I was thinking this too,
I guess it's in cycles,
Much like in football/soccer where Barcelona, Manchester United dominated for a bit until age caught up.
It's crazy what they achieved. Even discounting the championships, Hooker has put on some incredible fights and Kai has shown great potential too.
I mean, CKB is still a team of studs with over a dozen belts between them. MMA is different now, the game moves fast and the belts change owners
Right, been quite the skid lately.
I was shocked how Alex didn't immediately go for calf kicks since Illia is so vulnerable for them, I was sure he'd destroy Illia's lead leg in the first 3 rounds, seems like a very amateurish tactical error
I actually think Max matches up better against Ilia than Volk does. Constant forward pressure, high volume, better chin. That said, who knows how Max is gonna look when it's all said and done against Gaethje. 2024 could very well be the end of the Max & Volk era at 145
Y’all are wild. I’m pretty sure Ilia is too fast for max… yair was almost too fast for max, and ilia is as quick, with better technique and better power. He was quick to catch volk. If you don’t think he can also catch max, who’s over a decade into his ufc career, you wild
@@tonyphelps1173i mean to be fair all he said was its a better matchup than volk was which i agree tbh
@@tonyphelps1173
Dude literally arguing against points I never even made lol
Max is in his prime he’s only 32
@@thelobster7277 max is 32 wearing the damage of a 52 year old bar fighter
UFC needs to do away with immediate rematches
Or establish criteria. It's all up to what Dana wants.
its business man. you wont change that. plenty of guys dont get immediates lol
Bro, if Volks doesn’t deserve an immediate rematch, who does?! That’s crazy talk
@@toziassmitt none of them do. Unless some kind of egregious judging or reffing error. I been saying this long time though. Just my opinion. Division would move along better.
@@Richard-G nah you crazy. That’s too much. Volk is the FW GOAT
Volk had the same strategy as Izzy in the first Peirara fight: keep distance and if you get stuck against the fence, clinch. They both lost the same way: attempting to clinch and catching a hook over the top. They attempted the same strategy and got the same results against a power puncher.
Also: when Izzy got stung against Strickland.
@@p_warwick5092what are you idiots talking about ? Is got dropped agjanst Strickland when he threw a limbo hook with his eyes closed and Strickland threw a straight right down the pipe inside of the hook ..the fuck are you guys talking about looking to clinch literally nobody was looking to clinch you dorks just make things up and dudes who know even less then you actually believe it’s what happened cuz they can’t tell the difference …you know what a clinch is right ? Throwing your hands at somebody isn’t a clinch ya clowns stop playing pretend in CZcams comments it’s embarrassing
Zuck looks more and more like a robot the more I see him.
Data 😂
Really? I thought this empathised him. His walking out and being awkward, not knowing what to do with his hands, that’s about the most relatable he’s ever been lol
@@toziassmitt it’s not relatable because he’s with some poorly paid guys who give each other brain damage for pittance, he’s paid no dues and there isn’t any wealth transfer or compensation for the fighters having that doofus around. It’s almost like Ancient Rome in a way.
You're invincible until you are not. I think that should be celebrated rather than celebrating those who didn't pass the baton to the next generation. Good for Volk.
I concur .
MMA is so unforgiving and also exciting because of this .
You can lose your status in a split second .
Volk has accomplished so much in his career and is one of the best .
Ilia is a lethal beast and I can’t wait to see his run in the division.
Good shout
He’s already talking about coming back 😮 that man seriously needs to take a break. His brain must be scrambled
If Volk is done at high level I'll never forget becoming a fan of Islam facing Islam that first time and then going back and watching his run and being astonished at Max 3, Ortega and the sub escapes, Yair...et al. He has been one of the best to do it and should be in the HoF and we should all learn from him.
When Luke first said Perriera V Jamal Hill, I was like "Meh" but it definitely has potential to be a crazy banger that ends violently
Hill tore his Achilles from being fat like half a year ago
hill havent fought in ages, ring rust is a thing. i dont think he'll keep up with pereira's speed and for damn sure won't be able check those calf kicks
It’s a beautiful co-main
It has zero potential. He's rushing from a serious injury for a UFC 300 payday and he's likely being sent to hell via a stone giants fists
It’s a good fight, but it’s just not a UFC 300 hype fight
"One person said X so I'm going to lecture my entire audience on this as if they all believe that."
Stop treating your viewers like idiots, Luke.
I can’t watch this guy anymore. Ariel is a weasel. Trying to find some mma content that’s good and watchable
@@HS-oh8xhcoach zahabi has good takes but he's not regular
@HS-oh8xh yea he is not enjoyable.
Thick skin will help Luke. Dont get so sensitive when people disagree, it’s natural.
Forrest Griffin entering fights to Dropkick Murphys “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” is pretty iconic too.
I applied Luke's "over 35" rule to a parlay on the Merab and Toporia fights and won a nice chunk of change. Thanks, guys! 😊
Getting knocked out with a head kick in October and then fighting in February isn’t smart. The fight played out as expected for me, I’m a massive Volk fan but I knew from when it announced his punch resistance wasn’t going to be there. There’s a reason fighters take 6 months to a year off with no sparring to let their brain heal. He must’ve been sparring again in December-January after getting KO’d in October.
I think that punch would have slept him regardless but yeah not a smart move by volk
@@brycetheshredder I do agree with you mate theres a very good chance that exact shot would’ve slept him anyway, I just think if you have doubts in your chin your decision making etc is going to be different also.
Mental illness is a mf
@@NxD42yeah im sure he was a bit more cautious which made him get backed up to the cage easier
I don’t really agree about the time frame. Volk did NOT get KOd vs Islam. He got TKOd. He never went out cold, he was dazed but had consciousness the whole time
So I don’t think it affects punch resistance the same way as when a guy gets put completely out. Guys get TKOd pretty often, and it doesn’t necessarily derail their career
Merabs gas tank and suffocating pressure is CRAZY

At 12:53 is he talking about Ortega's package because Ortega always wears a comically oversized cup? 💀
Paquete in Spanish slang means something like 'bum', but your interpretation is funnier
Not sure, but is prob why BC is so fond of him
It was the one fight I thought?
Luke geeking out over Spanish of any kind is always endearing to my soul as a former Spanish teacher
The standards have lowered for Spanish teachers
To give some context for American fans who might not appreciate the people showing Ilia support - dude had arguably one of the best Tennis players of all time (Nadal), the best Spanish and future prospect in Tennis (World Number 2, Carlos Alcaraz), SEVERAL Spanish footballers literally ranked 90+ in any game you'll find them in, the amount of support he has in Spain rivals Cedric Doumbe in France and probably surpasses it several times over. If UFC can hold an event in Spain, the audience will be about as star-studded as is humanly possible.
This one hurts.
Feel so bad for Volk.
Great win. Well deserved.
Just hurt for Volk man.
i kept saying he's turning around too quickly after a vicious head kick KO..

Your/that take on Merab... Thank You, brother, it's pathetic the difference 'tween the love he gets in comparison to the love he really deserves! 💯
Great analysis Luke. Really passionate and detailed.
Thank you. Excellent content.
As soon is Ilia walked out to Antonio Banderas, I knew it was over for Volk

that shit was so cold
I’m surprised Luke didn’t blow his mic whilst talking about Tuporia
Smugness is not an endearing attribute Luke.
Good Episode, Luke.
A few points I don't agree with, but good to see this.
Topuria’s head movement was fantastic. It almost looked as if he was going to shoot then would come up top with a missle
That 35 and over is the real goat of mma, undefeated, dominant over the best divisions in mma
This was sad because volks looked really good but this was too soon, the whole build up to the fight he'd been saying that it wasn't too soon and ofc it was, islam is not known for his KOs and ilia is, so...
Congrats to ilia this was inevitable
luke making the sounds before he appeared for the first time, plus knowing that he couldnt resist hahhahaah
I'm 100% in for Strickland vs. Whitacre first time I even thought of it but yes make it happen @ufc
😂 white acre
Luke, fully agree that by the time they get the leverage from Dana, they're otw down. Remember Volk said he only took the Islam short notice fight because he was promised a larger contract in return. Volk has now been koed twice in a row at 35. So no good choices. Get an immediate rematch without recovery and get koed again. OR sit out and recover and try another run at 36..
The 35 year old rule also applies to point guards in the NBA and Running Backs in the NFL.
Luke literally started watching soccer a couple years ago but pretends like he’s been a lifelong fan
What’s your point?
11:49 Huge Respect for pointing that out Luke, instant fan, subscribed 💪🏻🇬🇪
Imagine paying $1,000 for nosebleeds at UFC 300 expecting a once in a lifetime card and getting a regular average PPV main event 😭😭
I just don’t know what people thought was going to happen. There are only so many fighters availble and it pretty much had to be a championship fight so it was either alex or leon which are both average ppv fights no matter who you match them up with. Except maybe an izzy rematch at 205 with alex but i think we all knew that wasn’t going to happen.

One of the funniest things is, Luke’s complete inability to not engage every time someone calls it a curse lol. I’m convinced that nobody is saying curse on ironically, at least as far as Luke’s live chats, etc.
At this point calling out Connor is very cringe
Thanks Luke.
Why is Luke acting like he’s some analytical genius for picking Topuria to win? The odds at every Sportsbook had this fight as basically a pick ‘em.
Luke lost in OK bet but now he wants to act like he’s some genius for getting one right.
I do think you should change the intro Luke, but as always nice analysis
I thought so too,
Felt a bit angry and disappointing,
Here for the analysis
Volkswagen should not have been fighting so soon after his knock out
Luke you are the most entertaining analyst in the game
He’s the most technical by far, but entertaining let’s come down now. He’s my favorite
As a dumb American that works for a super passionate Mexican, I got chills when homie timed his walkout to that song. I would have never heard that song if I didn’t work for the G that I do, but we’ve hired (and I’ve randomly got to film) mariachis playing that song. The response among Chicago Mexicans is a sight to behold.
NO IMMEDIATE REMATCH Luke, cmon man! He got sparked
Poatan vs Hill will be violent and it won’t go the distance for sure!
35:55 lukes reaction to pierera v hill, not too dissimilar from mine 😆 still stoked 💪🏽
Great roundup! Loved the super smug opening lol, had me in stitches. It was worth being on the wrong side just for that - step forward and take a bow!
Ilia had a clean and decisive win, even if a rematch is on the cards I dont think its in Volks best interest. He really needs to rest up and re-evaluate.
"Execute Rule of 35" graphic - nice
Great insightful and sobering reality that Luke has shed light on here sad but true
Keep an eye out for Navajo Stirling from CKB, phenomenal talent!
Dern is cheeked up!! 🎉
I actually thought in UFC rules, Geoff Neal won rounds 1 & 2 and could have been given the win, but if we use old Pride judging style Ian Garry overall did the better work and won the fight. UFC needs to change their judging. It's way too easy to have a couple close rounds decide fights
There is no such thing as “ufc rules” the commission makes the rules. Thats why one championship only went to the U.S. in colorado cause they were the only ones willing to let them use different judging/rules than the standard ones
Geoff blew it wasting time trying to clinch on the fence. Literally did nothing with it. Should’ve kept trying to find Garry’s chin with those big shots.
Agreed. So very obvious: talking and fighting are different things.
That stat is still undefeated
Settle down there Luke you pick the guy with the tightest boxing in the sport good job at seeing that coming but at the other hand you’re a pretty smart guy good about
could listen to luke talk about Rob for hours
In most sports athletes are getting to the big leagues between 19-22 so when they become stars it’s in mid to late twenties and they have several years in their prime. MMA is not like that it takes longer.
Dern is horrific and Lemos has negative fight iq
It's all good super donk Luke Thomas, I said the samething on my videos about Ilia Topuria, and got similar reactions😄🤙
“This is to all of the fuckos…”
1:14:30 how do you figure that DJ win over Martins doesn’t qualify? 🤣 It absolutely does qualify as being over 35 winking a title fight.
Sean better enjoy that 35 belt cause merab is going to run that string bean over.
Anthony Hernandez definitely on the juice cause he's an animal 😮💨
I’m surprised by how Thomas knows about the Spanish entertainment sports world. Ilia did that. And wonder who can even compete with him. Dangerous strikes
UFC 298 was so fun to watch, i picked 3/5 main card fights wrong lol but they were all good fights. UFC 300 main is insanly disappointing to me but the card will be great and the summer cards should be lit too. Bobby Knucks is fucking back!

@12:56 Tony Montana vibes this dude is a real gangster
I saw a youtube poll that had Volk 75% to win. I think his antics at the Presser had people voting with their funny bone more than their brains
Or people just wanted him to win. When its a percieved close skill matchup people just go with the fighter they like more. Also ilia was being so cocky people wanted to see him lose
@@brycetheshredder true. it's often emotional rather than rational
It’s simply a reflection of their level of fame. Many more fans know of Volk, and he is more proven, known to win more, been a main event fighter for years

I love Volk - but I hope we don't see him at FW again. Dude could easily beat other top LW contenders and it's much less of a weight-cut for him at his age. This was a very "closed book" kind of finish and I really don't need to see Volk become 0 - 3 with another loss vs Topuria to see him move up and have some fun ass fights vs people with Chandler / Porier etc at LW.
That 35 and over stat is insane. The reason I bet on topuria and merab
Merab wasn't in a title fight
What makes it even crazier to me is that tyron is the only guy to beat it lmao

we should allow TRT
For me, is bit surprising, but certainly not shocking (at Volkswagen age, rebounding off that loss etc)…
However, Topiria’s attitude seemed too forward and put on, pre fight to me ie could have indicated a rude awakening eg Costa vs Izzy..
He did look a bit limited to me, goin in, if dangerous of course- I thought a reasonably near peak Volk would be able to navigate around him, raid, and either break down late, or win a decision..
Obv not case, and do recognise that cessation of Volk’s prime is almost certainly now over
MVP autocorrect ☺😮
Ilia : I'm not Max's package.
Waiting for technical difficulties
Derek clearly has got to go after that scorecard on the Garry fight
"Ortega's package" omg I'm dead. Luke, we use "paquete" in Spain same way as u ways would "bum"
The Jon Jones, Max Holloways, GSPs, Khabib/Islams of this world are rare. Most don’t achieve their fame until they’re in their 30s, right as their prime is ending
I think max would be a nightmare matchup for Topuria simply because he’s still young and has one of the best chins that I’ve ever seen and never lets anyone else outpressure him. I can see max just taking bombs in the first round and continuining to walking the dude down to victory
Cejudo and Volk looked old.
I laughed out loud when you reminded everyone about the Paddy fight talks.
Alex is a global treasure and all that but he should never have underestimated Islam no matter how much they paid him for the rematch, and Islam should have gotten much more credit even for winning the first fight. It is what it is now. Costa looked really good making his comeback. Cejudo's fight IQ and Olympic wrestling for MMA is extremely overrated in my opinion. Literally only made adjustments in the Marlon fight and the rest were either controversial stuff or declined opponents...
@@Tobe-4747 Cejudo looked slower than he was a few years ago, and even looked faster against Sterling. I agree, he shouldn't have retired if the plan was to come back again, especially against younger contenders.
Flags at half mast 🇦🇺
Costa vs Hermansson, maybe?
Rematch is always bad statistically for fights / situations like this. Volk would lose, sadly.

Algo comment 😎Cheers Luke 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
That 35 and over championship fight stat begs one question. Just how bad is Darren Till?
MMA fandom is very cyclical, and you can pretty much track the boom-bust cycle with when dominant fighters start to lose. Most people only last around 3-5 years, or about as long as a fighter's prime

Luke. “Paquete” is Spanish slang for a fake, not the literal translation of “package”. He basically said Brian Ortega is just a lie covered by a shiny package (all looks, no skills).
VOLK looked great especially with the in and out movement and jabbing topurias nose off.
He fucked up attempting to engage in close range against the cage with a combination power striker (not volks strong point) aaaaaaaand he got clipped.
I think he could win a rematch with some correction
