To be fair the amount of planning he did doesn't take alot of intelligence. He read about devil fruits and made a theory and a gamble about the power of the darkness fruit.
As for many of his others schemes he was just as lucky as the Straw Hats usually are.
All his plans would have been foiled quite often if it wasn't for a stroke of luck and things going his way.

The best way to describe Teach is that *everything* he does is for a reason: He spent decades hunting for a specific devil fruit, specifically because he knew it had abilities that others lacked, and he killed Whitebeard specifically so he could steal one of the most destructive devil fruit abilities in existence. He appears cowardly when it suits him, but in reality, it's an act: A man would need balls of solid brass to be willing to betray Whitebeard.

  • @Kalenz1234
    @Kalenz1234 Před 5 lety +768

I really like Teach as a character. Not (just) as a villian. As a character.
None of his actions or decisions are of the cliché stupid kind of evil just to be evil.
Everything made sense. Gaining the darkness fruit was something he had planned for most of his life so when Thatch denied him the fruit it's perfectly believable that in a mix of panic and rage he would just murder Thatch to gain the fruit quickly.
Later he cheered Luffy up and congratulated him but then he wants to capture and sell him to the marines as soon as he finds out about the bounty.
Some call him a hypocrite or liar for that. But he is not. When he spoke to Luffy he really spoke from his heart but when he found out that capturing Luffy could gain him a huge amount of money which would accelerate his plans he showed the capability of decisive decision-making and action. The fact that he doesn't let sentimentals stand in the way of his plans does not make him a hypocrite at all.
When Ace confronted him Teach offered him a place in his crew as his right hand man. It was Ace that forced the confrontation. Ace made himself an enemy of Teach and his plans and it's perfectly reasonable to use a captured enemy to his advantage.
I like how he is not a villain but an antagonist to our protagonist Luffy with conflicting morals but similar ideals.
The show could very well be made from the view of Black Beard as the protagonist and an anti hero instead of the Straw Hats.

    blackbeards devil fruit secret
Logia devil fruit users can become their respective element, but that transformation can be inhibited by the presence of something which naturally suppresses the element. Crocodile could be hit when he got wet, since sand clumps together when wet. Enel could be hit by Luffy, since he is made of rubber. Blackbeard cannot transform into darkness entirely, he can only create his element and project it (as all Logia users can), but his body can be hit normally even without Haki. However, this is because in all situations there is light shining on him, which is the natural inhibitor of darkness... When he is under a curtain with no light, he can entirely transform into darkness (and as his darkness can draw in Devil Fruit powers, he can then draw Whitebeard's Devil Fruit power into himself

While Luffy is chaotic good, blackboard is a lawful/true evil, I say he could be lawful because he doesn’t necessarily do evil things unless it’s needed for his goal, but true is also possible because he would also choose to be evil if it’s the fastest/most effective way to reach his goal.

And when Ace is fighting Blackbeard, there is a moment where he didnt touched Ace by his gravity because of fire lance but still landed a hit on Ace’s neck. We see him as malicious, but he does have the initial D, and it’s possible he is genuinely trying to do good in the most deplorable ways imaginable to maintain his image. He’s a selfish bastard, but so is Luffy. The biggest difference is how they go about it. Luffy is straight forward and brash, Teach is incredibly roundabout and meticulous.
Additionally, we never saw him properly before he obtained the yami yami no mi, and that could have warped his personality. As said, it’s the most evil fruit, so for all we know he killed the previous owner in self defence and after eating it decided to claim it as intentional.

I've been wondering this for a bit, could the reason that Teach didn't want to face Gecko Moria in Chapter 924 actually be because of Moria's ability to control shadows? Could Moria actually use the darkness fruit against the master of the fruit and manipulate the darkness being created as if it were merely shadow? This would force Teach to rely solely on his left hand and the stolen Quake powers. Not the ideal way to face off against the former Warlord and his army of undead.

happy birthday blackbeard!!! (love his look in the timeskip looking more like the actual blackbeard and how his actions regarding his decisions to take advantage of events remind me of ocelot from metal gear in a way.also has the best laugh & one of the best songs in the nippon judan 47 cruise cd's.:3)
while likely the weakest of the yonkos(yes i'm including luffy as it seems that blackbeards huge wins are against others not focused/weakened by exhaustion like whitebeard or recklessness like ace who did manage to get a good hit like luffy did,it's more of a take advantage of the situation when it's given which blackbeard really glorifies compared to most shonen jump villains.) it completely makes up for it with his fearsomeness that can really come out of nowhere if your not careful(also helps that he always to me looked like a fusion between bowser & a hippo both are pretty goofy looking but can be dangerous when given a chance.:3) which is why i really love that shanks is one of the few people to take him seriously.(compared to the marines who if they realized the actions he's done even if recently compared to the good guy by comparison strawhats they would've gone after him or sent the warlords after him or to wano instead of wasting their resources fighting them, especially in akainu's case since blackbeard ran from him despite having whitebeards fruit.)
i love his speech in mock town and along with not being that antagonistic as many of his actions being more out of pirate pragmatism to get closer to his goal(wasn't even that antagonistic to the strawhats until he found out about luffy's bounty, most of the fight witch ace was due to ace's recklessness when everyone was telling him to leave him be at the time/whitebeard taking to long to heed shank's warning, most of the warlords being just as selfish/arguably worse in terms of actions than teach and he did even if indirectly caused wapol to flee.and if he didn't kill thatch he probably would've gone under the others noses.) as well as him and luffy being very similar in ideals.(both are selfish and destructive with being the pirate king just in blackbeards case a hell of a lot more selfish and callous.)
i could see him having a reluctant teeth clenched team up if he weren't to be the final villain of the series or if he lowered his selfishness with his goal.(since until he finds out about luffy's goal i could see him having a different outlook if he lowered his guard and his zanzibar land esque hideout in wano makes me think in a way he wants pirates to be free like luffy but due to his past he wants huge control over it in some way, possibly what the xebec pirates leader wanted as well.)

The end does not justify the means. He has absolutely no honor of any kind. There is literally nothing he will not do, and no one he will not sacrifice to get what he wants. That is a perfect definition for evil. If you are willing to stab your team mates in the back, kill people who you invite into your home. He is treacherous and selfish, which equals evil. But in every other way he is exactly like luffy, he is a dreamer, who values his crew and believes in freedom and adventure. He has a small crew of talented weirdos he recruited and he shares the desire to find one piece and become king of the pirates, a dream very few in the series actually hold as something real and attainable. There are still a few questions but until I see both powers used at the same time or see Blackbeard obtain another df I can’t say for sure but he could likely hold and use many at a time but have the limitation of not being able to fend off attacks like when he fought Ace.

My thought is that perhaps the darkness darkness fruit possesses another ability in which the person can absorb someone else's devil fruit when they die. If it can nullify devil fruit powers then it wouldn't be out of the question that it can absorb other devil fruit powers and give the person a second devil fruit ability.
