You're right! But even shifting 6th @ 1:50 and @ 3:20 the engine revs are very high. It seems that the final ratio is extremely adjusted for the track layout.

Well, all that depends actually. On racecars where crossing your arms also means the steering wheel is at full deflection, then you don't need to do this. But for example on Group N cars where the wheel might be 2-3 full turns lock to lock, different story. However even if they don't always do it, any race driver you ask will say that not crossing your arms is the proper way. Anyway, I didn't come up with this, ask a pro driver or try it out yourself for more details on how it works.

well,i got no doubt about Colin and his reflexes,but this is hillclimb,not a rally and that Lancia has around 700 horsepower and only manual transmition i can just imagine Colin driving it i'm sure that it would be crazy

Why on earth would you say crossing your arms is poor technique. Not crossing your arms is poor technique. If you dont cross your arms you have to let go of the wheel when applying lock, therefore being out of control of the car.
I wonder why the NASCAR vs. Rally battle came out... Both sports are way different, use way different cars and rules. Yet both of them are demanding. Another guy posted something about inline 4 vs. v8... damn... You must be dumb :D most of V8's are N/A engines, that produce wide power variety, great torque and awesome reliability. This Lancia inline 4 without the turbo could be only a fart machine. Audi made superior turbo inline 5 engine that can be tweaked well over 1000HP (proved by Jonus).

Because if you cross your arms and then need to turn more, you can't. Crossing your arms reduces your arms' available range of motion.

How often do need to put that much lock in. Hairpins. Show me a rally driver on tarmac that does not cross his arms and feeds the wheel instead.
