  • In 2014, our Great Decisions episode presented Brazil as a country full of hope, both as an economic powerhouse but also as a strong democracy with an important role to play in international affairs.
Fast-forward to today's corruption scandals that served as a catalyst for the dual political and economic crisis and the country is unrecognizable.
From 2014: "Brazil is the “B” in the acronym BRICS, five emerging economies once seen as soon-to-be superpowers. After economic troubles in the 1990s, Brazil has risen to new global prominence-drawing in more investment, working on global issues ranging from climate change to peacekeeping, and even hosting the 2016 Olympics."

Steve Minor Are we stupid because we are the friendliest people on the planet? If you go to Brazil one day. You will be very well received by the Brazilians. you will see smiles everywhere. and when you leave, go with the certainty that the Brazilian people are the happiest and most welcoming people in the world. we have no prejudice with any nationality. and any foreigner who visits our country is always welcome! unlike many other nationalities. who do not like foreigners in the country and are very arrogant with visitors. So if this is being "stupid". I prefer to be "stupid"

This hand is not that hidden: it is our cronical ineptitude of handling our own problems. And one of it's traces is our tendency to blame other nations and peoples for our own incompetence.

I find Southern American as the land of the extreme. Especially their economic model. When the economy used the protectionist measure, it was extremely protectionist. When it adopted the open economy model, it is too open and too much privatization that it brings disastrous consequences. And some even experimented with Socialism and went too far too generous, that when the commodity boom ended, people dont have food to eat.

the Brazilian economy was a star model for all developing countries during the 60s and 70s. The Latin American Debt crisis did some damage to the region and in came those Brady Bonds. It looks partly American and partly like Kabul...especially those hill top terraced houses (FAVELA).

    Interesting documentary.
As I see, there might me some propaganda in this content. But regardless... can somebody tell me more about the rellitiy?
    - in which direction is now going Brazil? Is it now, in 2018, getting any better? is it worse or better that it was 10, or 20 years ago?
    - is there really an increased presence of European and north American companies? how about the export, compared to several years ago?
    - how about the "growing regional and international presence" mentioned in this documentary? any truth here?
    Thank you for your answers!

Unfortunetly this is a leftist american propaganda over Brazil to influence the 2018 ellections. Left party that financed a lot of media in USA with public money by 2012 to 2016 (this doc years), but now some of them are getting in jail for billions in corruption here. One of many of its kind spread across youtube.
-As the right party won here, first thing Brazil is focused on economic regains of growth. Then foreign trade.
-We have no more decussions about military power, this is past. One question: Do military dictatiorships just hand over power back as the doc demonstrated? Nowhere on earth it happened. Cause it wasn't really military dictatorship. In 60's USSR was financing all types of guerrilla wars here in South America. The population had conciousness what communist wanted here was a worse dictatorship. Chile, Brazil and Peru were the only nation to stand agains USSR money here in SA. Guess witch are the bigger economies here in SA now?
-Yes there is an increase presence of Eropean and NA coo. Due to our focus on openning more the economy. But, depending on the market, it's a high cost of entrance, as some national companies already dominates. Citizens allways prefere more foreigh coo to decrease market prices here.
-About regional presence. Brazil had the left wing leadership when SA was rulled by the left. And now, on the more right wing gov on continent, also Brazil is leading.
-About international, our fellings are that we only do international presence on economics and ecological topics.

As a Brazilian expat for the past 20 years and counting , Brazil is far from going to the right direction , is like they give one step forward and 3 steps back , corruption have always slowed down growth and progression , it's 2021 and Brazilian government is one of the most corrupts in the world , shown on the video you see a lot of protestants wearing red colored clothes and flags as a sign of socialism , PT ( worker party) was the most corrupt party ever that done a lot of embezzlement and money laundering , most of our people are very patriotic and we want to grow economically and become a superpowers of the world , but rampant corruption is the biggest impediment ahead of us , we're still dreamers that one day we can go back home to a more prosperous place

brazil would fail if there wasn't investment. The US will always try to stabilize the Americas, but this may not be at the benefit of south America and the rest of the world. This will culminate in Mexico becoming a huge power and brazil might have to take a back seat. it'll be power but will clash with Argentina

@@escstudios2068 there are many problems, even though we have plenty of natural resources, this doesn't benefit large sectors of society, but the main problem is the lack of education. Solid, basic education. This is a perverse mechanism of poverty maintenance and reproduction, and can't be reverted in the short term. It takes generations to fix such an issue.
