I was able to replace my 2009 mini radio with the help of this video, the step by step instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us : )
You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. My radio and sound system stopped working and I asked Mini dealer to fix it they said it will cost you $1500, so I decided to fix myself. I ordered a preowned radio and sound controller from EBay for 50 bucks and installed it myself following your video. Thanks you for the video
wow, just finished doing this.... one of the hardest mods you'll ever do for such a small screen to be installed haha. learned a lot, had a lot of fun and would never have been able to do it without this, Thank you my man.
I hate when you take your time and understand everything you need to do, make sure everything works, and button it all up and enjoy you labor.. only to figure out you forgot something. Haha. Just the way things go sometimes~ Great video!
That's the most comprehensive DIY video I think I've seen. I have a 2009 Clubman who's factory stereo has gone belly-up. You gave me the route in to get it done. Nice job!
That was THE BEST and most informative VT I have seen on You tube, I was going to attempt this on my Mini Cooper but it is far too much for me.. so complicated ..
It’s quite simple. All it is, is patience. It seems easy when he does it but when you get hands on, things start getting confusing but if you are patient it becomes easy and understandable. I’m going to do this on my mini but I am also going to either paint or replace all of the old switches cause they ugly!
THX! Your video helped me to break down my 2009 Mini S & saved me big bucks on changing out my non working radio. Only spent $100 on a used one. I changed out the 3 circuit boards & main unit with my existing good clean front parts. Luckily I didn't have to get it reprogrammed. (it's so important to buy the right compatible unit) It was a long process but it was well worth it all! After 5 longs months I finally got a working radio again!
Great video. I followed this as I removed the pieces. Couldn't have replaced my radio without this video. Thank you so much. Even though my Mini is a 2013 it was still the same. I even for the "secret compartment" that I didn't know I had. I knew some mini's had them and some didn't. I just figured mine didn't. Win, win.
Thanks for posting this. I actually have an issue with my speed-o and wondered what it would entail to fix it. My mechanic said the whole dash would have to come apart. Now I know
Dude I have to say that your video to remove audio helped me a lot today!!! that's a great job you did here. I just wanna thank you from France for this great help for me today.
Hi , Excellent video! Very specific, but I would go crazy removing so many screws. I have a 2008 Mini Cooper and they did this same job for me where they install radios. If I had seen your video before, maybe I would have done it. Not all of us have the same ability .
My friend is a heart surgeon and he’s also upgraded his mini head unit and I can confirm he says it’s definitely more of a chore fitting the radio than it is performing open heart surgery
Woah buddy that is a hardcore install. Much more extensive than I expected and that was before you had to pull the center console out lol. As much as I'd love to switch over to full bluetooth I think I'll have to wait until my stereo dies lol. Great video!
I have do the same to my R56 2009 S, now that is ben there for some time, I realized that I should put some glue or sealant on the kit that cover where the radios controls used to be, because now I have a lot of dust inside the speedometer, Great job, I wish I was so handy like you!
i fitted a stereo in that secret compartment, i stilll had to take it all apart to wire in the plugs but afterwards any future upgrades were easy. and better still it kept the dash standard. nice to see new vids dino.
For the record, you can do everything from the BC buttton on the stalk as you can with the speedo display. You can reset the trip and gas and mph and even set the clock. You can reset all your service intervals and all that too. It shows you how in your owners manual
Dude, thank you for the video. I am facing the specter of doing this very thing. Can't thank you enough for showing and explaining the work you did - like explaining how to solve the Rubik's Cube. Getting some t-shirts from your site to support your channel!!! Wow. . . . woww!!!
I've been considering updating the stereo in my 2010 Clubman. Have you noticed any hiccups since you did your swap? Other than the computer settings you could reach with the stock stereo, have you had any issues getting into and changing settings via the turn signal stalk? Is there anything else I should expect after performing a stereo swap of my own?
Just did some research, for those who also wants to know. Dash Kit: Metra 99-9309, Chime: LC-BMRC-01 (possible AXXESS brand in the video), Steering wheel control: AXXESS ASWC-1.
I use to install premium packaging selections for Mitsubishi.. and this audio install makes that work seem to be way easier than I remembered. Hopefully this video will help me when I tackle mine! 😂😅
I'm totally planning to do this also, does anyone have a good information-source for the cables used and other video's about switching the panel? Thanks!
you can also reset the trip computer stuff by holding down the stalk button while it's displaying the readout you want to reset, it's a standard BMW trip computer.
Hi just to let you know you can reset the trip computer through the rev counter by holding the BC button in while you are on the selected bit of the menu i.e. mpg
That "vent" you used for your mic is where the factory multi-directional microphone is installed with the upgraded HK audio system. So in essence you used it for what it's meant to be used for :-) I have the HK audio in my 2012 MCS and as much as it is a nice factory system...it's lacking as well (coming from years of custom audio installs and high quality components spoils you!)
I’m looking at buying a R56 Cooper S for the summer here in the UK. Great video, hope to get a similar kit for the new car as I’ve heard the stereos aren’t great from factory.
I installed the Pioneer AppRadio 4 in 2014 into my 2011 S Convertible. Same kit, but I trimmed and mounted the original stock CD player (with 150 MP3s on a "permanently" inserted CD) behind the speedo to retain the controls and display in the speedo.
First off, thanks. Simple with the descriptions and clear. I was able to do the same thing at the same time with little pausing or skipping. Very good video. Now, I'm trying to diagnose a button issue. Those selection buttons for the radio, some work and some don't. Primarily the middle guys. So I figure there's some debris between the plastic button/membrane/switch. I got to the point of removing the speedometer before other things pulled me away. Question is: does that sound like the right thought process? Can you get into the interior that deep? Or do I just need to search for a new set of buttons or speedometer? Any insight is appreciated.
Fantastic detail on the disassembly and assembly. Props on a very well done video! Thank you for sharing. The part at the end where you realized you forgot the XM radio gave me a good laugh haha Side note...Holy FU*K that is an extremely large amount of work to do the deck haha
Uses all metal tools to disassemble plastic dash parts.... Lays down a towel to protect his workbench.... Brilliant! Great info but the tools (while effective) were cringe-worthy to see being used/in action. I know it was a 9 year old car at the time the video was published but even then I think a good set of nylon pry tools were about $15. Major testament to the scratch resistant to those Mini plastics.... Again, not being a hater here - still probably the best video on the topic I've seen!
I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S with the navigation package. I'm planning on installing a double din Android stereo. This video will be a great reference tool from me. I'll have to purchase a non-navigation system speedometer for my install. Other than that, it is similar to what you did here. Thanks!
I do have a question. It is said some of These minis have an amplifier that needs to be bypassed. However, yours seems to work fine. Are you having problems with the audio output?
Great video. Thank you for making it. My only comment would be that it instead of routing the microphone cable through the access hole on the side of the dash as you did it would probably be easier to run it all the way down to below the dash. I believe that would allow the cable to be completely hidden in the door jam tucked under the rubber molding. Regards,
Great video! I spoke to an installer who said that I might have an amp driving my speakers. Did you have to wire for an existing amp? Apparently the Minis that came with the Harman Kardon sound system had a separate amp. my '08 has two door speakers and I am thinking it might be using an amp as a crossover?.
Hey, Dino! Long time fan. So I just bought a R56 MINI and I'd really like to replace the radio, much like this. I'd prefer to keep the computer controls, but it looks like that may not be possible. My question is, have you run into any issues after removing the controls on the front? I hear it's pretty integrated into the MINI computer and can cause some electrical gremlins. If you haven't had any problems with it in the last year, then I guess there's nothing stopping me from just ripping the sucker out!
During your install you plugged the factory Aux plug from factory wiring harness back in its location then you plugged it into the back of your aftermarket radio. While doing this you said you “made” the patch cable? How did you do this in order to retain factory plug on one end and 3.5 jack on other end that plugs into radio? Thank you in advance for any response. I am only swapping to an aftermarket radio in my Cooper because the aux button on the factory radio does not show up as an option even though it has the factory aux port installed on bottom of radio panel right next to that cover that has to be cut down next to the aux port. It is weird that mine has the factory installed aux port and factory wiring going from it up to and plugged into the factory radio (ran through the factory loom even). Not sure why my aux does not show under “mode” button on radio.
Hi Dino, did you ever find or install a OBD gauge or led readout for this set up on the radio setup? I also live in NC and doing work on my wife's Mini.
When I removed my console and put the Metra kit in, I have a gap between the gear-shift console and the dash that's showing bare metal and wires. How did you cover that up?
Hi Dean, I have a question for you. The steering wheel control connections...Sigh. I followed the instructions that came with the product. It said to hook up the brown wire for a kenwood headunit, red, yellow, and black. After it was all done and installed I got a green light on the box and no controls. Not having the volume knob is annoying enough but now I dont have my steering wheel controls. Any info on how to get this to work?? thanks -Kevin
I may have missed it in the video - how much of that small plastic piece did you have to trim off so the dash kit could drop down into the right place? Also what did you use to cut it?
Is there a similar kit but for the R53 Motor Mini Cooper 2006 S? Also is there a interface to convert the radio connector into the Mini Cooper one in order not to cut cables?
Before watching the video I thought you were going to take out the iconic speedometer there but you didn't and I was gonna rip you a new. Very nice good choice with everything as well.
so i have a 2012 Mini Countryman. My dash is really close to yours but it does differ a bit. I've looked on Ebay and they have these kits that they say will fit mine. But the dash kit looks more like yours than mine. Does the set of buttons that have the "Sport Mode" & "Driving Light & "Traction Control" switches come off separate than the new faceplate you put on. I couldn't quite see at the end of the video if it's the same.
What was your solution for the Sirius XM antenna? Does it tie into your existing antenna or did you use the one that came with the Sirius XM tuner. My car already had XM on the stock radio so I am trying to avoid installing another antenna.
OMG what a nightmare, how the hell do they put these cars together😊. Good video thanks, you've put me off swapping my centre console to a sat nav console!
That was incredible. I have a 2007 mini cooper just like yours. I would pay you to do mine. But I am sure you would hate to go through all that hassle again.
I wonder if you can help me. I'm about to buy a Mini Cooper 2013. I can not stand Bluetooth.... It gives me such headaches. I'm wondering if you know if I can " Disable " it? I can't find any videos on it.... I found " Enable " but not the other way around. Anything you can help me before I purchase it would be grateful. THANK YOU !!!
You said tab, then Philips, then Torx everywhere else, but you went straight from popping the first tabs to the T20 driver. Error in the initial summary?
I was able to replace my 2009 mini radio with the help of this video, the step by step instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us : )
Where did you buy the kit from I can't seem to find one for my 09
You really deserve a big like from my side because you saved me $1450. My radio and sound system stopped working and I asked Mini dealer to fix it they said it will cost you $1500, so I decided to fix myself. I ordered a preowned radio and sound controller from EBay for 50 bucks and installed it myself following your video. Thanks you for the video
Only video on CZcams that actually helps on removal of stereo. THANKS GREAT VIDEO
wow, just finished doing this.... one of the hardest mods you'll ever do for such a small screen to be installed haha. learned a lot, had a lot of fun and would never have been able to do it without this, Thank you my man.
Nice work!
I hate when you take your time and understand everything you need to do, make sure everything works, and button it all up and enjoy you labor.. only to figure out you forgot something. Haha. Just the way things go sometimes~ Great video!
I usually laugh at meself! :)
He should've tested the XM radio module during the dry run, that's the whole purpose of the dry run
That's the most comprehensive DIY video I think I've seen. I have a 2009 Clubman who's factory stereo has gone belly-up. You gave me the route in to get it done. Nice job!
Yup. My '09 R56 Cooper S stereo shat itself 2 years ago. Loathed to fix it. Mini's are nothing but trouble.
I miss older cars where you could have a stereo out in a matter of a couple minutes...but I guess that's why stereos used to be stolen so frequently.
A lot of people can install it but not a lot of people can explain and make a nice video. Amazing video Thanks !
He makes it look easy. I have to run rca cables to 2 amps. So I have a lot more than he’s doing. Subwoofer and a pair are 6x9s.
It really wasn't too bad. This video helps greatly. Just take you time.
Hi, I have just had to remove my CD Boost CD from a 2013 R57 Cooper. Your video was very, very helpful and informative. Thanks.
THX! Your video helped me to break down my 2009 Mini S & saved me big bucks on changing out my non working radio. Only spent $100 on a used one. My mechanic said the whole dash would have to come apart.
Now I know
Just Installed a New Sony CarPlay Stereo to my Mini Cooper Coupe 2013, thanks to this video. Kudos for the awesome Job!
Hi!! Question where do you connect the 96" yellow cable?
Dude I have to say that your video to remove audio helped me a lot today!!! that's a great job you did here. I just wanna thank you from France for this great help for me today.
I actually felt a pit in my stomach when you said you forgot to install the SXM unit. oh man, I feel for you!!.
Hi , Excellent video! Very specific, but I would go crazy removing so many screws. I have a 2008 Mini Cooper and they did this same job for me where they install radios. If I had seen your video before, maybe I would have done it. Not all of us have the same ability .
Nearly all the screws are the same. Only two are different.
Im pretty sure open heart surgery is easier 😂
LOL
It really wasn't too bad. This video helps greatly. Just take your time.
My friend is a heart surgeon and he’s also upgraded his mini head unit and I can confirm he says it’s definitely more of a chore fitting the radio than it is performing open heart surgery
When he started tweaking at the doors i knew i was just fine with how my mini media system is 🙃🙂
😂😂😂
Woah buddy that is a hardcore install. Much more extensive than I expected and that was before you had to pull the center console out lol. As much as I'd love to switch over to full bluetooth I think I'll have to wait until my stereo dies lol. Great video!

nice to see new vids dino.
How much space is behind the Secret compartment?
Holy hell, you must have really hated that existing stereo to go through all of that.
I've seen transmissions changed with less trouble!
It was worth the time it took. The stock unit is just odd to use and it's audio quality was very lacking.
That allows for all the after market goodies like subwoofers to be installed with ease, it's even harder to hook up subs to the stock radio
For the record, you can do everything from the BC buttton on the stalk as you can with the speedo display. You can reset the trip and gas and mph and even set the clock. You can reset all your service intervals and all that too. It shows you how in your owners manual

Wow, I learn something new from you about replacing new LED radio. I have R56 2009. I will try to replace it someday. Thank you for your vlog.
Thanks for watching!
4:00 That secret compartment is what i used to put my stereo in, it fits perfectly and the lid closes too.
DirtybeatZ uk fuck ya way easier that all that crap I bet!
Thank you for that wounderful video. You really helped me with my one

I use to install premium packaging selections for Mitsubishi.. and this audio install makes that work seem to be way easier than I remembered. Hopefully this video will help me when I tackle mine! 😂😅
Very skilled and really well presented. I like the look of the original set up though..
Well done. Great video, great workmanship.

can you add a link to the radio parts where you bought them. steering wheel controls, beeps, ect

I’m looking at buying a R56 Cooper S for the summer here in the UK. Great video, hope to get a similar kit for the new car as I’ve heard the stereos aren’t great from factory.
I'm ready for this, just need a garage to start. Thanks god, I gonna get one this summer
I didn't have a stitch of grey hair when I began watching this video. I have more than Hack now. Gonna buy me some bam buds and good vibrations!
I installed the Pioneer AppRadio 4 in 2014 into my 2011 S Convertible. Same kit, but I trimmed and mounted the original stock CD player (with 150 MP3s on a "permanently" inserted CD) behind the speedo to retain the controls and display in the speedo.

Well I was going to do this but after watching this video I'll just pay someone to do it for me. Great video though!
It really wasn't too bad. This video helps greatly. Just take your time.
You’re absolutely getting a follow from me holy crap that’s amazing
Impressive video!! Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
It's a REALLY good idea to disconnect your battery before performing any work on your electrical system!
LOL, what a nightmare to replace :o
Good video :)
Fantastic detail on the disassembly and assembly. Props on a very well done video! Thank you for sharing.
The part at the end where you realized you forgot the XM radio gave me a good laugh haha

can you link the parts you used for this project?
Great job.Crutchfield electronics sells whole kits and they do the wiring for you as well.Hopefully this helps somebody.
I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S with the navigation package. I'm planning on installing a double din Android stereo. This video will be a great reference tool from me. I'll have to purchase a non-navigation system speedometer for my install. Other than that, it is similar to what you did here. Thanks!
Cracking honest vlog. Thanks for sharing buddy!
VERY DETAILED VIDEO!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Excellent video, congratulations !!!
excelente diagnostic amigo. good job
What was the name of the tune at the end when you fired up the CD player?
I do have a question. It is said some of These minis have an amplifier that needs to be bypassed. However, yours seems to work fine. Are you having problems with the audio output?
Great video. Thank you for making it. My only comment would be that it instead of routing the microphone cable through the access hole on the side of the dash as you did it would probably be easier to run it all the way down to below the dash. hello, great video... we're did you get the part for the radio? the center console, button eliminator? thanks
Great video! I spoke to an installer who said that I might have an amp driving my speakers. Did you have to wire for an existing amp? If you haven't had any problems with it in the last year, then I guess there's nothing stopping me from just ripping the sucker out!
how would you go about making the lcd display read from the obd? is there a specific connector i could buy?
Will this process work for a 2011 r56 hardtop Hatchback Cooper (non-S or Clubman)?
During your install you plugged the factory Aux plug from factory wiring harness back in its location then you plugged it into the back of your aftermarket radio. While doing this you said you “made” the patch cable? How did you do this in order to retain factory plug on one end and 3.5 jack on other end that plugs into radio? Thank you in advance for any response. Hi Dino, did you ever find or install a OBD gauge or led readout for this set up on the radio setup? I also live in NC and doing work on my wife's Mini.
Me quede muerta, yo lo desmonto y ya nunca estará como estaba, vamos que me sobran piezas y tornillos.eres un crak amigo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
mini cooper has to be kidding me with this, you literally disassembled the whole cockpit for this,
You are good Man...liked it very much !
Where did you connect the power source of the double din? Or was it plug and play?
What about the GPS antenna? Does the XM radio module require a new antenna or will it use the existing one if already equipped with SATRadio?
Before watching the video I thought you were going to take out the iconic speedometer there but you didn't and I was gonna rip you a new. Very nice good choice with everything as well.
going into the video, i was think oh yup should be a easy install. never have i been so wrong in my life.
Legend has it, the XM Radio is still waiting to be installed.
so i have a 2012 Mini Countryman. I like the panaromic shade you have there..where did you get them..I neeed protection from the heat..Thanks
Best bit was the command centre sound effects 😁
What was your solution for the Sirius XM antenna? Does it tie into your existing antenna or did you use the one that came with the Sirius XM tuner. My car already had XM on the stock radio so I am trying to avoid installing another antenna.
OMG what a nightmare, how the hell do they put these cars together😊. Good video thanks, you've put me off swapping my centre console to a sat nav console!
How much do you know about the electrical wiring in the dash of the MINI? I have a 2010 that every time it gets wet the dash goes crazy. Any ideas?
Hello, does the steering wheell, volume still work with that update? Please let me know! Thanks! Good vídeo!
What OBD LCD displays are you referring to, I’d like to get that?!
Please make a video showing the thing while on with the menu etc and how happy you are with it or not and so on
Holy wacamole thank you so much, great video
Can you link the radio parts you used with the new radio? The radio, the center frame, etc.
hi there have you got a link to where you got all the parts from thanks
The Cosmic Game, good choice. Nice Album
Will I be able to use my steering controls
Nice Video. Do you know if a Double Din Bezel exist for 2002 R53? I have not been able to find one.
That was incredible. I have a 2007 mini cooper just like yours. I would pay you to do mine. But I am sure you would hate to go through all that hassle again.
excellent video my congratulations!! Just tell me one thing...how to connect the interface harness for control on the steering wheel?? greetings!!
I felt like doing a happy dance when you got the console out.
