      A friends 80 yr old father came over for some advice on how to build some custom cabinets, and I spent a couple of hours telling him how to do things, and he said to me "you love your work, I can tell by the way you talk about it...." (I'm a woodworker).

    Im 80 yrs old and grew up with these machines. My first cycle was a 1947 Indian Cheif barn find. I would never think of starting that engine before fogging the cylinders and valve train for lube as well as the tranny primary chain and engine sprocket. Roll it over with the lifters exposed and checked for movement and settings engine timing verify the function of the distributer advance function. Fog top end prelube through that old stove pipe throttle full open.
    stove pipe. Make sure that old girl is turning over smoothly. No sticking valves or binding. Proof your spark. Give her a big hug ❤and wake her up gently.😂 Dandahermit🎉🎉

    Glad you found a gem! It’s not uncommon for museum pieces to be altered/faked! A buddy spent $80,000 on a classic one owner GTO only to find out that it was prettied up for museum days! The motor was not original and had numbers restamped to appear numbers matching! It was a high mileage engine that was swapped in. The body had work done as well and under fluorescent light looked great but once in the sun revealed signs! Took him two years and $24000 in attorney fees to get his money back from the museum! He ended up keeping the car and settled for a 65,000 refund so he paid just under $40,000 for the car in the end and was able to get the numbers matching engine and transmission back! The museum started an investigation to find out how the car was certified and insured when donated but magically changed over 10 years on display! Turns out the mechanic employed by the museum was swapping parts out when he was supposed to be maintaining/ fixing leaks so the cars arnt leaving puddles! He was prosecuted and a search warrant recovered over $300,000 in stolen parts in his possession! Ended up costing the museum over half a million to settle other claims from previous sales!

    TO be completely honest with you, Sean. It doesn't matter what you paid for this bike. This bike has all the signs that it was loved throughout its life and actually ridden and enjoyed by its previous owner and not put up to be a showpiece and I would say that's more valuable than anything 100% original. The '37 Knuckle deserves to continue to be ridden and enjoyed regularly. Such a beautiful bike and those pipes sound amazing!

      Rather than take the pessimistic view, I read this as "it doesn't matter what you paid" meaning he obviously can afford it and the value is there, so price aside he got an awesome bike that should be enjoyed rather than stuffed away in a garage collection of dust on motorcycle.. I must say, I agree, what a find and how awesome it must be to have the ability to add this to a collection of "ride it as much as you can and whenever you get the chance" motorcycles. So, @dilligafdude9434 I agree and well said.

    Wow, memories, when I heard the bike run. Before and after timing adjustment that is. I had a memories come to me for the 1st time in my 45 ish years of my 53. The first father I remember had an old knuckle head in the mid 70s. I remember hearing it run exactly the same as the before and after timing adjustment. I swear I think I was in a playpen in the front yard. I also remember him taking up some muscles or ligaments in his leg from the same bike backfiring? Something about the kick starter kicking back? I never became a motorcycle guy.
    Thank you very much for that memory. I'm a little emotional as I write this.
    The eyes of youth painted Mike Sr. in a not so flattering light. I now know he loved all 3 of us boys very much. I, I'm sad that I didn't see that till I was almost out of high school. He's been gone years now but the warmth and happiness I felt in that moment has given me a memory that will no longer be forgotten. I'm sure the bike, as all investments, has moved on. However, one day I would like to meet you and shake your hand in gratitude. I was raised to believe that shaking a man's hand was one of the most respectful things you can do.
    Maybe even get my 2 brothers to take the trip with me.

    This video truly shows WHY WE LOVE HARLEY DAVIDSON and what owning one does for a person. Sean you looked like a kid given the keys to a candy store. This was truly a gift to watch. Some oil and a few twists and turns and she is on the road. That is truly inspiring for the guy who asks "Is a vintage Harley worth the investment?" Just for the Fun-Factor ALONE, the answer is a definite YES. Thank you for sharing this. For a moment i could smell the exhaust gravel and gasoline in my sinuses. Awesome video!!!

  • @SubieSpecs
    @SubieSpecs Před 11 měsíci +1

    What can I say, I'm so glad this worked out for you, the affirmation that she's about as genuine and original as you can really ask for, from the master himself. A bust on the paint but I'll bet you had a pretty good idea going into it, that this was the case. But knowing the rest is basically original or period must be a great relief!

  • @Hakulanni
    @Hakulanni Před 11 měsíci +1

    Sean, I'm thrilled that you spent that huge amount of money wisely. The wheel covers numbering high on the paint gauge is okay, as long as it's mostly original... I'm looking to buy my first Bike from a Junkyard (to repair it) and I'm terrified, praying that what I end up getting doesn't kill me. Of course, I'll have it checked by a motorcycle mechanic. I haven't owned a Bike since the 70s (I owned a 900 CC BSA, last). By the way, I'm a relatively young-looking, fit 68-year-old. My PCP gave me the OK as long as I observe speed limits and keep an eye out for Jerks on the road.

    I about choked when he said he didn't know if it would start. WAIT, WHAT? Back up the truck. He paid $100,000 and didn't even know if it would start? Yikes, I was having some serious doubts about the wisdom of this purchase.
    Matt is a living encyclopedia of Harley info. IMPRESSIVE.
    As he went over the bike and kept finding items that were ONE YEAR ONLY I had a feeling it would turn out well. Then when the bike started, I felt some goosebumps crawling up my back.
    I thought the paint looked a bit too nice to be original but I missed hearing if it was at least original color.
    I would be tempted to polish that paint down so it was not so thick.
    That is a rolling piece of history.

    What a great video. And Matt is just the man, his knowledge is a thing to see. You've got a great bike there. PS: Matt loved that paint-gauge, you could see that. I'd have given it to him...in return for him finding a couple of those original gems for the saddlebag mounts. 🙂

    • @Dilip122S
      @Dilip122S Před 5 měsíci

      Now I have to correct myself. Sean, generous soul that he is, gave the paint gauge to Matt. Massive respect, Sean lives by what he believes. I shouldn't be surprised, I've seen him do it often enough, buying gas for strangers, the kid he gave the moped to...such positive, life-affirming stuff. Apart from the cool motorcycles, that's why I'll always stay subscribed to Sean's channel.
