DeviantArt is Dying - Here Are 4 Other AMAZING Art Sites to Check Out

- So with DeviantArt forsaking its entire artist community by offering an abomination they call, "DreamUp" to somehow make AI generated art any less terrible, I asked the community on Twitter which art websites I should look into. So I did.
As with any video, I do my best to do proper due diligence prior to posting. If you find an error in my research, please let me know!

In light of ArtStation's policy announcement in December regarding AI art on their site, I decided to make a video surrounding the controversy and my thoughts on the issue. 🦆
Watch here: czcams.com/video/vfgw-QPdIEg/video.html
I have been falsely accused after I made my first Deviantart account, and people have been abusing me nonstop, and it is the truth! They were lying about me nonstop, too, and they celebrated my death, what cold, heartless jerks they are! I was too scared to go back to Deviantart because of those jerks assaulting, abusing, and cyberbullying me!
LIE : I am Talia 2021
LIE 2 : I start wars on the internet!
I honestly prefer newgrounds, not because I grew up on it but also cause it mainly focuses on helping each other out (like how you said In the video!)
I really like Newgrounds and how is evolved. I used to play the flash games on the site once upon a time. It's refreshing to come back to see how the community has really grown and thrived. 🥹🦆
The site really is alive again?
Like, it might be the most suitable place for my weird animations... CZcams might not like them if it notices them.
@@Shimamon27 NG is definitely the place for your animated work, however weird it may be. No need to worry about that. I've been there for only two weeks & I've seen all _kinds_ of s***...
@@luckypoyo is it good for beginners? Artists who at least gotten decent at their drawing skills so they can post their best works. With each year getting better and better when learning. Is NG now viable for posting comics? I really find a good site instead of Deviantart.
Newgrounds is good, in fact I consider this as one of the platform for hosting my version of *If the Emperor had a Text to Speech device*
Other than requiring VPN to access from Indonesia, I use it as one of Deviantart alternatives
Been using InkBlot for a few months now, and honestly it's really great! I love how active the devs are, and how quickly they answer questions and post status updates. It's so refreshing from other art sites.
Thanks for this! I don't want to post on deviantart for what they've done so I like the suggestions you made! I'm making a comic for fun but it is a little intense (specific (loud) color pallete and the characters getting really hurt) so I can use some suggestions, even some of what you suggested in the comment section!
I'm mostly making a comment for the algorithm like that other comment did lol
I appreciate the support! And yes, I would love to take a deep dive into some of the more comic-focused sites as I myself am going to be working on a comic sometime in the nearish future. I have some Live2D models to finish first though including a V2 model for myself.
It's good that some other platforms don't allow AI-generated art (schlock) but the more important question is: what are they doing, if anything, to give users the option to make their art inaccessible to the AIs? There has to be some technical solution to the indiscriminate vacuuming up of images for the training of the AI programs...some programmer can surely think of a solution. Admittedly any solution won't work forever--we all know technology is just another arms race.
As for me, I haven't decided yet. My work is pretty traditional...the closest I come to digital anything is editing a piece in Photoshop or GIMP. Yes, I am a dinosaur & happy to be one. Lots of pen work & ink n' brush. Am moving inevitably towards watercolors. I don't know what platform would fit me best...am pretty sure it's not Artstation, though.
Yeah, recent events with updated ToS makes it clear there are issues with AI art and it's a shame since it was a decent platform otherwise.
Regarding defense against AI, there's no definitive way to stop it outside of putting images behind a "wall" and stopping them from showing up on cached sites. The "NoAI" tag is supposedly helpful to deter but I don't think it's a definitive answer.
I have been considering Inkblot for a while. I love Deviant Art and have been on the platform since 2006, but since Wix bought it out and instated Eclipse, things really got pretty bad. However, I like to download artwork and keep it on my own personal collection on my PC and I can't seem to figure out how to do that on Inkblot. I'd like to make me an account on the site, but being able to download artworks would be the major driving factor for me to make my own gallery and start uploading my own works to it.
Yeah I'm not sure if that is a feature or will be a feature as of yet.
@@luckypoyo I sent the devs a tweet yesterday to ask about that. They told me it is in their plans to add a Download button later down the line, though no mention about the possibility to right-click > Save Image As. I hope that also gets added, eventually. Especially if I do make an account there.
I do like that they communicate pretty openly with their community. I follow them on Twitch and watch their Livestreams when I am working when they're on. 🦆
The unfortunate truth is, ArtStation is a site specifically for professional users, so in short, most stuff on the site is heavily disallowed, like pornography. At the very most, the creators of ArtStation would have a much more lenient version of the site to allow stuff like this. And I may be wrong about this, but it does not seem to have a post/journal system like what DeviantArt has.
I totally feel comfy on Artfol 👁 but interesting to hear other options
I recommend Flickr
Edit: I just realized I'm somewhat repeating myself from the last video here, but the facts still stand.
I removed almost all art of mine from DA after that whole scandal. (Not worried about my art being stolen 100%, just worried about my characters. It was unclear what was happening at first.) Due to the fact they are willing to break their own rules to use the Dreamup, I'd rather not post art there again. (Though I miss doing it. This was the most fun year I've had in a long time, being able to share art and stories with people like this.)
I've been tossing the idea between going to Inkblot, Weasyl, or Newgrounds thanks to this video. I'm just trying to figure out which place would be best.
For context, my main art and stories are all family-friendly PAW Patrol and Christianity content. So finding the sweet spot is super hard.
Plus most my friends are still choosing to hang around DA, which doesn't help my decision. (They are unaware of more recent developments in DA's stuff, but I don't know how to tell most of them. They seem content and I don't want to ruin that.
Oh well enough about my issues. Your video is very informative and I thank you for it. You deserve more attention. Imma subscribe actually. :)
God bless you and have a wonderful day/night.
I appreciate the support! And yeah I actually just uploaded to Artfol for the first time last night to check out how fluid the app works. I am finding I really like the feel of the app so I even subscribed to their Prisma plan so I can take a look into their beta site.
I hope you can figure out the best platform for your work. Newgrounds has been around forever and the community is there for artists who might need some support. Seeing they don't like AI art, it seems a pretty safe bet for most people I think.
I made an Artstation account years ago but I never use it since then cuz I rarely saw people using it. So yeah I end up using Pixiv instead. I don't wanna use Twitter like my friends did.
I have ArtStation and use it, but to me it's kinda like LinkedIn but for artists. There's a lot of professionals in the gaming and animation industry posting work there. Not so much regular artists of lower or medium skill level who do it as a hobby or as content for their following.
I still need to look into Pixiv too once I finish the bulk of my research into the nightmare that is Stable Diffusion.
I’m still on deviantart, but I just made a Newgrounds account.
I’m kinda nervous on making the move… (also my only fear of Newgrounds is accidentally pressing the Adult filter when searching my comfort characters… but deviantart traumatized me more…). But I’ll TRY to get used to it
Thank you so much for making this video!
I wanted to get back into drawing and try to make a manga style comic, but I don’t know where to post it.
I’m looking for a more casual website, and I don’t really care about getting a lot of traction.
I heard pixiv would be a good option, but it looks like it’s more for a South Asia audience and I’ve been hesitant to try it.
Thanks for the feedback!
I haven't personally looked into Pixiv but might do so to see what other platforms are around for artists. This video was just a brief overview of four sites I was suggested to take a look at. Depending on what kind of comic format you want to go with, you could try Webtoon for either short pages or for long scrolling comics. Tappytoon was another but I'm not very familiar with the platform.
Depending on how big of a following you currently have, you could even look into hosting your own site for your comics but that would have a small upfront cost. Worth it though if you have enough engaged readers though to pay for itself.
There's also Patreon to consider along with Ko-Fi, which I personally prefer Ko-Fi. From what I've heard, it isn't super artist friendly, despite a lot of artists using it. You can pay a pretty low subscription fee monthly to sell to your audience fee-free and they allow you to provide paid content along with free. The caveat here though is those platforms are less used to discover new creators and more like add-ons for creators to use with their existing audience.
With so many options, it's really hard to choose, but if you don't have a big following or are just getting started, I'd probably stick to well known/established platforms that are free to use at first.
Good luck on your art journey and I hope you can find the best option that works for your needs!
@@luckypoyo Thank You! ^^
I use all of these art platforms and here's my thoughts on these:
Inkblot is good, but still in beta
Artfol is also good, but mobile only for now
Newgrounds is good and older than deviantart, require VPN to access from my country
Artstation is bit too professional for me, and Wix make Deviantart Artstation ripoff to nickel and dime professionals
I also looks forward Artspacious and Preefix as well unnamed deviantart alternative made by one of my new friends
I definitely look forward to hopefully seeing some new art hosting websites showing up, since everyone is different and has different needs. And I agree that Artstation feels very professional. It's good for people who want to host their portfolio but some people can feel intimidated when they post their art because some of it looks REALLY good.
@@luckypoyo Side7? Itaku?
to be fair, we're not talking about Sheezyart(died twice), Artrise(Stillborns), and Buzzly(it's drama did killed it for even me)
If someone kind enough is interested of making a master list of all of the art hosting sites, please do, I'm Graduating with a Graphic design major in 2 months and I also do personal art for fun, so I'm kind of looking for an audience for my non school art, but I'm not 4LG0 nuts as I post irregularly ●3●; The small space between my graduation and landing a job will buy me time to post art for fun on most of my handles, I'm still on Insta, but I'll need many new homes if the typical sites are sinking like the Titanic ; v ;
@@luckypoyoupdate: I gives up inkblot for either bugs, at least we still have side7
I have been using instagram but many people (artist’s most) began to leave because of the meta verse thing
I am planning to move to different platforms like artfol and Newgrounds in the near future
Some friends wanted me to go to deviant art but of course it has a lot of negative things
My primary issue right now with DeviantArt is the fact they failed to fully acknowledge the issue with their shiny new AI art tool.
A few minutes of research will pull up articles about not just artists who feel robbed but also ethical issues.
Nobody wants to find out their art was made by an AI that was trained using things like medical records or worse, pictures of children. It's extremely off putting and a reality check for a lot of people when they find out.
@@luckypoyo :0
I been on Deviantart for 2 years ago.
One of my friend from Instagram.
He told me that he quit Deviantart because he feel uncomfortable of arts.
DA cancelled my account today. 10 years ago no one had an issue with them.
So Artfol is like twitter while artstation is like Deviantart?
Should throw this out there that not only is ArtStation primarily used by and for professional artists typically advertising their portfolios for jobs so it isn't really encouraged for hobbyists, they were also one of the major controversial platformed that allowed not only Ai works on the site but for images posted to it to be used to generate Ai works. no idea if they've done anything about it but for the longest time we boycotted the Ai goons and ArtStation for the shit they pulled.
was gonna post some drawings to deviant art but then heard the news so ive been looking for another platform other than twitter
Yeah, I was going to go back to DeviantArt but then the AI stuff happened. I intend to research additional platforms over the coming days/weeks and share my findings. 🦆
Artstation joined with AI-Sauron. Guess its Newgrounds for me...
Yeah, I really hope they learn their lesson from this. AI art in its current state is not just theft but entirely unethical on a larger scale.
I rather go to somewhere else other than people in Deviantart abusing me 24/7 and not dealing with users who attacked me first!
If deviantart dies, Legend Never Dies.
In its current state, DeviantArt is bound to fail, though it may become but a distant memory in years to come. DA introduced paid, unethical AI to the platform just as artists started to return to the site. It's a shame honestly. I hope they pivot and either build an actually ethical AI that doesn't contain sensitive photos such as medical records or unethically sourced art or remove it altogether.
Adding the "noai" tag by default to allow artists to opt out was a start but they need to really mean it and embrace what their userbase is asking for.
Who the heck is Legend
I believe they were referring to the phrase, "heroes are remembered but legends never die". At least that's how I interpreted it.
The third one does not allow stop motion (minus), the fourth one is not fuctional on a personal computer (minus), the second one is great because of the status against sexualisation (but because some of my artworks are in some point scary it will still make problems), the first one is pretty cool when it is enough developed.
newgrounds is old as time.
you know what? sure, ill make a newgrounds acount, its wild and free like the old internet. And AI not being allowed is nice too
My newgrounds account isn't that new
Artstation has a huge Ai problem. there was a whole scandal with them being against ukraine too
I'm aware. I haven't been able to make an update video as of yet on the issue. Holidays and New Year's makes it challenging.
There should be also Polycount that is dedicated to gamdev. It's standing very strongly on social intercaction and you can not only post your portfolio in there but also for receive or give critique. Similar to Artstation you can treat it as job offering platform.
Oooh thank you for the info. I'll definitely check it out! It's hard to find good platforms. I found I like Artfol so far due to the critique feature. Haven't had enough time lately to test it out though. 🦆
Naming the website "Deviant" Art basically doomed it from the start didn't it lmao
deviant art is already dead. artstation is full of ai to the point where the only way to find a good real art piece is to look up an artist directly. all the ai people are flooding it and all the good artists either left or stopped posting.
ik this is one year old ive been looking for where to post my art
but what do u reccomend (the websites u mentioned) for artists to post sfw but also with horror/gore art?
iam really indecisive which where to post my art comfortably
I actually have been meaning to update this channel with a new video so keep an eye out soon. In the meantime, I think Inkblot or Cara may be appropriate. I still need to research into it. Cara is a brand new site for artists meant to partially act as a portfolio site similar to Artstation but with an emphasis on no-AI.
They will make some AI guidelines soon and I am pretty sure they will have a no AI art policy + they have a report function that is actually reliable
Yeah I'm pretty pleased so far - but I need to do a deep dive video on it. I bought the Prisma (not the similar sounding company which uses Stable Diffusion) subscription to check out the desktop site since I couldn't cover it in this video. It'll be interesting to see how things unfold and I hope they do indeed bar AI art. Besides being just another annoying trend that will probably fizzle and burn out anyhow, there's far too much danger if you know what's in the dataset the AI uses to form pictures.
@@luckypoyo they made an announcement yesterday, AI art is banned on their platform, they also said to report it with the "other" function
Oh that's splendid then. After some of the chaos unfolding on other sites, it's nice Artfol is making a stand on the issue.
ArtStation hasn't been so kind to artists I suppose because they officially made it okay it seems to allow AI art despite being a PORTFOLIO site where you demonstrate your own work, not the work of an AI. But hopefully they right that issue soon if they haven't already. www.creativebloq.com/news/artstation-homepage
It’s funny, I only started using DA a year ago. It’s thriving as far as I can tell.
she is a duck!
Indeed I am
Maybe I'm join inkblot in the future.
i literally just made a deviantart acc for the first time and now im seeing people don't really like it,, dang
Yeah, besides the blatant disregard for how artists feel about art AI DeviantArt thought it would be great to anger them and it put them in a terrible light.
Some people still use DeviantArt but a lot of people are moving or have moved.
I just recently joined deviantART for promoting my webcomics and so far, have had good experiences with it.
Useful video. Here's a comment for the algorithm
Thank you so much
The problem That None of this Art sites expect Deviantart, are not giving me a lot Followers!
Here in Deviantart I had 100 Followers in 23 Nov and I already have 200+ Followers Today :(
Well what really made DeviantArt crash and burn (this time) is their ongoing use of their DreamUp AI despite the fact that they used Stable Diffusion to make it and Stable Diffusion is all kinds of ethical and potential legal problems.
Newgrounds is still around?
Hasn't it plagued by various... unsafe content at a certain point?
Currently I mostly do animations, which I upload here.
CZcams is my comfort zone, so, I just have fun here.
Might check what goes on in Newgrounds nowadays, I wonder if they'll try to get the old vibes going.
It used to be a pioneering site for the most ridicules and awesome creations in the world prior to it's downfall and the rise of old youtube.
Newgrounds in recent days looks pretty solid and lively. Moreso after DeviantArt released DreamUp and a good amount of artists started fleeing there.
And if you're wondering about DreamUp, I did a few videos that covered the topic but the most important takeaways are it's an AI art generator nobody really asked for and now DeviantArt is facing a lawsuit alongside Stability AI and Midjourney. I can't say for certain what precedent will be set, but that's just what is happening.
I'd definitely give Newgrounds a look. They've definitely made the site a lot cleaner than it was back in the early days - everything is neatly organized. Since it's a primarily community supported site, it also seems to have latched onto the idea of doing right by the community since it couldn't thrive without it, in contrast to some sites/services that we've seen do dumb things in recent years.
@@luckypoyo That sounds really good, I'll have to check it out!
I'll give the site the benefit of the doubt for still being in the past the pioneer of cool online awesome content hub, it gave allot of good memories, and allot of the creators there ended up here on youtube.
DeviantArt I never felt I have a place there, it demoralized me rather easily in the past, so, I have little issues with it sticking itself downunder.
@@luckypoyoI’m gonna try it out rn
I am starting my online art journey
Congratulations! Don't let AI scare you - there's plenty of room to grow even with such a hurdle. 🦆
Inkblot looks promising
Yeah, I plan to start submitting art there to see how much visibility there is for mediocre artists (I'm definitely not a high tier artist) on the platform. I'm also curious as to what kind of algorithm the site uses if any to push art. I plan to do some deep dive analysis videos on some platforms probably by the end of the year.
@@luckypoyo will you do inkblot more deeply i truly want to know its potential
Most likely yeah. I like that its ownership consists of diverse people especially - my hope is that it'll positively influence how they want to push creator artwork. Already they've made their stance clear against AI generated art which means artists should feel safer posting their work there.
Well artstation aged like milk about the ai
Yeah... I wasn't happy to see how they handled the rise of AI art. People, especially non-artists, have no idea how horrible the state of AI art is right now. We have art theft combined with all kinds of ethical problems.
ok so tumblr algorithm is as dumb as youtube maybe even worse and it costed them the userbase
deviantart half of art is either ai generated or stolen now thats a new low
newgrounds is pretty much didnt changed also no way to grow if youre cursed
furaffinity is ok alternative but no one cares if you make sfw artwork or are cursed by curse i mean no matter how good you are the algorithm always wins and destroys your future for no reason
artstation is same as deviantart some artist left due to lack of trust that epic games dumpsterfire
artfol is just instagram but probably less trash cause mark zoinkerburger lizard
honestly theres no good platform for artist unless youre popular then its easy everywhere
To a point, that's very true. Some platforms are near impossible to grow on.
But it really boils down to preference - some artists like certain features that may exist on certain platforms. Like, I personally value being able to post multiple types of art content - like how Newgrounds can allow you to upload videos, games even, or just static art.
I do agree we need more options though. That's why I've been trying to look into new ones. Unfortunately it's been difficult while managing a small puppy. I want to do a deep dive into a few art-centered platforms though and even update the info from this video.
@@luckypoyo any art site needs 1 basic thing
able to give small artist equal chances as these popular ones
the problem with is deviantart where ai generated jpegs get attention it dont deserve
The only issue is that it's nearly impossible for large art platforms. Popular art will always pop up. The AI art is definitely an issue but the only solution there is just avoid platforms allowing AI art.
The only real solution at the moment is using smaller platforms that aren't saturated, much like content creators or streamers looking to rise in popularity. It's difficult but not impossible.
For me it’s new ground I am just getting started in life by being a author, artist and content creator so if it is ok I am really excited on how I can create my kind of content.❤️🔥
Can you upload pictures from coloring apps on there
No. I've been shafted by Shitter's (Twitter's) practices.
Right now, yeah Twitter is a kind of trainwreck and Elon threatened to ban people using Twitter to promote their other social media but quickly saw how fast that backfired when suddenly Mastodon, Hive Social, and LinkTree were trending... I and others have noticed a drop in impressions/engagement since the recent rapid spiral started. Wonder why. 🦆
The best tactic just use them all duh XD
even use Chinese sites to just harvest all the views haha
am also hopelessly addicted to one comic of DA so yeah lol
I suppose there's nothing wrong with that. Though on the point of the comic, you could always check if the creator uploads on multiple platforms - might be your ticket off the platform if you're with the group that would like to abandon the train wreck before they do something that completely collapses the site.
@@luckypoyo am too deep into Twitter an DA funny people XD I may die young
I was really looking forward to checking out Artfol, considering it is advertised as being an app for artists. But, I was incredibly disappointed to find out it is just an app for really generic weeb art, furries, and children's scribbles. Also, getting messages from little kids who are clearly underaged asking if I could draw their favorite cartoon characters having sex was really gross and uncomfortable. It also being really slow, and constantly crashing was annoying, too
Well that certainly is concerning. Unfortunately due to work I haven't had a chance to further explore Artfol as of yet to see for myself.
The platform seemed to be pretty interesting, with features not usually seen on others like asking for people to critique with that tag when posting - but I do remember seeing a good bit of furry art when I originally checked it out.
I'm sorry you had that experience and I hope Artfol is taking measures to ensure underage users aren't using the platform to solicit NSFW art from others. That's a pretty big deal.
If they are too succeed they will likely need measures to moderate the platform effectively to prevent stuff like that from happening on an ongoing basis.
I personally didn't have too many technical issues with the app when I tried it, but the desktop version is definitely in beta for a reason. I was unable to navigate through the site when I last checked.
Hi 'm 14 years old and I'm looking for art site that is perfect for me and to make drawings so if anyone is here pls i be willing to listen and i understand :D
there’s side7 too
I'll need to look into that one. I'm not familiar with it at all lol.
e621
I like looking at all the AI art on Deviantart. Most of it is visually interesting.
I don't really. Considering anyone can do the same with a few keystrokes and a click and the tech was built on billions of images used without consent, including pictures of children (yes, children. I looked myself and was horrified) and stolen art, I want it FAR away from me. Many others, especially artists, feel the same.
I plan on doing a video this next week doing more of a deep dive into one or more platforms since ArtStation is falling in line with DeviantArt on the issue.
My issue isn't with it replacing artists - it never will. But it is with the sheer immoral foundation it was built on. Images need to be ethically sourced and should follow COPPA laws which protect children from their information and images being used like this.
@@luckypoyo extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence...
I have my evidence fully researched and posted in these two videos.
czcams.com/video/bYiOITCVqoc/video.html
czcams.com/video/ZD7ZKhxdNQo/video.html
If you can find evidence that indicates otherwise I'd love to see it but the fact of the matter is that deepfake explicit imagery can be (and has been) made using the Lensa AI which is based on Stable Diffusion which is the exact same AI used to create DeviantArt's DreamUp which is due to the fact that there are literally photographic images scraped from family blogs and social media without regard for age or consent.
@@luckypoyo it does not even function by copying any image pixel by pixel.. so you are by default wrong. its training set is 5.4 billion images, thats peta bytes of data.. why do you suppose people can download SD and its only a couple of GB? thats because it does not just take a training image and paste it in to a new image like a glorified photoshop.
@@luckypoyo digital data is copyable. internet data is scrapable. "protected" content can be duplicated and used, just like anything publicly on the internet can be scraped for AI training. this is normal and how the internet should be functioning.

I use instagram, but have been having love and hate relationship with it. But professionals use it, when I made connections with other they always ask, "what is your IG?" So, like it or not one still needs it. I won't get rid of it, I will use artfol and other sites as supporting actors fpr the main actor. A way to explain it. But the best way to get found is by making opportunities for yourself, getting involved in online communities, competing in challenges, heck, going to comic and game cons and just talking to anyone and everyone. Because they might know the people that know some people that knows somebody.
This is really useful as someone who's not allowed to use social media and stuff 🥲
