currently rewatching glee with my partner (who has never seen it before) and we're absolutely losing our minds over the west side story arc, like it WILD. you're so correct that the performances save it. can't wait to hear your thoughts on NPMD!!!
There's so much I forgot when I was rewatching the episodes for the video. It's wild how out there they got with the storylines and I kind of just accepted it as a teenager but looking back I'm like wtf. They always put out some bangers though haha

in regards to a student coming back to play a role, it happened to me! when my school did addams family, our fester got kicked out, so we brought in a guy who graduated!
Fascinating! And that is a pretty big role. I guess in this case Glee is reflecting reality. Closest thing I had to that was at weeklong summer camp a counselor stepped in for a role when the original girl got sick but not quite as dramatic. Also from that NPR list that's such a hugely popular show for high schools nowadays. I feel like I know at least one local school who's done it every year for the past couple of years. Hope your production went well.
Wait, You're The One That I Want is not in the stage version? I've been to three different stage versions (2006/2007, 2015/2016, and 2023) and they've all had that one. Is that like how in The Sound of Music, songs like Something Good were movie originals but end up also being used in stage productions now?
Yeah it's similar it seems like for Sound of Music you can get Something Good added to the licensing for an additional fee. With Grease you have to go through a different company because different people own the rights to the movie songs. I'm sure plenty of schools will just add these songs without the licensing anyway though it's not like the copyright police are showing up at every high school's production of Grease to check if they stuck to the exact script. Cabaret is a slightly different example where Maybe This Time was added into later broadway/west end productions and is now in one of the licensed versions.
