  • Scenes filmed at the site of the former Treblinka extermination camp in 1981.
The Treblinka extermination camp was one of the Nazi concentration camps that operated during the Second World War. It was opened in July 1942 as part of the Reinhardt Operation to exterminate the Jewish population. Treblinka was located in Poland, about 80 kilometres northeast of Warsaw.
There were two main parts to the Treblinka camp: Treblinka I and Treblinka II. Treblinka I was initially a forced labour camp for prisoners, but conditions were very harsh and the mortality rate was high. Treblinka II was an extermination camp where mass exterminations were carried out.
At Treblinka II, victims were brought in by trains, mainly from Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Upon arrival at the camp, the prisoners were quickly segregated. Men able to work were sent to a forced labour camp (Treblinka I), while women, children and the elderly were sent to the so-called "death ramp".
On the ramp, prisoners were forced to undress, stripped of all valuables and then directed to the gas chambers. The gassing was done by means of vehicle exhaust fumes. For this reason, Treblinka was one of the places where mass killing with so-called exhaust gases was used.
During the period of operation of the Treblinka camp (July 1942-November 1943), more than 800,000 people were probably murdered there. After a failed rebellion attempt in August 1943, the Germans decided to liquidate the camp. In November 1943, the camp was destroyed and the area reforested to cover the traces of the crime.
Treblinka became a symbol of the bestiality of the Nazi regime and one of the Holocaust memorial sites. After the war, a memorial to the victims was erected on the site of the former camp and the area became a place of remembrance and historical education.
The footage has been 'tweaked', the quality of the footage has been significantly improved, the resolution has been increased so that even more detail can be seen, and it is in Full HD.
