My god I picked up my guitar last night and I kept going back to that tune….that melody feels really nice to sing.

Walked around in a chalk outline for over 5yrs. Feel this song completely. There is no limits to what Ren can do. Haven't been this excited about an artist in a very, very long time.

Yeah, the chalk outline is, indeed, the mark s police investigator makes around a dead body. In Ren's song he is using it as an analogy for the feeling induced by psychotropic medication. This man is a modern day genius. His creative talent seems to have no boundaries. Not only that, his subject matter is always so relatable. He has the soul of a true poet and delivers his lines with sincerity and authenticity. I love his duets with Chinchilla. Their voices blend so well and are equally as emotive ... I enjoyed your reaction video Michael. Blessings brother. 🙏

@@michaelgoyettemusic Ren's duet HOW TO BE ME ( LIVE ) with Chinchilla is equally as powerful. It is a song about Ren's friend who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. The video they shot was on a bridge. His friend's body was, apparently, not found. For what it is worth, I think this song is the duet's strongest vocal performance. Peace & love brother

I still get goosebumps every time and I've yet to make it through the entire video without crying, even during reactions. To say that it hit me hard would be a gross understatement. Every time I marvel at how you can pick up on the key they are singing in. My brain registers 'high', 'low' and 'stuff in between'. I'm sure it's second nature to musicians, but it feels like magic to the rest of us!
How to be Me (live) is even better. (Written about a good friend who lost his life to his personal struggles.)
I coulda learned the chords with the sound off on this one though!! His fingers were plain to see!! Hey low high is how it starts and then gets better with time. Cheers.

Thanks for breaking down the vocals. I think what she does with his root vocal is fascinating. It reminds me of Exene Cervenka but even better pipes. Alongside but not really wedded to it. It’s my favorite of his.
There’s more to it than I said in the video….it’s not all parallel harmony….she’s up in the E major scale around a 3rd but changes a note here and there to fall on a note in the chord….and sometimes she’s singing an alternate melody and just avoids hitting the same notes Ren is hitting….if singers want a more detailed breakdown I don’t mind spending more time as long as it doesn’t bore ppl. Cheers.

I felt this one in my soul! Some medications just make you feel numb like you just float with no emotion. I have felt this way before medication after medication. And when he said afraid to feel ok. Damn isn't that the truth so hard to feel hope that maybe this time things will be OK but we just can't take the chance. Medication can be a savior or an enemy

I always opted for street drugs which brought a whole bunch of different issues. I don’t have first hand experience with such meds but the song still resonates. It’s powerful.
For just a split second at the very end Chinchilla reminded me of Judy Garland 😊
As a guitar player, I found this song incredibly interesting. It's a powerful, but very interesting musically.
Every note he plays is a perfect fit for the song. A lot of times, I'm just playing on top of stuff or layering sounds to make pretty noise.
His playing is always exactly what's needed, whether it's simple, or he doing that cool, and very heavy handed flaminco style he does so well.

Yo Mike, to check out what Ren was like in his teens, search "Trick the Fox The Mash Up". Trick the fox was Ren with a friend of his(can't recall his name) and the song is really good and quite funny in parts, if you keep your eyes on the screen! It might be interesting for you to see the beginnings of the maestro he is now.

Flickering lights in a Ren video means something! Pay attention!
Loud chair...lol... Ren seems to find a way to make some noise at the beginning of each live video to confirm it is (in fact) live. I love how he can play fairly minimal guitar and still make such beautiful music. I could sit and listen to him play for hours. If only schools taught guitar instead of the recorder and violin... worst years of my life listening to the kids try and learn the violin. To this day I think the recitals were the music teachers revenge.

That's cool you have so much Ren original stuff to still go through. If you like the Chinchilla vibe, "How to be me (live)" is amazing. His colabs with Eden are some of my favorites (Ocean, and Humble). You can't really go wrong whatever you pick. Team yo.

Had a happy afternoon watching chunks of my playlist you've reacted to ! Cheers 🍻🇬🇧 ... unless it's classically composed then I'm so much more involved in live music WITH the imperfections 🤷♂. Forgot to say about the inglorious places with the best acoustics - nice !
I find them refreshing as well…..I hope the trends keeps going in that direction.
I found that this was REN's most powerful song lyrically. The lump in my throat for ... " But so it goes, let it be, In the gallows, I balanced on my toes, So I can breathe " ... How many times does a guy have to flirt with suicide to paint with that level of imagery ??? I know I'm a big suck. If somebody kicks a dog in a movie my face leaks ... this song hit harder.
I'm probably projecting but ... to me it sounds like he is talking about the difference between the antipsychotic medications that he is being fed by his Psychiatric Doctors compared to the street opiates that he chooses to use to self medicate. The floating 'chalk lines' representing the prescription meds that create a disassociated state that is notoriously and uncomfortably numbing to keep psychosis at bay, the side effect being that it still feels like death in the way that you are unable to recognize any sense of self. The alternative is that opiates work to escape the psychosis, VERY TEMPORARILY, but also in a very dangerous and reckless way. The struggle is between the methods of escape from the psychosis. Do you face the feeling of being dead to yourself in a prolonged dissociated state or do you just accept the slow but inevitable suicide of opiate addiction that comes with the SEDUCTION of "... a sip of serotonin ...". I'm hearing Chinchilla as the seduction ... the duet of her voice representing the artificial euphoria of the opiate. Do you just DRAW the chalk outline yourself ... or 'merely exist' in the chalk outline you are being administered? I personally can't imagine having to make that decision, especially when it is a decade long process to recovery, as in Ren's case. Either way ... being erased must feel like the end result while you are inside that 'forever' struggle. The 'moments of clarity' would be few and far between. I imagine this would be just as unsettling as the original psychosis until one is far enough into recovery to ACTUALLY TRUST the hope that clarity brings. Unfortunately, addiction combined with poor mental health is an extremely complicated situation and very poorly understood, resulting in the epidemic we are seeing out there on our streets. Sorry ... I'm just talking out my ass here but this is where the song took me ... sorry for the novel.
I know you are more about the guitar and music structure ... as a vocalist I tend to get lost in the text and subtext. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for those insights….I’m not eloquent when talking about emotions but I feel them too….I find it easy to talk about notes and phrases…..but I still notice other things.
Having said that I had no idea he messed with opiates…..I’m not sure if you saw my breakdown of Hi Ren but I speak about how I believe Ren is the most important sing writer I’ve heard since Kurt Cobain….I really hope they only start out the same way and that Ren has a happier ending. I tried heroine once and it was so awesome I decided to never do it again….as a musician it opens up ideas…..very alluring…..I know that’s not why he would take them but it is a side effect that’s hard to deny.
I’m learning so much from Ren and his fans. I’m truly loving this whole experience. Thanks again for sharing.
@@michaelgoyettemusic Please don't think that I have any knowledge of REN using any drugs outside of his prescribed regiment of antipsychotics. As I prefaced ... I'm probably projecting. My poison was crack cocaine and I wasted a couple years as a functional addict before I snapped out of it. This was 25ish yrs ago now and I STILL get triggered and feel the stupid itch. LOL ... Thank doG I've done the work (including the one off relapses - just to remind me why I stopped) and I have a good toolbox of coping skills now. Lots of people don't have that capacity. My mental health issues were mostly self inflicted.
When I originally heard this song it took me back 20ish years to when I was newly recovering ... The imagery was shockingly familiar, and matched up perfectly with the scenario I described above. I can only imagine the fear and confusion of a mental illness that was not self inflicted. My heart pours out to these people who suffer often in silence and are misunderstood. Like I say ... we have at least a million lost people in North America, undiagnosed mentally ill people living on the streets just trying to survive without the resources to fix it.
Heroine is a particularly nasty habit. Thank the good doG that you recognized the danger. I was a little too haywire for Heroine ... small miracles !!! I hear your concern with Ren and what you are saying about how our other genius that didn't (or felt he couldn't) get the help ... the hard story is sometimes too real. When we go back in history and dissect the imagery of Cobain's lyrics it looks stark ... 20/20 hindsight right ???

Yo Mike ,it is just Chinchilla the x is like us saying and or ft. I think it is a British thing? Chinchilla was a special guest on Sting's My song tour in 2019. She has opened for McFly also. My favorite is Ren x Chillchilla - How to be me (Live) Ren lost his friend to suicide and they never found him.(Jumped off a bridge) Tragic. Ren is a master at making you feel!

Thanks for this great reaction. Even though I deeply love this song's raw beauty, and the lyrics hit me hard; it only shows only of a tip of Chinchilla's iceberg for her voice range and tonal versatility. She is talented AF and I wish somebody made a reaction of one of her solo live performances such as "Vero Presents: Chinchilla - Fingers (live)". I also fall in love with Ren's talent and nowadays all reaction channels are going deep through the Ren rabbit hole, everybody appreciate her voice but never try her other songs.

An absolutely beautiful song and so relatable. I too used to (and still do to some extent) bury all my problems and struggles beneath a smile. Its not to deceive those around me, but to ensure i'm not a burden to them with the immense amount of emotional baggage i carry. Because no one wants to be around someone whose always down and depressed. I too had been put on zoloft (sertraline - which chinchilla opens up with) and it was the most horrid drug i have ever been prescribed. It should be taken off the market. It leaves you feeling emotionless, like a zombie, dead inside, unable to feel happy, unable to feel sad. I had to stop it eventually, because, believe it or not, not feeling anything was worse than hurting. Nothing was more terrifying than being on that medication and the days disappearing in a blur of meaningless existence.

Your story is relatable to me as well….I’ve never been on prescribed drugs but I’ve self medicated for years. I’ve tried to lean on a friend and it makes everything worse. So I keep shit to myself most of the time too. Thanks for sharing…..much respect….keep up the good fight and speak your truth here any time you like…..cheers.

They are not people I know but they are trained to listen and give me helpful feedback and advice. I used to keep things inside and hide behind a smile in my younger days. I find sharing gets my thoughts out of head and puts everything back into perspective.

@@michaelgoyettemusic I am in Australia and we have some great services in this area. Has helped me a lot over the years. I think when you speak your thoughts out loud and someone who is really listening to you responds you are able to see yourself more clearly. I have been doing art therapy recently and am finding this a wonderful medium for expressing yourself. Has helped me understand myself much better. I did some art whilst listening to Hi Ren with my art therapist which was useful.

After watching a bunch of his stuff I firmly believe the "imperfections" are totally planned for theatrics especially on the one takes. He will bend chords at certain point even though he can totally play. He will mess around with his voice

I love Chinchilla's voice! Lol it took several listens for me NOT to focus on her nails😂. I can't wait till you get to "How to be me" live (Ren is wearing red and she has a tan hat) the connection between them in that song is crazy!
I love her too….I was reprimanded for mentioning her nails before remarking on her voice….I’m pretty sure that’s the order I experienced them in though….she made it seem like it was a sad male trait to even point it out…..glad it’s not just men…..anyway thanks for the suggestions I can’t wait to see more!!

Being old, and a little slow, I'm just now beginning to think that this guy is the new Bob Dylan. His lyrics and collaborations evoke the emotions and show the struggles of more people than the rest of us think. He is pointing out that we don't all share the same views, or challenges in life. That being said, this is the newest piece of art from this phenom that will rattle around in my brain for a long time.

Correct about chalk outlines, although Ren is using it to mean dead on the inside. And it is just Chinchilla, think of the "X" as an "&".
