  • It's a bit of an eyebrow-raiser when you think about Richard Spencer, known for his white nationalist views, and then you find out he's got German immigrant roots. It's these little ironies in life that make you stop and think about the stories we tell ourselves and the contradictions we sometimes live with.

My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

May I say this the American Continent was never white, it was brown. Whether from Latin America to Anglo America, it all was populated by Indigenous people. Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, Amazon Indigenous, Cheyenne, Sioux, Tainos, Yanomamis, etc. and the Europeans came and made it white. Now some of them resent the notion of it going back to it's origin.

I didn't finish the video earlier, so I have 1 more comment. Prior to 1965, the immigration policy was geared towards keeping the country majority European. & if I'm not mistaken, the population was around 90% European, or European decent, up until the 70s. You could probably careless what I think, but I'd prefer that America. I think the multiracial America is going to end up with serious problems. I think that's intentional though. It's a little divide & conquer tactic used by those in power. & those in power have big plans for us. But that's another conversation for a different time. Your videos are always interesting. He really shouldn't be worried about either cultural fusion or "mongrelization." Even without non-European immigration, the average skin tone of U.S. citizens would darken within a few thousand years to the coloration of Mediterranean peoples, given the warm climate of North America compared to Europe. And, in one sense, this country is, in fact, not becoming multicultural, but more homogeneous. Social media allows fads, trends, and other modern sensibilities to spread like wildfire, putting pressure on Americans (and not just young people) to conform to a standard of "hip" or "cool." Americans used to speak English relatively formally, and to write the language even more formally. Now our speech patterns seem to mimic, either consciously or unconsciously, the Southern California "dude/dudette" style or the slang vernacular of rap/hip-hop music. Our culture is being corroded, but it's not by immigrants. (Of course, given how traditional Spencer is, he probably hates that too.)

      @krisstarring Před 9 měsíci +9

Mr. Spencer is wrong on so many counts. American culture is definitely not exclusively "white" by any means, especially when it comes down to the food we eat, the music we listen to, and even our most predominate religions who were also not founded by white people. Jazz has been called "the one true American artform," and guess who got that started? I'll give you a hint, they weren't white. Our cuisine is a mix of influences from not just Anglo-Saxon Britain but from Africans, Native Americans, and immigrants from all over the world. And as far as the religion part goes, this still somehow comes as a surprise to people who I guess have never been to the Middle East or remotely know anything about it, Jesus wasn't white. It's so hilarious but tragic at the same time that all these white nationalist Christian identity types espouse the supremacy of "White Christian" values when Jesus Christ and his disciples were all olive skinned Middle Eastern Jews. The cognitive dissonance and the required mental gymnastics that takes is astounding.

@@krisstarringthe theory is rationalized in their minds by saying the 12 tribes of Israel that migrated out of there Levant were White Indo-Europeans who then migrated to the Caucasus and were converting to Christianity along the way. It goes further and claims that specifically Celts and Germanics are the true biblical Jews. It goes a step further than that with also claiming ashkenazi Jews are actually khazarian converts. The funny part of all of this is that it’s really hard to fully disprove them because of the vagueness of where the 12 tribes of Israel went and the sprinkles of truth in the argument (regarding Ashkenazi Jews) and the lack of many sources on where they went.
As for your other point, do you define a thing, be it cuisine, music, or a system as being derivative of that culture? Because cultural diffusion is a real thing, and that could blur the lines on the concepts. My point is that we don’t really say global maritime trade is derivative of Western European culture or that any country printing the newspapers is appropriating German culture. It depends on how you define it, and over time the cultural movement can become adopted en masse

Correct and you can see a similar thing in South Africa where there was apartheid, and now that same apartheid has reversed into discrimination against the white Dutch. Because the reality of life is that there is always going to be an upper class that runs the lower classes whether its racial, class status or ethnical in some way. Whites did not start the slave trade it was the Arabs and local African tribes that did, in reality slavery has always existed but we are talking about modern the slave trade of course, whites only profited form it later on. That's the sad and unfortunate state of human nature.

They were talking abt border immigration issues even though as fed workers we are not to talk abt politics. They also claim to be Christians. The tone they used was not kind. I angrily yelled at them "well, I am an immigrant". Some of my family came here from the Channel Islands as French Huguenot in the late 1600s. Some from Bremen Germany like Spencer in 1700s & found in Revolutionary War. We are mostly English, Welch and Scottish according to Dna and paper trail. I asked them as I left the lunchroom. "What would Jesus do?" I also told them abt my friend from Eritrea who fled thru Sudan as a teenager abt 45 yrs ago. Baby sister & brother shot & killed. Mother shot but survived to make their way here. Father had arrived 2 yrs earlier. My friends' daughters now college educated. A good family, made their American dream.

Hello DanielIe, I just wrote a long comment about Spencer's illogical and incorrect points, but I lost the comment. Here is a small recap. It is quite hilarious when you think about it. What is scary is that Spencer has so many acolytes. Just think about the founders Apple, and Google. Steve Jobs was of Syrian descent and Sergey Brin was of Russian descent. Many of the richest billionaire entrepreneurs are from immigrant families. Elon Musk was born in South Africa. These people have made huge contributions to the national GDP due to commerce and technology. Not to mention all the scientists who worked on the Manhattan project. There were huge contributions made by the unpaid labor of the enslaved people who built the American South. Railroads were built by huge numbers of Asian workers. Going back in early American history, black people have been here for at least 400 years. These are just a few examples of immigrant contributions. This country would not exist if not for immigrants. Thank you for commenting on Richard Spencer's illogical beliefs.

I had an ancestor who came over from Bremen around 1850 1851. We researched what was happening at this time that could’ve possibly compelled him to immigrate. It was not long after the 1848 revolutions, there was a lot of political unrest, economic depression, and overall it was not an easy time to be in Europe. Conditions that we see in a lot of countries that people are immigrating out of today.
We also did the same thing for family members who immigrated over from Ireland at various times , Italy, and other German states. Every time we found that there were severe problems in their home country.
I really think this shows that when people talk about my family is from this place in Europe, that they have no idea what actually was happening in that country at that time. People seem to just assume that Europe has always been this Idealic prosperous continent, and nothing can be farther from the truth.
Also, would like to point out that a great many advancements in science, medicine, and architecture have come out of plenty of non-white places. It makes me so angry and sad to hear people like this guy spout his hatred.

His argument is very weak. The United States is an immigrant country; indigenous populations arriving much earlier than many and that doesn't just include North America, but South and Central America. Later migrations of largely Anglo-Protestant Europeans in North America, Africans forced to the Americas (Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade), then other European populations. But even before North America now the United States was settled, the Caribbean and South America was settled about 500 years before establishing the United States and largely by Southern Europe, Spain. Right, does he know how many other Europeans who followered who weren't classified as white? As it seems Europeans didn't follow the white United States idealogy in the same manner, in that case some Southern Europeans wouldn't be considered to have white skin, but Europeans identify with the country of origins. White in America is a strange construct that several European groups couldn't even check the box for. Truly a complex topic. "America" should not be used in reference to these united States, in this context. This guest isn't knowledgable on this subject and that's unsurprising. "tradition" can be useful but isn't sacred and when someone wants to retain/return to traditions the motives should be teased out to know if there's wisdom in it. I don’t identify as “white,” though I am of Slavic, German, and Ulster-Scott, Catholic and Protestant, discendency. The idea of the United States was to ultimately give people the ability to live peacefully with one another, despite our differences. Mass immigration does present its own set of challenges.

I think he means European serfs and religious groups ran onto ships, usually because they were being chased out by someone, and were hoping to win freedom in America. Most of them died. However, some Europeans made it, survived, and started colonies. They were probably all colors, not all white. But it’s okay to say mostly Europeans. That is not a racist statement.

I think you one-upped Mr. Spencer on that point, but I think his assertion that this country is not just a nation of immigrants is correct. An immigrant travels from one country to another, but the United States were formed from people who traveled from one place to another, and then formed their own country. That is categorically different from being an immigrant.
Also, I don't think Mr. Spencer is inconsistent by having German immigrant ancestry and advocating for a white America. His problem with legal immigration is the origin of the people immigrating.

These Chinese and Korean settlers formed the ethnogenesis of Japan and created a wonderful nation - I'm sure you can see the comparison I'm making here. Thanks for this posting, Danielle. The questions in my mind are less related to the person Richard Spencer or others with similar narratives and more about how people who "other" their brothers and sisters get traction with their followers. It is a complicated situation that must take into account an entire economic strata in America for whom access to a fair living wage, adequate social services and a quality of life ("the American Dream") has been blocked. There is a strong correlation between nationalism and those who have fallen into this group. They are often so disenfranchised that they forget who they are and where they and their families came from and become vulnerable to the belief that the "other" is the problem and not the loss of democratic ideals and opportunities. Anyone providing them such a reductive explanation complete with targets for their anger can easily get their attention and loyalty. The United Nations website has more info on this. We can change it if we stop falling prey to these negative nationalist narratives and return to our democratic roots. Of course, the sooner the better else we suffer history repeating the lessons of Germany in the early 1900's. We need to fix equity in America one day, one choice and one vote at a time. 😊👍🏼☮️

Try taking your WAV file and using a limiter on it (-6 dB and click "yes" to "apply make-up gain"). This should even out the sound. I'd also recommend doing some "limiting" for solo-voiced videos to give your own voice more presence and "pop" (-3 dB might work for solo voice). As for Spencer, virtually all of what he says was said by Pat Buchanan already, except Buchanan had a better handle on history.

I'm mixed race and I have never had a problem acknowledging White peoples' pivotal role in shaping the West. There are five continents. There are four traditional races of people. Each of these races have a continent they can say belongs to them. Africa-Blacks, Europe-Whites, Far East- Asian and the Indo races are spread over Latin America and Southeast Asia, India, Pakistan etc. And this is not a generalization. I believe this is a natural order ordained by God.

Everyone, the Enslaved, the Natives, & Immigrants have all made their contributions in some way. What has this guy done? Except go against the very reason he gets to beneifit, his family already paved his way. This guy wouldnt make it one day on the frontier! This has all got to be a joke...has to be

Originally white was only a political title for the English elites, so in this respect he is correct. But in light of the changing demographics and in an effort to maintain power, elites have begun diversifying who falls under that political category, which leaves less room for idiots like him. This is what he is afraid of.

He seems to be a person with the position of wanting to go back to pre 1950's America, before anyone other than people who "looked" like him had any rights. And the problem is... people who "looked like him" Also, faced many challenges in this country... so he is arguing, for the sanctification of "convenient whiteness" i.e. some close enough association people feel they can get behind.. to bring us back to "TV" 1950's whiteness... or traditional suburban whiteness. imo.

So, a person who identifies as white and who is not a white supremacist looks down on immigrants, ignores his own family history, and upholds colonization? He does know what comes with colonization, right? So the erasure of one's ancestral legacies, stories, and traditions is what he upholds and values, and his idea of white identity is preferable. Did I get that right?
My mother ALWAYS stressed knowing where I came from. My family tree branches across several countries from 5 continents (and the Oceanic region). Most of the names we have are from the enslaved Africans and Europeans. The rest I know of because of ancestral knowledge/Dream Knowledge/Dream Narratives that have been passed down to me (and some to my mother). It's the topic of my thesis.
I don't care what anyone wants to call themselves, but if you don't know where you come from, you end up fighting a fight (or even starting one) that will only cause more pain and trauma to no end.

You are 100% right, it is important to know, learn, and discover you family history and roots. I do not like this person at all given that I would of pushed back by this idea that white=citizenship and based on his skin color he is a true citizen, but not the rest of us (Puerto Ricans were made citizens via the Jones Act of 1917). This reminds me of readings we've be doing in my Latina/o course on the notion of citizenship and the ongoing "illegality" and unwanted Latinos face in the U.S, even as a citizen.
He doesn't know because he chooses not to know or cherry picks his points. He wnats an ethno state for just white people in the U.S.
Love the work you do and i might need to save some of your videos for when I start teaching again because you raise such good discussion I think my students need in my courses!

Thank you dear for your story and your conviction to tell your truth. Keep doing the good work you’re doing. Don’t stop . l the haters who don’t want to know the truth. I know in my heart consciously and spiritually, GOD wants us to continue too work together as the human race as long as it takes for the grater and all that is good , not evil . R. Spencer, his organization and other racist groups will not make America into a separate authoritarian state as he would like. No ,America has problems but we’re not going to let that happen. We’re not going backwards we’re going forwards positively.
    GOD IS WATCHING.🙏🏽

Very fair and good analysis, thank you. A pretty strong quote in support of your argument comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson's journal per Professor Nell Irvin Painter (formerly of Princeton University), where he refers to Germans, along with Irish and Blacks as a "guano" race that would fertilize the soil of America for the Saxon race (what he called the English/North American descendants of the English) in her book "The History of White People, 2010, page 188. I wonder what how Spencer would react to it.
Also have you ever considered having guests on your show? If so Dr. Painter might be a good one, since she has also studied both North American concepts "whiteness" and "blackness" in her career. Think it might be quite interesting.
Thanks again and for all your good work :)
