are all sorts of tragedies that cause someone to take to the streets and sleep in a cardboard box to be out of the snow

While the exact phrase is not found in the Bible, the concept is clearly expressed. In the Old Testament, cleanliness wasn't just “next to godliness,” it was wholly part of it. You see, the standards that God established concerning cleanliness touched on every aspect of the people’s lives. Personal hygiene and spiritual purity are intricately linked because cleanliness, both ritual and actual, was fundamental to the establishing and preserving of holiness in the biblical community.
