As far as I know neither Hillary nor Tenzing ever acknowledged which of them was "first," regarding it as a team accomplishment. We should honor and respect that.

Hillary was first, but there're only photos of Tenzing Norgay at the top of Everest, taken by Edmund Hillary May 29, 1953 !

In another CZcams posting is Sir Edmund on "Omnibus" talking about the achievement. While he and Tensing made the final ascent, Sir Edmund gives credit to the whole team for the success.

According to Wikipedia, Tenzing said that Hillary got there first.

It cannot be done if they don't have each other period. Both of them has equal respect and given honor by their respective countries. Hillary is the first in the summit in the context that he set the first step in the summit thats all their is to it. For both of them it was never a big deal who's first that's the reason Hillary dont even think that he need a picture taken of himself at the summit but instead he took a picture of Tenzing.

Tenzin Norgay`s not a Nepali he is Tibetan.................The truth is when Tenzin Norgay climbed Everest and became 1st climber with Edmund Hillary.......Nepali government gave him citizen of Nepal so that then can say he`s from Nepal. But later Tenzin Norgay he left Nepal and moved to India.....

@@SunilSingh-dc2nu I don't need to, Tenzing himself has stated Hillary summited first as that was their arrangement. It doesn't really matter because both men did something monumental. Hillary was there to perform a feat in the name of exploration, Tenzing was there doing his job. The sherpa climbers could have summited on their own before 53 but didn't have the desire to do so.
