Hello Wonders! Some quick, very important messages I think I should address as a content creator with some influence.
1) I decided not to include the ‘grunge’ aesthetic (which I’ve included in my videos before) because I don’t want to promote an aesthetic which romanticises things such as drugs and depression. These things are neither an aesthetic nor a trend and is insensitive to those who have experienced or are experiencing their effects.
2) Some of you have never heard of nostalgiacore, and I want to explain it a bit. It’s also associated with dreamcore which in my context is slightly bizarre imagery that brings back strange childhood memories; rooms and objects which you see in your dreams that bring a funny sense of nostalgia.
However, there are some other ‘aesthetics’ that seem similar on the surface but aren’t underneath. The main difference in my opinion is the intention behind the images. These are traumacore and lostcore which shouldn’t be considered aesthetics because they shouldn’t be desired or glorified by people who don’t understand. They often have the same types of visuals but reflect deeper concepts by the disturbing words and phrases often used alongside the images which can change the mood drastically.
These delve into themes of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual abuse; trauma; loneliness, anxiety and abandonment. People who relate may turn to these images to help them cope with their past sufferings.
*It isn’t right to participate if you aren’t a survivor of trauma.*
Instead of an aesthetic, it’s more appropriate to call it a form of art therapy.
If you are struggling, please talk to someone about it. In my opinion, it’s harder these days partly due to the glamorisation of mental illnesses in media, leading many people to think others are ‘faking’ which really isn’t always the case.
