- Starting to paint the bigger picture for the future in this one. Installing the MSD ignition box, Specifically the 6AL-2 with the built in 2 Step. This is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to prepping a vehicle for performance use especially when trying to launch efficiently. You can absolutely foot brake and hold the gas to try to achieve the RPM you want to get to and launch at.
A 2 step rev limiter lets you set the point you want your RMS to be while holding the gas then letting go of a button to accelerate past that point. They also have a harnesses specific to a lot of applications to minimize splicing and cutting. You do not need these. You can cut and splice and still be perfectly fine. Hopefully those interested in this can find this useful and answer your questions. I still have a few more things I have to find the time to install. Next I'm hoping is the line lock. Also Holley/ MSD customer service is great. Spoke with them prior to this install.

What does the msd ignition box do? I wanted to install an msd distributor on my obs but the description said I must pair it with an MSD Ignition box. Problem is I have no experience with this item.
It’s a lot of different things that the MSD boxes can do, depending on the model. Basic MSD boxes deliver a stronger and more consistent spark, especially in the higher RPMs. Putting it on a stock motor isn’t going to give you immediate power. It’s something you will get more benefits from later down the line with a built motor that spins higher RPM and more compression and what not. Not to go too far down the rabbit hole. That’s what a basic MSD box does.
Then you have some MSD boxes that can control the engines timing for power adders like boost and nitrous on top of its basic function.
The one I have does a basic MSD boxes function and has a rev limiter control. You can set your top number for the most RPM you want your motor to see and the 2 step which stops the RPM at a lower number while pressing a button. So you can take off at the same RPM every time.

THANKS MAN! Mileage is the same so far. Only been a few weeks I had it on. For factory daily driving usage this is useless. Other than the use of the 2 step for race application, only thing you may notice is smoother high rpm because of the consistently stronger spark.
You can notice the difference when you have a built motor with higher compression, more fuel and all that fun stuff.

Can i adjust timing with this?
Not this one. The one you want is the same as this, just with the added timing control feature. It’s called the “ 6AL-2 Programable”.
This one is just the 6AL-2
What coil are you running? I see its red in color, I can only find the yellow one by Accel.

@@RCSmith90 I recently rebuilt my Vortec 5.7. I had a Summit stage 1 cam (SUM-8800) installed with shorty headers. Will that MSD box work well with this set up.
@@michaelmincey2622 It will definitely work. With setups like ours it won’t make a huge difference at low rpm like with super high horsepower applications. For us it will help at the top end in the high rpm range for more efficient spark control at those rpm’s.
If it’s the MSD box with the a 2 step like the one in this video then you gain a top end rev limiter and a low rpm rev limiter to launch with.
