Linda Ronstadt was the dominant solo female artist of the 70s. She was mostly on the rock charts, but she could cross genres as easily as most people cross their living room. She later had a tremendous career singing traditional Spanish songs. She is a legend all over the world, and she's worthy of that adoration. And all of us guys were absolutely in love e with her in the 70s ❤

Linda Ronstadt was huge in the 70s. She sold out arenas and stadiums for years, and her voice was powerful enough to fill those venues. She has a huge discography, and she could sing anything. She really rocked out. Look for her live in Atlanta 1976 doing TUMBLING DICE/YOU'RE NO GOOD MEDLEY. She also covered many ballads, Motown hits, and straight up country. She has an album of traditional Mexican songs (her father was Mexican- American), and she performed on Broadway in the operetta " Pirates of Penzance". She is my favorite performer.

Can't remember the exact year, but I don't think I was older than 20...so we'll say 1973-74. Anyway, I went to a large outdoor concert in a stadium in Tampa while I was staying with friends in Bradenton. Linda Ronstadt was in the lineup and she and her backup band were awesome. After she did a number of songs, she introduced her band and told the audience they were called the Eagles and had an album of their own coming out. The Eagles played about three or four songs and I was so impressed I told my friends "mark my words, you just saw a future super group". I called that one right!!!

Linda Ronstadt was great musician and singer. She brought a lot of older music to modern pop ears. This is one example Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou". Doris Troy's "Just One Look", Buddy Holly's " It Doesn't Matter Anymore" & "That'll Be The Day". Betty Everett's 'You're No Good", which was a #1 Pop hit for her, are just some examples. She also did Motown Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears" and "Ohh Baby Baby". She was the top Rock female artist of the 70s. Only she and Donna Summer could fill the big arena's, like the men back in the 70s. She had 6 top 10 hits on the Pop charts in the decade (behind Summer with 9 (4#1s), Olivia Newton John also had 9 top 10s, Streisand had 7), but like Donna Summer, Linda sold albums and lots of them (in the US market).

1977. Such a beautifully sung song. That voice drips with emotion. Linda had some excellent songs, and was a great interpreter of other writers' songs, from this one (by Roy Orbison) to Michael Nesmith ("Different drum") to Warren Zevon ("Poor poor pitiful me"). Sadly she's been in poor health for the last few years and can no longer sing.

I can’t believe I just heard you say “I’ve never heard of her.” Wow! You have a wide world of music to experience from the exceptionally talented Ms Linda Rondstadt. I hope you get to it soon. She wasn’t a song writer but the definition of vocal artist. She paved the way for female rockers like Stevie Nicks and Pat Benetar.

By 1977 when this song was at the top of the charts Linda was being called the Queen of Rock, the first female to have that particular honorific since she was the first female to sellout stadiums and arenas. Linda's break out album "Heart Like a Wheel" had 2 songs released on the same day in Nov 1974. They were "You're No Good" (released to pop) and the Hank Williams classic "I Cant Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" (released to country). By the next year both songs rocketed to the top of three charts. That's right 3 charts. YNG to the top of pop/rock and the R&B charts, ICHI to the top of country. She's the first artist to have songs at the top of 3 charts at the same time, maybe the only artist to accomplish the feat.
Should you choose to explore more of her catalog you will find yourself diving down a rabbit hole of immense proportions. She's released 30 studio albums most of which went gold, platinum or multi-platinum in 8 different genres. She took home Grammys in 5 of those genres another feat no other artist has come close to matching.

Linda helped form The Eagles, Glenn Fry and Don Henley played in her band but were already writing insanely great songs so she suggested Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon…it was just that simple and she helped launch the song Desperado because it wasn’t going anywhere and after that both had a hit with it💜

In late '77 she was the first female artist to have 2 songs in the top ten simultaneously with this BLUE BAYOU (#3) and IT'S SO EASY (#5). I particularly liked her cover of Warren Zevon's POOR POOR PITIFUL ME, although Zevon's original had an extra verse. Try her Live onstage performance of "La Charreada" with Mariachi Vargas.

Had the very good fortune to meet her in 1980, when she was campaigning for her boyfriend at the time, California Governor Jerry Brown, when he was running for President. I'm happy to say she was as nice as she is talented, and very genuine. A great memory from my college days.

Beautiful is a great description, for the song and, most especially, the singer. Linda Ronstadt has an operatic voice, no really she sang in the musical Pirates of Penzance, a comic opera by Gilbert & Sullivan. Roy Orbison (and Joe Melson) wrote this song and Orbison sang it way back in 1963. Linda covered it in 1977 and made it a Top 5 hit. I was already in love with Linda from her stint with the Stone Ponys. And when this came along, I was convinced that I would marry her. She really did sound lonesome. That's what the song is about, being lonely, missing home and wishing to be back where you can take your shoes off and put up your feet. It's also about a long lost love. Linda's voice is beyond beautiful, it is engrossing. Please react to "Willing", another country song with great heart sung by this great lady.

Linda Ronstadt took the song to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1977, where it held for four weeks, as well as #2 Country and #3 Easy Listening. It also reached #2, holding there for four weeks, on the Cash Box Top 100 chart.
The single was RIAA certified Gold (for sales of over 1 million US copies) in January 1978. It was the first of Ronstadt's three Gold singles. Don Henley of the Eagles sang backup on the recording.[13] "Blue Bayou" was later certified Platinum (for over 2 million copies sold in the United States). It was a worldwide smash.[citation needed].
Ronstadt's version was nominated for the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Ronstadt also recorded a Spanish-language version of the song, titled "Lago Azul (Blue Bayou)", which was released in 1978 on the single Asylum E-45464, backed by "Lo Siento Mi Vida", a previously released Spanish song that Ronstadt herself co-wrote. This version has never been included on any reissues of Simple Dreams.
Ronstadt later performed the song on the episode 523 of The Muppet Show, first aired October 26, 1980 on UK, and May 16, 1981 on United States.
Because of this song, Dickson's Baseball Dictionary records that a "Linda Ronstadt" is a synonym for a fastball, a pitch that "blew by you". That phrase was coined by Mets broadcaster Tim McCarver, during a Mets telecast in the 1980s.
Ronstadt's version appears, in edited form, in the 2017 film American Made and in Tony Scott's 2004 film Man on Fire.
Blue Bayou" was originally recorded by Roy Orbison at the end of 1961. In the UK, it was released by London Monument as the double A-side track with "Mean Woman Blues" on a Monument Records single (HLU 9777), where both sides peaked at number 3. In the US, it was issued as a B-side single, peaking at number 29; the A-side, "Mean Woman Blues", peaked at number 5. The song also appeared on Orbison's 1963 full-length album In Dreams. According to the authorised biography of Roy Orbison,[2] a rare different version of "Blue Bayou" was released only in Italy (London 45-HL 1499).

The song is about a longing to return to a place of happiness, perhaps home or just somewhere that holds a special place.
If you're unfamiliar with Linda you're in for a treat and a wealth of discovery. She was the most successful (and highest paid) female singer of the 70's and once she tired of performing in rock arenas started an exploration on of many different genres of music including jazz, New Wave, mariachi, operetta, country, folk and traditional pop (otherwise known as The Great American Songbook) among others. She was also collaborated with other artists to much success perhaps the best known is her two albums with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris-Trio and Trio II.
    Some places to start exploring:
Rock-"When Will I Be Loved", "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me", "Desperado", "Different Drum"
Traditional Pop-"What's New", "I'm a Fool to Want You"
    Mariachi-"La Charreada", "La Cigarra"
Country-"The Sweetest Gift" (with Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris), "After the Gold Rush"
Duets-"Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville), "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram)
Pop-"Adios", "Long, Long Time", "Love Has No Pride"
That's really just a smattering, her catalog is deep. Unfortunately she is too ill to sing any longer but she's left behind a tremendous legacy.
