  • Replaced the seized steering cable in our smoker craft. Was getting to the point that we had to use 2 hands to turn the slightest amount. No way that was safe. Unfortunately the helm that came in the new kit wasn’t compatible with the tilt steering and due to the recessed column in the dash, the new helm was also too short to safely install the steering wheel on it. So old helm, looks good and no wearing noticeable was used. Gear box numbers matched up where the cable joins the helm so in the end all that was needed was a new teleflex. It’s unbelievable how easy it is now to steer. Should have done this ages ago.

What’s the trick for feeding the new cable into the transom?

The motor collar was tight so I had groove out the hole from the driver side access port to get it out straight. Wasn’t fun. If you can remove the cable from the motor collar then you golden.

The original cable was corroded somewhere in the line. It took two hands and a lean to turn the wheel, felt like it was going to break the steering column. Also the collar was gummy with grease build up.
