  • In this video Robbie goes over the process of converting a Brompton bicycle into electric drive using one of our geared SOFP motor front hub kits. The Brompton bike has a special 75mm wide fork with a tiny 8mm axle and requires a specially designed hub motor and torque arm solution, and the folding nature of the frame requires care around the cable routing process. For more information on this kit see our info page here:
    ebikes.ca/product-info/grin-k...
    The use of a torque or PAS sensor on the kit is optional and the installation on that is covered in the following videos:

    Wow! Has it been 7 years already that I put a motor and CA v2 on my Brompton? Back then, I had to source the motor, controller, throttle, switches, torque sensor, rim, spokes, CA and batteries separately. And 80mm motors were the narrowest I could get then. Which meant spreading the forks, widening the dropout slots, etc. And making sure the cable harnesses did not interfere with the fold took a lot of effort. To this day, the setup runs just fine. The geared Keyde motor is now a little noisy. But it works fine. Good job on your kit!

    Hey @Grin - just curious which kits you'd recommend for converting a TERN folding bike? Would the same geared motor kit work as for the Brompton?

      Have a look at Tern breakages, if your going "e" it use a rear wheel kit.

    Hi. Greetings from Argentina. How do you compare in terms of confort an effort the Bromton with a 20 inch foldable bike such as Tern or Dahon?

    • @b.griffin317
      @b.griffin317 Před 10 měsíci

      Bromptons are very bumpy on those little wheels. I would say my Tern 20" though is more uncomfortable to ride because the Brompton does have a small shock absorber in the rear and I have a shock absorbing Brooks saddle on the Brompton.

    Very neat. What is the power rating of the motor ? Does it comply with the European 250 W. limit ?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 3 lety +1

      It's definitely lower in power than many of the hub motors sold on EU compliant ebikes in europe, but it will go faster than 24 kph unless you set a speed limit in the motor controller. Ratings as you should know don't mean much. ebikes.ca/learn/power-ratings.html

    • @dingr
      @dingr Před 3 lety +1

      A 250W label on a motor just means that manufacturer says that it can handle 250W. It doesn't specify the upper limit to what you can drive that motor at.

    How fast does it go before the assistance gives out?

    • @b.griffin317
      @b.griffin317 Před 10 měsíci

      the Cycle Analyzer can be programmed to cut off the assist at any level you like, including none. A friend of mine with this on his Brompton goes well above 30mph.

    You had to remove the gear shifters to install the throttle and multi-function switch but I never saw you put them back. What happens to them in this set-up?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 10 měsíci

      The brompton gear shifters are never removed, they stay on the handlebar the whole time. It's only the grips that need to be removed to install the throttle.

    I have had an e-Brompton for two years. Under normal city conditions, I can drive only 20 km on it. Should I buy a new battery? There is no other solution? Can you improve it yourself, e.g. by replacing the cells in the battery? Is there an instruction on how to do this somewhere?
    (I don’t have access to an authorized Brompton service center.)

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a fairly advanced skill set to replace all the cells in a prioprietary battery pack like that, requiring spot welders, soldering equipment, familiarity with wiring and BMS circuits etc. 20 km from a 36V 8Ah nominal battery isn't too bad, and if you need more range by far the simplest thing will be to purchase a 2nd e-brompton battery to have two of them on hand.

    • @lech2050
      @lech2050 Před 2 lety

      @@GrinTechnologies OK, thanks for that wise answer. I think buying a second battery is the only way out of this situation. But it's also not that simple: I don't know where to buy it and whether it is possible to send the battery by post now. Besides, I was hoping for a cheaper solution.

    Hi!
    Is the hub disc brake compatible? I’ll be using a wider custom fork.
    Thanks!

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 3 lety

      It is not. If you have a wider fork that is disk compatible, you should use a standard 100mm OLD geared hub motor like the SX1 or G311

  • @9canadianboy

    You should do the bike Friday since they sell Ligos.... ;-)

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 3 lety +2

      You mean an updated version of this? czcams.com/video/rtDn56TzGTk/video.html
      Nice thing about the Bike Friday lineup is that they use 100mm front fork dropout spacing, so any hub motor will work. It doesn't need to be a special narrow motor like the Brompton.

      @9canadianboy Před 3 lety

      @@GrinTechnologies Yes, there is a lot of noise in the facebook bike friday groups. I never saw that video before, good job. BTW the NWT is the one most folk are getting itchy about e-assisting.

    Hi Grin! I have just had this sofp motor installed on my Brompton. I understand this motor is meant to have some noise, but there is what seem to be extra noise when the motor isn't engaged. I'm wondering if this is normal? It's like a rushing noise - it doesn't happen when the motor is engaged, and as soon as I release the throttle on the motor, the noise starts. Almost like the freewheeling motor is more noisy? I hope this makes sense. Can you offer me some insight into this?

    • @GrinTechnologies
      @GrinTechnologies  Před 3 lety +1

      This is definitely a noisier geared motor than many other geared hubs, and part of that seems to be because the planet carrier pins are mounted directly to the shell of the hub. When the motor is not engaged the gears are still turning as is the internal freewheel clutch, what you could be hearing is the freewheel turning over. Send us an email if it gets noisier over time but I wouldn't be too worried.

    BROMPTON ELECTRIC. "THE WORLDS MOST UNRELIABLE BIKE?”.. Both of my Electric Brompton"s continuously keep braking down. The poor quality bearings & electronics keep failing. Brompton knows about this. But just keeps replacing them with same the parts. Buy yourself several Chines copies for the same price. Or better still a Honda CBR 125cc motorcycle for the same price. Feel less disappointed & save yourself a fortune.

      Will this is not the brompton electric bicycle this is a totally independent kit added to a regular non electric brompton. We've had customers sell their factory electric bromptons and buy a regular brompton to convert over,for both better performance and reliability.
