- Season 4 of My Hero Academia took a dark turn with the character of Kai Chisaki (Overhaul) and his psychological and physical abuse of a little girl called Eri. Hands down one of the most realistic portrayals of psychological grooming and abuse I have seen in fiction, so much so that it's actually quite unsettling to watch and listen to back-to-back. Obviously, in the series, it's broken up with the other stuff that is going on, but editing this video and going through the clips to do so has shown me nothing but the worse side of Overhaul and the reasons why I cannot see him as a sympathetic character in any way. He was a good character, but a horrible person. The moment Deku and Mirio saved Eri and even got her to smile were my favorite parts of the series so far. Horikoshi deserves massive respect for approaching this story arc with such care, realism, and respect, rather than sensationalising it.

The ending is amazing and super impactful with Overhaul's voice calling "Eri" softly. She's safe now but Overhaul definitely would continue to haunt her dreams like that.

A few quick points about this video:
- I wanted to focus on the psychological abuse Overhaul inflicted on Eri more than the fighting and action.
- The color changes and schemes in the video’s editing may be overdone in places but it was for the sake of symbolism.
- I ended it with Overhaul calling ‘Eri’ and his hand still reaching out to her to get across that the effects of this kind of abuse never really go away- all you can do is learn to live with them looming over you.

People often forget that Kai is a cruel Sociopath. Yes he had reasonable intentions but that is no justification for his treatment of Eri. Watching Deky knock him out and Tomura cut his limbs off was very satisfying.
He is one of the most vile villains ever created. Because his abuse is very real.
It's actually not only because people forget about him.
It's because he is a well written character + some people just like villains more than these "heroes".
It's very simple.

A lot of characters in anime are overrated (especially in BNHA) and Eri is one of them.
That is your opinion not a fucking fact. Yes she is a fictional character but she feels real because of the writing. She was willing to sacrifice herself for people she barely knew even if it meant suffering horrible pain. Try showing a little empathy next time.

Exactly. I always found it ironic that someone who hated being called a villain put on a mask and turned the Yakuza into a villain group. And someone who hated filth turned himself into a disgusting monster during the fight. He’s a really compelling character.

Overhaul is not just a legit villain, he’s the very definition of a monster. He’s the shadow man hiding in your childhood closet. Something that everyone should fear.
The editing in this is great, and especially after reading your description it hits home even more. This part of the season is so intense, and it probably IS because it can be so realistic and people can truly act like this. He really is so frickin manipulative, and there's still other things going on with him and how he runs things. Overhaul I think also stands out as a character, even with only really being around for such a short time. It's certainly a roller coaster
Definitely. For this video I focussed only on his abuse of Eri, but there is so much more to work with. The way he manipulates and takes advantage of his underlings- inspiring a sick and twisted sense of loyalty in them just for the sake of using it to his advantage. The way he tries to create doubt and insecurity in Shigaraki and the League of Villains. The way he tries to make the heroes question their own sense of reality. But I’ve already made a video from Overhaul’s perspective and this one showing his abuse of Eri so I’ll have to leave the other stuff for possible future projects after I’ve worked on the other stuff I wanna do 😅
Considering that the League of Villains are relatively sympathetic characters who Horikoshi is fleshing out as victims of circumstance, Overhaul really stands as the main character that represents true ‘evil’ in the series. I get that some people see him as a sympathetic character, but no one can genuinely believe he’s in any way a good person- and that’s what I like about his character. It’s a nice break from the League of Villains.

I think both in life and in stories sometimes we see as "bad" are actually way more complex than that, and I think anime is like the king of telling backstories and individuality and changing perspective. Definitely in the anime specifically we've seen some sense of back stories for the villains but I think that's a great point that Overhaul stands out. We get an interesting back story, but that doesn't totally influence his current behavior, he's pretty much literally a sociopath. I do think his character design and quirk is really really cool, but his actual personality... oof. It'd be cool to see if that could ever change, but probably at this point they probably wouldn't bring him back anymore, I think
@@SmoothInsomniac he’s the most evil villain in the series IMO. No other villain murders their minions for failure, is willing to harm the one person they care about (even All For One refused to hurt his brother) or repeatedly murders, abuses and tortures a little girl.

The voice actors for Eri and Overhaul seriously hit their marks.
Yeah Kellen Goff played overhaul so incredibly well, it's truly incredible how much range he has especially when you remember he also voiced glamrock freddy.

Tbh- I don’t like how people are comparing Shoto’s struggles with Eri’s, Ik it’s a joke but like, they both suffered and depending on how the character took it, doesn’t mean that their struggles were any less important/traumatising than the others
Honestly this is so amazing I can't even describe it with words-
I've only ever heard the Japanese version of Season 4, and, while the Japanese voice actors do an amazing job don't get me wrong, the twisted emotion you can hear in Overhauls voice is both amazing and honestly painful to hear, after knowing how abusive he was towards Eri. The overhaul arc of season 4 was extremely hard to watch for me due to personal reasons, but this was just- ✨incredible✨

by this I am expecting tomura's backstory amv will be made in future once season 5 comes out, and possibly new tomura amv due to his unlocked power, if my meta liberation arc is part of season 5. It will show true power of tomura, to who lot of anime only fans look down due to originaly only being able to use quirk with all of 5 fingers on hands. Oh boy non spoiled anime watchers are bout to see probably darkest season of BNHA, darker then overhaul arc in season 4.

Poor girl. She never deserved this life, she didn't need her childhood cruelly taken away from her. This sweet child accidentally killed her father, got abandoned by her mother, then handed over to a evil man who did awful things to her.
When Eri smiled and having fun at the festival, I felt my emotions welling. I love how sweet and brotherly Deku and Mirio were toward her and I think that was my favorite part seeing the boys get her to smile. It was like a reward for them, especially since they went through such great lengths to retrieve this traumatized little girl.
This was the scariest thing I've ever watched but then eri was happy and then I was happy

Effects are really nice. I like that Overhaul in monotone colours but with his mask being red.
Hope to see more Overhaul or Villains in future (Endeavor/High End/Hawks would be nice next, or maybe some type of another LoV amv/asmv that has some kind of part with Gigantomachia (he didn't get a lot of screentime (since he was shown only 3-4 (4 is kinda not confirmed) times) which would be hard but I just really like him xD)

I doubt this year- everything’s been slowed down with the virus anyway (though Japan hasn’t been hit as hard as some places) and Season 4 has only just finished. The seasons normally start in April each year except for Season 4. We’re looking at probably middle of next year.

God I loved it. I really like the part of Overhaul that cared enough about repaying his debt that he did what he did, but I really hate what he did. This and the other AMV you made (the Overhaul one) perfectly capture both those feelings, I think.
No matter how many times I've watched this I still get chills. The overall pieces fit so perfectly together it's criminal.... But beautifully put together to encapsulate the dark truths that lingers in the shadows - the fact pediatric crimes exists in the real world in those same shadows....

*When you love experimented deku au's that your mind starts subconsciously thinking of it's own au because I was subconsciously thinking about it through the video-*
If curious, the au I thought of was this: Izuku is also being used for blood but in a different way. As we all know, the doctor said it was LIKELY he wouldn't get a quirk not that he wouldn't ever. He does have a quirk, analysis quirk that lets him identify someones quirk just by looking at them. And Overhaul wanted to use that. He kidnapped Izuku when he had just told Bakugou he was quirkless, and his blood was being used to make weapons. Not just any weapons though. The analysis quirk blood he got helped create a toxin that caused a quirk malfunction in people. And bad ones. They were bullets that were RARELY used ever. But it made Izuku a prime subject Overhaul didn't want to let go of. One day, Izuku escaped and ran into his old ex-friend, Bakugou, bumping into him on his way down an alley. He was shaking and Bakugou knew something was wrong, definitely wrong. But, before he could think of what was happening or process it, Izuku got a silent threat to 'come back or else' like we know happened to Eri and eventually Bakugou got some pro heros involved and eventually Deku was saved but, during it all, Bakugou accidentally got his by a car, not horribly bad, but enough to cause amnesia. Not 'forget literally everything' amnesia but he forgot the last few months. And forgot Izuku got experimented on. And thus why he continued bullying him. And plot goes on as normal after just Izuku with extra trauma on him-

So Deku had it worse then some people make it seem. Like I said I do think todoroki and eri had it worse but you have to remember what deku had, and that deku didn’t have a dad.
