I know this video was posted years ago... but I just have to say I love your attitude, not just to bikes, but life.. I'm 62 and going back to bikes after a 40 year break.. it didn't take me long to realise that I was not as good as I remembered but having people like yourself sharing knowledge and advice, especially hammering home the more training part, it is absolutely priceless.. thank you.. Take it easy..

  • @princeofpeaceproductions3506

Just got back into riding as a 53 year old guy...I rode a ton in my teens and twenties...we never had content like this in the 80’s ...I learned by crashing twice...not being defensive and literally knowing nothing of counter steering-we would get permits and never go to class or practice...thank you so much you’ve already made me way better... and as an older guy I value your wisdom with gear etc... thanks a lot..got your app and my cones in a bag on my bike..oh yeah and I bought a bike that was great to practice on instead of some big cool bike..love my Vulcan s ..thank you again for the vids

This video may be nearly 2 years old, but this is timeless, sage advice--thank you. I am much older than you, will be 59 in a couple weeks, and I live my life with much humility because, well, I have been humbled so many times in life and by life. I have been practicing my profession for nearly 28 years, and about 11 years ago, I met a gentleman, also in my profession, that was retired but had been appointed by the President to his position. In other words, he has forgotten more than I will ever know. He looked me square in the eye, and said, "so tell me, after 17 years of practicing, what have you learned?" I thought for a number of moments, realized I was never going to impress this guy, and simply said, "You know, what I've learned is how much I still don't know." He smiled and said, "yes, exactly, you'll always feel that way and you'll continue learning for the rest of your life." If I do get a bike, I will have this same attitude, i.e., hang with those so much smarter than you and never stop learning or practicing. Thanks again!

Thanks for this. I’m only 4 months in and only 200 miles on my new road king special. 190 of those miles are me in the Parking lot across the street doing emergency braking, slow race, figure 8s, understanding the friction zone etc. only reason I’m on the main road at times now is to get to the bigger Parking lot up the road so I can do the rest of the slow maneuver exercises

Been riding over 50 years and I'm still guilty of some of these. One thing I do practice regularly is swerving. Most definitely saved my life in my closest call ever about a week ago. Time to roll up my sleeves and get back to work. Thanks for the much needed helping of humility...

YOU, MY FRIEND, NAILED IT AS FAR AS EGO. I'm like you, I want to be fed with more knowledge and experience. I will continue to take your advice and continue to take courses because like you said, there can be something that an instructor may say or show me that might actually keep it more simple for me to understand and work with to become a better, safer rider. Thank you so much for making this awesome video! Humble I'll be and humble I will continue because ego gets the best of people that's for sure!

I'm still doing the basic course now but you mentioned the corner-gravel-stopped truck situation and I am curious how you would approach that. Waw, last year one week after i took msf course i was gonna buy a bike 100 miles away from home and was planing ride it back home, but the guy refuse to sell me the bike he didnt even want me in his property for stupid reason in 2017, this is not our subject i wont talk about his reason, anyway all had with me open face helmet and walmart gloves and was gonna jump on the bike and ride it back 100 miles, after watching this video i realize how ignorant i was, and it was good thing that guy didnt sell me the bike even his reason had nothing to do with my safety or something. I learned alot from this video thank u so much. Another thing i learned yesterday driving my car in Traffic so my right foot got tired of breaking, so i tried to use left foot to break but i was breaking hard and not knowing the measurements of breaking with left foot, thats exactly how new riders do with breaking with hands because new rider hand did not use to break and do not know the measurement of breaking. fast addie ur lives saver.

What you said towards the end really spoke to me not really about motorcycles but like real life. Surrounding yourself with the right people will help you out immensely. And someone's ego really limits them to their full potential. I never thought about that in depth. But sometimes to be honest, I'll feel like I'm too cool for this guy just cause he sees my heavily modded sports car or I don't need to give this person acknowledgement or like you said I don't need to learn this stuff just cause its pointless. I need to lose my ego, and just be more open minded. It's hard because I think we all get caught up in this system of ethics or whatever you call it that we don't realize what we do and why we think the things we do. Glad I watched this video!

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 5 lety +1

That's awesome!! Once someone is truly honest and starts to dig down to figure out why they do things, it can be like dropping a big weight off your back. Pressure from society, peer pressure to do this, buy this, etc are all bs holding you down and keeping you trapped in the rat race. It's incredibly freeing to walk away from all that. The first step you just did, which is the hardest! Actually admitting things about yourself and looking inward. Good for you! Keep going! Start to pay more attention to what you're doing/saying to other and why, but more importantly, what you're saying to yourself.

Gear can be expensive but there are ways to save money. You can get a Snell rated helmet with a Sharp 4 star rating for $200, even less if you find a model on clearance because it has been "updated." Same with Jackets, etc. Find "last year's" model. Revzilla has good reviews and some good sales if you shop around. I got a Scorpion 410 with Snell and Sharp's ratings for $150. I wanted a spare helmet for passengers.

But when I found your channel, I focus part of the ride to train more.
But our challenge is that we don't have parking lots to train in which is challenging.
And also our streets are very slippery, where it's not easy to lean the bike alot.

Love your story of the big old adventure bike vs sport bikers. Man I haven't laughed so hard about straights, corners and super charger since I told a Ferrari guy that "yup, I have one supercharger and two turbos chargers" on my 2 litre, 4 banger 1988 BMW M3. When I opened the hood to show him, he actually looked for a whole minute before he asked me where they were. As a beginner on two wheels, I know I have a long way to go, but doing it right will be the same way I progressed on four wheels. Drinking from the firehose of knowledge, bring it on.

Hi Eddie. I think it's a shame that not even 7,000 viewers have watched this video. I hope more will come across it. I posted a link to it on my Facebook page including a recommendation to watch it. I have watched it before but I think it's one of those that should be watched again every so often. Need to be reminded that anything can happen out on the roads and if you have half a brain, you should be taking the time to prepare yourself for it. Not just for yourself but also for those who care about you and are probably concerned that you even ride a motorcycle. :D
Now that the weather is warming up ( 40s - 50s ) I've begun to practice again. In fact I even had my first close call for the new season. LOL As always, many thanks for your efforts Eddie.

Part of being a super instructor is having a solid understanding of human behavior and human psychology. I honestly feel that this is something that can't actually be learned, but rather, you are blessed with. You either have it, or you don't. YOU....DEFINITELY HAVE IT. Now combine that with an advanced level of knowledge, and the love for what you are doing, is what sets you apart from the rest. Nice job!!! Can't thank you enough!!!

I wonder what’s your opinion on experienced cyclist wanting to get into motorcycling. Don’t you think their riding experience as cyclist will affect positively their learning curve on a motorcycle?
What you mention about countersteering sounds insane for many but not for me. I do it every day on my bicycle. It surprises me when motorcycle riders I know still refuse to accept it!

I have been watching your videos and thank you. I rode moped (hard, everyday in rain and snow) then at 18 I bought a car. fast forward 32 years and I get a Suzuki TU250. After the class and got my license, all I thought about was I am going to fall. Sometime somewhere I don't know when. My first fall was going around a turn - for some reason the curb made a 90 degree turn and a whole lane disappears. This was at dusk. I should have looked at where I wanted to go rather than the obstacle. Thank you for then. I practiced hard break several times on every ride. When the big dumb truck pulled out in front of me -- little back - down shift - off the throttle - lightly on the front. Not stopping quick enough more back brake and now the wheel slips. Yes I slid sideways - no bike dump - looked very cool. No I don't feel like a pro - I feel lucky. We cannot go wrong practicing stopping. Dang, any moron can go fast straight. Stopping takes skills. Going very slow takes skills. Thank for your videos

First off, I completely agree with everything you stated in this video and I really love the videos you produce.
Secondly, I am a new motorcyclist due to another driver totaling my 2013 Huyndai Elantra. I was pushed into a 2022 Kawasaki Vulcan 650 S by a sales staff that saw me coming from a mile away.
I really enjoy riding the bike and I have so much to learn and cornering and slow spd manuvers are my main focus. I have felt counter steering and counter balancing.
Finally, I assume I will have to get crash bars and protective equipment to ever begin to push the limits of the bike and myself. I live paycheck to paycheck and things are not getting any cheaper. Do you have any minimal inexpensive gear suggestions? and Would you agree that the need for $200 crashbars to be able to push limits and protect a $9000 investment?

Appreciate the videos for sure, watched lots of them for 6 months before getting my bike. Any suggestions for finding someone like you in my area? (Central Ohio) I looked for more training after I took the basic MSF course, but seems like they only offer the basic class and a returning rider class for older people coming back after a while. I know I'm nowhere near trying to find a racetrack to go to either. Thanks dude 👍

I'm so grateful to find your videos. I'm a rookie. Took my course 3 years ago I've been made fun of for being afraid on my bike. I'm afraid of my bike because I don't know what I'm doing yet. I didn't have a choice at the time of what bike I have because I got a chance to trade a car for it. Never could have afforded one otherwise. It's a 1985 Honda V45 Magna. I find it top-heavy but at least I'm not intimidated by the power because I realize I control that with my clutch so I never was afraid of that. But I've known from the start that the only way I'll be able to ride this bike is 2 gets skills. Big time skills. I get made fun of because I've only been on the highway twice. The way I see it, if I don't know what to do at slow speeds, on the highway anything that's going to happen will happen even faster so I have no business there until I know what I'm doing for my own sake and everyone else. Thank you so much for your safety message above all else! It makes me feel so much better about being so cautious. Ride safe everyone

Hi Fast Eddie, you're definitely preaching to the choir about taking more courses. I, for one, am all for it. I'm still a new rider when it comes to miles and years. Do you have any recommendation as far as going beyond my first MSF course? Every time I type in rider courses, I only find the beginning rider course. Would love to know your recommendations. I find it crazy that in 2 days you can ride what you want in America. In the UK if you take the 1 day course you’re only good to ride a 125cc and only for 2 years, not at night, not with a passenger and not on the motorway (freeway). I had to do a theory test, the one day course, a manoeuvres course and a road riding assessment and the training in between to be able to ride what I want. And I still learned a hell of a lot my first year.

One trick I found for this as a new rider myself is thinking about the way I twist the throttle differently. Most people think to twist your wrist, which you do have to do, but what I started thinking was just like we push left or right to go that direction I push down on my wrist to twist the throttle. Keep your wrist flat and straight when you grab the throttle, and then think about your wrist going down rather than actually twisting. Down is smoother than twisting, in my opinion. You can also sit in your driveway, put the bike in neutral, and practice smooth/steady RPM increases. Go from idle to 2500 and keep it there, then slowly go back down to idle, and increase/ decrease the more comfortable you get. Hope this helps and makes sense!

I’ve been riding for about 3-4 months now. Constantly practicing all of the low speed maneuvers that you recommend (your app). Riding a cb500x (first bike) with full gear and full armor no matter the temperature. I feel very comfortable leaning. I can go full throttle through hard rated roads (MSF course handed out road maps with road difficulties). I’ve been throwing around the idea of upgrading to a liter bike for a while, but I want your opinion. Do you think I should upgrade now or wait until my skills are even better with at least a full season under my belt. Thoughts, questions, concerns? By the way, I’m not trying to be cocky or anything. I just wanted you to know where my skills are at so you can answer my question the best way possible.

So agree with all of this.
I'm such noob its painful. I'm absolutely lacking technique, and so therefore terribly slow in my eyes. Working so hard on working out how to improve and physically assimilating info in a progressive way. I am improving, albeit not as fast as I would like to be.
I care so much more about how safe and able I am than how good I look. I honestly don't look good right now because I'm so tense and afraid of cornering, but that's OK in the short term.. I will find my way and I will do it in a way where everyone stays in one piece, even if slightly delayed in getting from A-B and a little red faced having to pull over and take a breath. Things are not so easy in your 40's compared to your 20's. You have kids and don't heal so well... and you know it!

He was extremely experienced, but he also disagreed with even the curriculum , even sent a brand new rider home for having two fingers over the front brake (something I used to do before that class, but then he was unable to stop when told ). But I’ll tell you this, when we passed and he said “congratulations you are now certified by the state to operate a motorcycle at low speeds in a parking lot” it had impact.

After watching your videos on Counter steering I have been consciously practicing it, but I have a question. I have an ADV bike and spend much of my time on dirt road and or trails. When on loose gravel or sand the wheel wants to self correct when it gets pushed offline but counter steering would seem to create a problem. Since I've started consciously counter steering I am without doubt a safer rider, but now I may be over thinking it on dirt roads'
