    Hey Phil Mcwonder, if you are looking into getting into the onboard entertainment and want to start at the base then I would advise you to look into working with the Entertainment Staff, Cruise Staff, Activities Hosts or Social Hosts. Its the same position, just certain cruise lines have different names. Some cruise lines have even changed the names. It is what I started off as, and you pretty much run the activities and bingo's. There are also dance parties at sail away and certain selected nights of the cruise. You may also partake in a bit of crowd control during debark and gangways during the ports of call. Its pretty much the group of people that the guests will see everywhere. They will represent the cruise director and help make sure the guests have things to do at any time of the day.
    If you wanted to take a shot at sending in a resume and attending an audition for a position like this, go right ahead. They look for all sets of skills and personality traits for it. Or if you wanted to feel a bit more comfortable, see if you can get a part time job with a DJ company as a party motivator. Or at a local bar or club in some sort of event staff type role. Or you can even go as far as taking a public speaking, Improvisation or Comedy type class to just boost your resume and skills up a little bit.
    Any little thing helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions and thanks a lot for watching!!!

      With the Spa employment they are hired out by a different company, so you can find a different way into the ship life. The one company I am familiar with is Steiner. They train and send people to the cruise lines within the Carnival Fleet. So if all goes well, you may have one contract on a carnival ship and then move over to Princess Cruise Lines. Different demographic so you will see different sides of the cruising world!

    HI John, thanks for spending the time to share you knowledge of working on cruise ships with us.
    I've got an interview with carnival for a technician "audio" position next month.
    how many are there on board and are technicians bond to crew deck when off and what amenities do you have access too when not working .

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 9 lety

      Hey Daniel Daly Thanks for watching and for reaching out! So regarding the Audio Technician, I know most ships have 2 of them on board. One for the main lounge and shows and the other for the back lounge and Comedy club. They would also work with the various lounges and sound related things around the ship as well. I don’t know if things have been changed with some of the ships with the new play list productions and upgraded shows like the Hasbro Game show…so they may have thrown in another position or everything was kept the same. With the Techs, they are known as Staff and will have guest area access. The only requirement would be to have your uniform on or dressed appropriately depending on the dress code. But most of the time you would be in your uniform anyway, if you did go out to the night club or one of the bar/lounges on an elegant night you would need to be dressed in elegant attire. All of the dress codes would be explained to you by your department head as some ships have stricter dress codes.
      Some of the Amenities you would have access to would also depend on the day (Sea days are the busiest so guest areas are usually only for when you are working) but on port days you could enjoy lunch on lido deck, grab a specialty coffee at the coffee shop. Use the Guest Gym. There are also crew areas, like the crew bar (Cheaper drinks and they accept cash!) and a crew gym. You can also check out the gift shows when they are not busy as well. Most of the guest area privileges will be available but they enforce the guest comes first. A perfect example of this is when at one of the guest area bars in the nightclub, you will not be able to sit down at the bar on a bar stool. Let me know if you have any other questions! I will try to answer them as best as I can. I should have some newer videos coming up soon with more tips and info for working on a ship!
      Thanks again for watching!

I have 4 years of theatre from school but no extra experience, so thank you for mentioning the odd jobs to build a resume. Going to be applying in the fall and not giving up on my new dream! My one big concern is I do have facial piercings and a visible tattoo.... would that cause any red flags during a possible audition in the future???

      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for watching and glad to hear you were on the Breeze! Its a great ship and each newer ship keeps getting better and better. As for the facial piercings, that may be a red flag depending on where they are and if they can be removed for work. As for the tattoos, same thing....can they be covered?

    • @Katieee014
      @Katieee014 Před 6 lety +2

      John Gleason as far as the piercing, it's just my nose so easy to remove, not a big deal. I do have a small tattoo on my arm, near the elbow. Could probably cover it with makeup?

      Hmm when asking about the cruise line jobs and why you are interested. You can be honest, just dont make it seem like the only reason you are doing it is for the travel. Some people like it cause there is literally no other job like it in the world. Its fast paced, challenging, you work with people from all over the world. You meet new people every week. The skills you learn are extremely beneficial in the after cruise life and many employers would love to have someone with that kind of drive!

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 7 lety +2

      Hmm. Well you can both apply for a job on a cruise line and if you come as a package then i believe you have a chance. I have seen couples come on as brand new employees. Not every job has access to guest areas to eat, but if you got on as a performer or a duo some cruise lines allow their entertainers to eat in the guest areas. But having a job that you can both get and both eat in the guest areas is a bit tough.
      Then if you do wind up on a ship that has Boston as a port (Most of the time its the Home port) Then you may be able to get off based on the rotation of the people needing to stay on. Its not guaranteed and you may not even be able to get on a ship that has Boston on its route. First contracts you do not generally get to pick.

      ChaoticGamester Thanks for watching! So regarding a degree and schooling and work on board. I know they mainly look at experience, but it also depends on what department/position you are looking to apply for. Some jobs do all the training on board and only require some background knowledge or at least some previous work experience. Other departments look for more experience/education. It will all depend. What were you looking to get involved with?
      Your grades may help when building your resume, but also think about what other work you have done or are currently doing that is parallel to the job you are applying for.
      Let me know if you have any other questions! Id be happy to help!

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 9 lety

      Katherine Sankey Thanks for watching and so awesome to hear you have applied! Hmm the best advice I can give you for interviews is be yourself. I know that sounds cliche, but you need to think about this as not only a Job, but a Job you technically will be living at. Also really focus on your background experience on anything regarding Youths and customer service. They will probably ask you about handling stressful situations and working in a fast paced environment. I would highly recommend answering honestly because if you sincerely feel you may not be able to handle the lifestyle, it would be a nice out for you. Just remember that it will be a whole different environment once you get on board, if you are up for the challenge let them know in your interview. They can tell who is passionate about delivering for their guests and who just wants a free ride and a party.
      I wish you so much luck and please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hey John, I'm sure it varies but for on board management positions like hotel manager, accounting,etc you work 7 days a week but is it more likely an 8 hour shift? Additionally, will you have free time in the ports?

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 9 lety +1

      Hey Patrick B From my experience at least with carnival, the on board management positions are usually working way more than the normal crew and staff positions. Me personally, as cruise director you are a department head of the Entertainment Department. You will work 7 days but you will pretty much be working all day. Having a cell phone you are easy to reach at all hours of the day.I would easily clock in 12-15 hour days (especially sea days). Then again it will depend on your management style. Some managers I have experienced will delegate all the undesirable tasks and whatnot and do as little work as possible. But if you want your ship to have excellent ratings you would be more involved and visible as often as possible. So its a mixture of guest area duties and office related things.
      As far as time off in the ports, yes and no. You will be able to get off the ship for ports, but only for a few hours. Some ports you may have longer time than others, but you may also have some work to catch up with or a nap.
      Let me know if this helps, and if you have any additional questions.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @JohnGleasonComedy
      @JohnGleasonComedy  Před 8 lety

      +Buhle Duma When you get hired as a crew member, they dont really allow you to bring anyone. If you are married and your partner wants to work as well...the both of you can apply and hopefully get hired at the same time. That has happened before. But as far as whole families go, that would not fly over to well.

    tiger haywood That is not a normal thing, asking for a picture copy of your passport. Yes there are scammers out there that also ask for money and such for employment too. Its weird, but its not uncommon for a cruise line to ask for a picture of yourself, just not your passport. Have you received any follow up from them since sending it to them?

      @lindamclaurin4239 Před 8 lety +1

      +tiger haywood yeah, be careful like what John mentioned! Make sure you actually visited Viking Cruises website. I saw one called Vikingrecruitment and that is a 3rd party recruitment partner of Viking.
      I doubt Viking (or any other US based cruise company) would ask for your photo (let alone passport) being an American company and all the anti-discrimination laws. I believe most other countries have photos on CVs. not here.
      I know recruiters do ask for your photo, but not your passport until you actually get a job.

      Jader Calero Hello Jader, and greetings in Nicaragua. I actually have known a few people from your country as well as from your part of the world. I dont think it was harder, its just a matter of finding the opportunity. The good thing with the cruise industry is there is so much turn over so they are ALWAYS looking for people to fill the jobs. The toughest part i found was finding a place to actually do the application where it felt like it was going somewhere. You just need to be patient, but persistant enough to keep at it. I dont believe any country has it harder....i am sure there may be a few exceptions but I know that people from Nicaragua have been working on ships for a while now.

Or you may apply as a F & B staff member as they have a nice collection of positions to work in and move up. I dont know about any height limit, although being really tall would only bring you discomfort. Knowing how to swim is also not needed, but if it made you feel better. Most of the time you will forget you are even at sea due to the size of the ship. its like a mini city.

      Your cruise line would be the one you apply for. As for ship, your first contract they send you wherever they need a person. As for Carnival and needing a host at the age of 18, they may post that but in reality they will need you to be 21 or older. You are more than welcomed to apply and if your background and experience is amazing, they may pull some strings. But i do know 21 is the minimum age they look at.

      hmm operations in events, that might not neccesarily be in entertainment. Unless you work shoreside. They dont really have any event managers on the ships, just activities and shows. In the land based jobs, they would probably have some of the event related job.

      john Tek Hey John! Thanks for watching, so you have your fitness instructor certification. I know most of the Spa/Fitness jobs on ships are done through a company called Steiner. They train and send their people to the ships they have contracts with. I know they personally work with Carnival and Princess and my assumption would be any cruise line within Carnival Corporation. With them i know they train and send the people to the ships with the only experience being their training.
      My first advice would be to find out if there is a company that you could get into that hires people in your field for cruise ships. Maybe with your already existing certs, you just have to take a quick class to get used to their marketing strategies. That is a good starting point if you ask me!
      Let me know if there is anything else i can help you with!

      You can apply as a kitchen cleaner, anything pretty much in the galley. Its hard and dirty work but you would need to work your way up depending on what you want to do in the end
