Metal Drum VST Shootout - 1 drum beat vs. 8 Drum Plugins
Vložit
- čas přidán 17. 07. 2024
- I opened up 8 different drum plugins in their default mode to see which VST could handle this drum performance the best!
/ skip_1990
No extra mixing, EQ or processing was added to the drums except for matching their volumes to be a similar level and a limiter on the master bus to bring overall performance to a commercial volume.
The drumbeat was created with various EzDrummer MIDI packs and then edited to suit each drum plugin.

Check out my review for another drum plugin Red Pack Drums here: czcams.com/video/28ZhSfqNx1o/video.html
For anyone wondering, Krimh Drums by Bogren Digital actually has a free version. It has no time limit, and it comes with some great drum sounds and MIDI packs.
The first kit sounds amazing... Like an actual drummer. iMo
Thanks. The MIDI patterns are from various Toontrack packs. They've put in the hard work!
Great job! Loved this comparison. I have EZ2, Mario D, ML Drums... These type of comparison videos help a lot, for people to figure out if getting other drum libraries is going to be helpful or not. Thanks for making this awesome video. My favorite here was the Toontrack Death EZX. 🙌🏻🔥🥁
ML and EZ top! I also love cymbals and snare from Addictive Drums
This is very eye opening. I've bought a lot of EZDrummer products, and the Death Metal kit is definitely one if the best. And yet, I go back and forth between the Death Metal EZX and the Mixwave part and it's just so good. I'm still constantly looking for better drum sounds by mixing and editing EZDrummer, but now I think that maybe they just don't have the punch that these other ones have right out of the box.
If it wasn't for Kontakt, I would own some GGD and this MIxwave plugin.
What's wrong with kontakt?
I'm surprised to hear how well EZDrummer3 fools my ears. Sounds like an actual drummer.
Man bogren sounds so clear
very good demo
Thanks!
Thank you, great comparison video, to me mixwave and krim drums by brogen digital are the ones that sound better out of the box! Clearly any of these can sound great with proper compression, eq etc…
Yes, I consider both of those plugins ready to go in a mix.
Those Mix Wave Duplanter drums sound incredible! Way more crisp and full sounding than anything else here imo.
I love the shells - I think they came out the best. I'm a little disappointed with the cymbals though, they always sounded thin when I have it in a mix - might be me though!
I have that one, it might be my favorite drum sample pack ever! So easy to get working in a mix
@@SimonSkipper Dont have many velocity layers
yeah I can kinda hear the lack of velocity. it's a big shame because it sounds really incredible. that sure might be the greatest sound ever. might be worth it just to get that to mix in to other libraries.@@dougb3854
@@SimonSkipper I agree, the drums are amazing, but cymbals weren't
Clearly Death EZX is the best for me. Just adding some kick and snare samples from Gojira (like you do in the end) you have an incredible drum sound.
I agree. On one of my mixes ive used Death EZX and blended kick and snare from Gojira
Toontracks all day everyday 🤘🔥🖤
Man, ML Drums is honestly really quite good. Not even just for the money but just good.
It's even better with the add-ons. I have them all and it's my go-to even over SSD and EZD
@@jeanpitre5789 I have the essentials add on. I’m thinking about doing Luxe for all the snares!
best video without bull thanks
Glad you liked it!
Not my type of music but the Mario Duplantier sounds nuts. Not wild about the cymbals though. Krimh Drums is pretty great, even the free kit goes a long way.
Thank you so much for doing this! What's your favorite for the sound and also the general features?
I think EzDrumer Death EZX is my favourite but Borgren Krimh drums has the best features.
@SimonSkipper just out of curiosity, which features you like so much?
@flprmn9448 but...for songwriting then Toontrack is the best. The new tap 2 find and bandmate features are unparalleled. Also if you buy a few MIDI packs you are unstoppable!
How did you combine the samples in the last example? kits sound great!
Thanks. I just copied the MIDI on all the different tracks and then muted what I didn't want to hear.
The first preset sounds INCREDIBLE! Is it really not mixed, default "stock" sound?
Literally opening each plugin and the recorded
Clever combo of the two kits at the end! Well done!. But it's a strange comparison IMO, since EZD2 and 3 have great dedicated metal presets, yet you chose very generic presets (or left them at their default preset). For me SD3 Death and all those Mark Lewis presets are winners. That SDX is a great one!
Thank you! Sorry not enough time to go through every preset. I felt opening on the default mode was fair.
@@SimonSkipper Sure, I get that.
EZdrummer has so many good sounds...
They all sound good to me, although different kits nail things better than others like ghost notes, blast, rooms, cymbals, kick...if I were doing pro or semi pro I'd be cherry picking from different vsti's.
Check out the end where I select my favourites!
I wonder if ezx death is the ez drummer version of the death and darkness library's death portion. Because it sounded amazing. The one after was horrible. And ssd 5 kinda sounded super fake
It’s the death part of D&D sdx. Dark Matter EZX is the darkness one.
SSD basically has ZERO processing in it, which is why it sounds so bland. Wouldn't call it fake though, they aimed for a natural sounding set (like Modo). EZX etc. have a SHITTON of processing, they are basically mix ready, which is why they sound so great and punchy!
Some cool additions could be GGD Modern & Massive or GGD P5 Matt Halpern Pack, and Perfect Drums by Naughty Seal Audio
New video coming soon actually. Stay tuned
@@SimonSkipper Damn okay! I'll stay tuned!
Sounds great! What preset was used on krimh?
That was the default preset "El Natural". I really like the "Jens Mumblepants" preset too.
@@SimonSkipper that sounds absolutely killer. My fav for sure
krims or toontrack death is goated
This is the way.
I want to know which one is the best for use with a roland vad305 kit and a lot lot of them dont work well at all with digital drums
I found ezdrummer and krimh drums easiest for mapping MIDI. They come with a Roland preset, too. Hope that helps.
What kind of software did u use to both make the midi, program it, do it with different vst's, and record it?
The MIDI is a combination of different Toontrack packs with some edits made by me.
ML Drums is the best, but of course, you did the test with the FREE version... The paid version is more powerful, that for not talking about the cheap and excellent expansions! Death EZX and Khrimh Drums also sounds good, it depends...
how do those first drums sound so good...they are absolutely filthy. i mean the drums have muck and mud on them.
I forgot to clean them before recording the video. Oops!
Picking default kits for EZD2 and EZD3 was silly. They literaly have presets called "Metal" and "prog" etc...
Manda II drums has been doing the job for me free
Thanks for the tipoff!
@@SimonSkipper MTPOWERdrumkit2
How did you mix the drum kits together in the end??
I use FL studio and I pasted my MIDI score in all the piano rolls and removed what I didn't want.
Did you somehow put diffrent kits to one room?!? O.o woow how?!
What about made of metal ezx? It's great too)
I think I was leaning on Toontrack too much already! Maybe I'll do a decicated EzDrummer video.
ModoDrum 💀💀💀
Modo Drum has such great technology behind it...and it sounds terrible
Glad to know im not the only one thought those drums sounded kinda bad (especially for the price lol)
Have you tried mixing it with the multi-output option? You'll probably get a lot of opportunities that way.
@@justaamateur6533 Well, for the price of free they sound "okay" for some genre I suppose, but the paid version has more sets (like the Metal one), which most likely sounds a lot better/more suitable.
I have the paid version which unlocks the actual metal drumkits. I use a customized version of the Djentleman kit which sounds absolutely brutal and metal AF. The demonstrated and FREE studio kit is not all that suitable for metal at all imo, so not really a fair comparison when put against the paid metal kits from EZ Drummer etc.
You left out Superior Drummer3, which i find is better than the others.
I know, my budget only stretched so far!
Is there anything better than Mario’s snare
*Chef's kiss*
It'd sound better if you didn't use the default settings for each plugin as plugins like ML drums dound incredible especially with the extended kit but the default settings sounds trash because its not supposed to conform to a genre but be in the middle of most genres for easy tinkering.
My thought was to show what it sounds like as soon as you open it up. Some of the plugins are ready to go, which is great for beginners, and some need more sculpting, which is great for mixers.
@SimonSkipper I still don't think that's a great metric because what sounds good when you open it up is entirely dependent on the musical context. In the context of hard rock and metal the plug-ins designed specifically for those genres will sound good out the box because that's all they were designed for. For SOME of the plug-ins, like SSD5 and ML Drums., they are designed to be used in a multitude of genres, from rock to R&B and funk, even country. The super tight and compressed sound of metal drums is NOT what it sounds like out the box and that's not because it's a bad plug-in, but because their default settings doesn't assume a genre like some of the other plug-ins do.they have presets for those genres, which take a single click in the presets drop down list, which then showcase what they sound like in the context you are presenting, which is hard rock/metal.

And therefore, showing how a plugin sounds right atta the gate with no processing is the best way to go about it, cuz if a drum plugin sounds heavily edited atta the gate, then it's easy to say they aren't meant to be versatile.
Chill.
The Mario Duplantier is good but the toms feel dead. Death metal is the cleanest by far
Single floor as well so I feel like it makes me lose interest almost straight away. A shame as you're right, it does sound pretty good
I think with some extra EQ, compression and reverb you could fix that
Mario Duplantier sounds best to me
🐋
Get good drums takes the crown
Wish I had the money to review them!
@@SimonSkipper I just uploaded a new single, and I used the GGD PV kit. I’d really appreciate you if you checked it out bro!
i use metal machine and its perfect
I have that one too and love it! No ride edge though :(
ez2 its so bad
This is such a fallacious comparison.
Some of these plugins have processing on them, some of them are completely raw, some of them are mix ready, some are ready to be implemented in a mix.
Each of these plugins have their own pros and cons and none of the pros or cons are the way they sound, because they can all equally sound amazing.
I also don't understand the choices of plugins. Who is going to use EZD2 these days? They don't even sell it anymore?
Where is superior drummer 3 and get good drums? You know, the drum companies primarily focused on metal and rock?
Hi, sorry you found the video fallacious. As I stated, I've opened the plugins in their default state so the watcher could decide how much extra processing is needed.
Also, the truth is I ran out of money for plugins but wanted to reach 8 drum libraries. If you would like to see SSD3 and GGD drums then a $920AUD donation would cover it and I could make other video. A donation link is below! Cheers

"Who is going to use EZD2 these days?"
Toontrack sells the EzD2 core library as an expansion if you didn't know, and it still sounds very good
@@tony_kun I didn't say it's not good, but you can either pay for the EZD2 library or spend your money on EZD3, which is significantly better sampled. And if not, they can go for the other 30+ expansions, all of which beat the core library easily.
also they release EZdrummer 3 which a lot of people like for the Bandmate feature @@tony_kun
there's actually quite a bit of merit to playing them all raw. People who are just getting into mixing or just want a quick decent sound for band demos want to know which kit has the best sound right out of the gate. @@ross_jones_music
