Here’s the thing about our boy, Geoff…the brilliance of forethought to go BACK in time to Ghost Riders, which was already a BIG draw for him, and to have them tell a story of when they were IN THIS WORLD..with those big rich, thick deep notes,but also the threading mid and higher tones and harmonies,THATS EMOTION in a song. Not monotone or “stringy” but a sound that draws you in, keeps you there and leaves you breathless at the end. That is story telling and eargasms all rolled into one PHENOMENAL song!!! ❤️🔥🙏🏻🤠
It's not just because I love Geoff's voice, but I will always choose his version, because of the emotion and new feelings he awakens in me with his versions. ❤
Thanks Huldra, I had heard of the original but not actually listened to it. The original gives me gospel vibes honestly. Geoff’s version is more western/country to me. Geoff did such a good job on this cover, it deserves more views than it has gotten.
Geoff, all the way. Emotions are more appropriate than the original to the story of the lyrics, like he usually does. Original has more of a gospel or blues vibe to me, where Geoff put in steel guitar and other hallmarks of western music -- which seems to better suit a game set in the old west.
I love these comparison videos! I agree, Geoff's version has a stronger emotional pull. That is why Geoff and VP are my favorite performers and have been for the last couple of years (I only found them a couple of years ago). They do such an amazing job of conveying the emotional context of the song, or creating it in some memorable cases, lol.
D'Angelo has a beautiful voice. However Geoff's version is so much more beautiful and sounds more like cowboys from the wild west singing it than in D'Angelo's version. I do have both versions on my playlist. But Geoff's is a great lullaby as well. Helps me relax and clear my mind so I get a more restful sleep.

I hadn’t heard this before I heard Geoff’s cover and I love Geoff’s cover, of course and I think it is because I love Jeff’s voice, but they both have quality in different ways. I choose my man over and above.!
The original seems to have most of the vocal notes concentrated in a narrower pitch range, which muddies the overall sound. Geoff’s vocals are much cleaner and they’re using a much larger range, which gives a clearer sound and more gravitas to the song. AND Geoff put in thunder and lightning - which is definitely an improvement!
Wow. The original sounds so hollow and bland in comparison to Geoff's intricate arrangement and performance. Amazing. I wouldn't have thought of doing such a side by side play like this.

Geoff's version is hauntingly beautiful with so much emotion, you can feel the pain of what is going on. Geoff is a genius with what he does. Thankyou Huldra for taking the time to do this for us. Argh... I´m sorry, but I believe, I´m completely spoiled... I don´t like the original at all. I said it once already, give a song to our own hunted hunter and have patience. He (and his Buddys) will make it better and look very nice doing so.
I'm going to be the one dissent, here. Geoff's is more polished and resonant. BUT the original has distinctly different voices, wailing like souls in purgatory because they DON"T match perfectly. That makes for more drama. I've sometimes noticed Geoff needs to break up his harmonies because it's too easy to fade into your own echo. Contrast is compelling.
I like the comparison to wailing souls. Seems to be a reasonable explanation why some of the chords in the original are just so WRONG. Like nails on a chalkboard WRONG. Like I hope I never have to be subjected to it again wrong. Do understand. I rarely feel that way about a piece of music. The last time I felt that way was hearing ALW's Phantom. (Unless it's VP's version.)

The original has a very 60s-70s Western soundtrack sound. Geoff's is richer and has more depth.
