  • Marie Kondo (“KonMari”) is a Japanese organising consultant, author and visionary entrepreneur. She developed a revolutionary method of organising known as the KonMari Method, which consists of gathering together everything you own, one category at a time, and then keeping only those things that "spark joy" - as well as choosing a dedicated place to store them. Going far beyond a typical “tidying how-to”, her method is a way of life and a state of mind that encourages you to cherish the things that bring you true joy-a refreshing alternative to today’s mass consumer society.

I think she was wearing an earpiece, with the English words piped in to her. But perhaps not. Either way, I agree with you, it took a lot of courage to get up there in front of all those people to give a talk in a language she's not 100% comfortable in yet. Good for her.

That aside I agree with you, even if that was the case that still takes some serious courage. My favourite thing about the Konmari method is the relationship you build with your belongings and the joy that you get from them. People should really give her more credit for the fact that she has found the secret to happiness. It ends your frustrations and you no longer feel like you need to buy things to fill that void in your soul. It teaches you how to find joy in what you already have and how to properly take care of your belongings. A tidy home is just a result of all that and happens naturally.

I agree absolutely in principle with what you say, Mulan 121. For some, though, it's less simple: being affected by excessive hoarding, ADHD and/or poverty can mean using the Konmari method is much harder to address. I can only now address a lot of my own hoarding and inability to say no to items offered to me because I'm finally in a (slightly) better financial situation than I have been for the last 25 years.
Konmari's method has been a revelation, frankly, and I am already starting to feel the weight of burden and despair lift as a result. But I simply couldn't have got rid of a lot of stuff I've been able to these past few days, because I never knew where the next penny was coming from (poverty can be massively disabling).

@@gillywillybythesea I feel you! I find that the ease with which people can divest themselves of things can often be linked to resource scarcity, or resource abundance. Marie Kondo’s approach is working for me because she respects the energetic worth of every item. I’ve always had respect for my belongings, but kept too much stuff “just in case.” I’m able to let things go now much more easily.

It cracks me up how a lot of people only take away the folding technique from the KonMari method. I have been using this folding method since Linda Coopersmith popularized it on Clean House, but Marie's book has TRULY changed my relationship with my home and my things. The spirit of the KonMari method is so much more; folding is just an easy and fun thing to demonstrate during a lecture or interview. But the visualization, the care for your belongings, the spirituality assigned to objects, and the honing of the feeling of joy, have over the last few years improved everything for me. I have not yet finished my tidying campaign, but the categories i have finished have remained tidy and it is a joy for me to use the items i kept.

    • @bluejay5531
      @bluejay5531 Před 6 lety +9

I agree, I have yet to apply the method, mainly because I have so much stuff that I have a hard time finding categories and it feels extremely overwhelming to do it this way, so I am pre-decluttering first. But it is the whole mindset and spirit she conveys that makes so much sense, a true inner shift. I also have a hard time with the folding technique wondering how it does not make so much more creases in the clothes? I am hesitant because it seems I would have to be ironing a lot more that way...

I find this mentality so much better than the 'practical'/detatched way we seem to do it in the west. Many people seem to use a practical/guilt-tripping/mathematical approach. (get rid of xx% of your things, do you *need* all these things, how long since you used it last, etc.)
We are almost punishing ourselves when we declutter, and shaming ourselves for being so bad. But this is a very negative way to declutter, and I sometimes wonder if this is why so many people find decluttering difficult. Because they associate it with negative emotions, and a negative experience.
With the Marie Kondo method, you think much more positively. You are allowed to keep things that bring joy to your life - even if it is not 'rational', or it is not something you use every single day. It also impacts your shopping habits. You start to buy fewer items, and only thing that sparks joy. And things that truly represent your personal essence.

This woman made a messy person like me enjoying folding my jeans right in the middle of the video.
And it never looked so beautiful. Like an artwork? How can that be? And how can folding clothes be fun and so enjoyable and satisfying.
I realized, I also was afraid of cleaning up, because its a subtracting process, like it makes me feel losing something. Now it makes me just feel giving more honour and value to the things i really love what makes it feel good to say goodbye. Also I realized I early created a bad feeling to cleaning up, because it was a very negative process in the past. I can work with this now from a whole other perspective now. I also realized how spoiled i am and how unthankful i am when not caring about my belongings proerly.
Thank you so much, Kondo Sensei, to teach the world.

The sweetest personality!! Can't you just feel her loving energy?! She is helping to organize my life by coming up with hacks that make tidying up worthwhile. For example, her folding methods. Who wants to fold a bunch of laundry, put it away, just to have to rifle through it every morning - undoing all that previous effort? You know with her method, that once it's completed all items will be accessible and remain neat. Also, the gratitude part is SO important. Especially if you're the type to get emotional about certain items. THANKING every item for its usefulness in your life prior to donating or discarding it, breaks that OCD-ish bond with "stuff" and leaves one feeling as if it's okay to let it go. IT WORKS!! You gotta love this lady! I do! : )

She is wonderful. Her method is truly life changing magic! I took several weeks after reading her book & Kon Mari'd my home from top to bottom. It feels so different- lighter, fresher, happier. I'm more than satisfied with the results, AND we've been able to keep it this way for several months now. She is correct when she says you need only do it once. You then have the right tools, and perspective, to keep your life organized, tidy & full of gratitude. I have since moved on to KonMari my office at work, too :) It really, really works. Love Marie!

We could all use a bit of organization in our lives the way I see she helps ask the right questions to ourselves when tidying something whatever we keep we need to have some sort positive emotional attachment otherwise what's the point LOL

That part about storing same items in just one place is probably common sense to a lot of people, but it was a revelation to me several years ago. Now I know where all my hats are. And all my drill bits. And all my art supplies. And . . . and . . . and . . .

I have always been better than most people about clutter, but she gave me the missing piece of the puzzle with the "sparks joy?" And thanking an item before you say goodbye to it. That helps a lot.

Keep up the good work! メッチャ大ファンです!
