    His playing had such colour and his phrasing speaks to the emotions so profoundly.

    1:57 Chopin: Ballade No. 3
    23:25 Kreisler/Rachmaninoff: Liebesfreud
    30:44 Bellini/Liszt: Reminiscences de Norma
    I have this from CVR in colour, but the picture and the sound are worse. Priceless stuff. I hope it won't disappear soon, as did two Chopin etudes from similar French TV program some time ago.

    What a find this is. Bolet at the very brilliant height of his powers. And, of course, as the finest of his generation of Liszt, Rachmaninov and Chopin interpreters.
    He died a few years after this recital. And I only know this because I was there at a recital - in Bath (UK) - a few weeks before illness took him from us.
    So, yes. I've had the privilege of listening - live - to this legend of the piano.
    Bolet is indubitably on a par with the greats. Rachmaninov, had he known him, would doubtless have acknowledged him as such.

      I saw Jorge play both Liszt PC1 and PC2 in one concert in the mid 1980s. Unforgettable! RIP Jorge.

      Bolet mentions he encountered Rachmaninoff on two occasions (I believe).

      @@robert982 As a child, I was introduced by a member of a symphony orchestra he performed with at the time as a soloist. I regret not having played for him or studied with him at Curtis. I ended up in Juilliard which did not support its students. I had a mistaken impression of his life and work until recently discovering him as a great artist at the piano.

      it only became used nationwide in France in 1983 - I was there and recall the transition as the greatest innovation :)

    I did not like at all his interpretation of the Chopin's Ballade AT ALL!
    I feel he is too busy with the piano playing issues, instead of focusing on making music! Too much accents cutting the lines!

    Fine pianist. But the understanding was often simplistic, sometimes wrong-headed.

    • @James_Bowie
      @James_Bowie Před 4 lety +9

      There is no 'wrong'. Like _all_ great pianists he plays pieces in the way he wants to interpret them.

      @@James_Bowie This is why I sometimes wonder if all the sacrifice is worth bringing such painstaking journey of musicianship to the world. Dirt will always be thrown at genius.
