    Nice video. My mom during the early to mid 1960's used to do some volunteer work (I think for the town) and she would type a bunch of letters out and would use her Hectograph printer to make copies. A blast from the past. Thank you.

    Fascinating process. We had one teacher who was still using one of these even though everyone else was using a photocopier. Seeing how much work this is compared to a Xerox machine, I have absolutely no idea why he kept doing that.

      Thanks for your comment. I have owned a hectograph printer since I was about 6 years old. A real fun duplicator. Very inexpensive to make and to operate. No mess, Quick copies. Makes greeting cards on cardstock in multi-colors at one time. I have information available if you would like to make your own hectograph with instructions and pictures. Cheap to make. Lasts a long time and is renewable. I an selling NEW UNUSED HECTOGRAPHS ON EBAYS THAT ARE PORTABLE AND SELFCONTAINED. AS WELL AS A BASIC HECTOGRAPH. Both come with carbon sheets in purple and colors so you can make a greeting card. along with formulas I will give to the company that makes the ink in colors already made. • @SamKeller1954
      @SamKeller1954  Před 6 lety +4

      The Hectograph really has no smell. What use to smell were spirit duplicator copies which used methyl alcohol (methanol) as a copy fluid. It's really just 200 proof alcohol that they add a little poison to so they won't have to pay an alcohol beverage tax. We all smelled the damp copies the teacher just ran off on the spirit duplicator which was invented in 1923 by Wilhelm Ritzerfeld. People today still long for that smell. I rebuilt and sold an early 30's duplicator. One on the first duplicators that flipped the copy over so the printed side was up. I just was given the same machine used by a church and the mans Dad rebuilt it 20 years ago and it runs like a top. Really overbuilt! I have a demo of it on here. Thanks, Sam

      That's just what the teachers did back then.What a fond memory to have. They make hectograph pencils you can just write on paper with and make several (20 or so) copies. no carbon paper needed. Good for writing restaurant specials on a card and make 10 or more copies. OR note for a club. or just a few quick copies.

    When I was at school over 50 years ago I got a book from the library that had lots of science experiments and it told you how to make one of these using gelatine and a special ink. (I never heard of the word hectograph until today.) Anyway, I got the ink and gelatine but it didn't work, to my great disappointment. That was the thing with those books, the experiments sounded real cool, but getting them to work was another thing. I think they gave me a bum steer with the ink. Or maybe I didn't leave the paper on long enough, but as far as I remember there was no mention of how long to leave the paper on, or about wiping the gelatine first with damp tissue.

    • @SamKeller1954

      NO they are not printed on fax paper. But on some thermal telephone fax machines you can print thermal master units in several colors or buy for around $100. a thermal TATTOO printer. I use the tattoo printer and also a dot matrix printer for the regular writing long run masters. I sell Hectograph kits for $10.00 including the gelatin all made. REMEMBER: THE HECTOGRAPH MASTER IS READABLE BUT WRITTEN WITH HECTO INK. SPIRIT DUPLICATOR MASTER WRITTEN REGULAR BUT THE "CARBON" PAPER IS FACE UP TO PRINT ON THE BACK OF THE SHEET YOUR WRITING ON AND WHEN TURNED OVER IS NOT READABLE. YOU CAN PHOTOCOPY A HECTOGRAPH SCHOOLBOOK BECAUSE IT IS A REGULAR PRINTED PAGE WITH WRITING AND PICTURES. A SPIRIT MASTER SCHOOLBOOK IS NOT ABLE TO BE COPIED ON THE PRINTING SIDE ..

  • @rarbiart
    @rarbiart Před 6 lety +1

    2:15 You got it wrong. Printing (with the typewriter etc) has to be done on the white side of the master, so that the ink is taken up mirrored.
    Since it's mirrored again during printing process in the machine.

    • @SamKeller1954
      @SamKeller1954  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm sorry but you have it wrong. The finished master to be used on the hectograph should be right side up and completely readable. Not the same as with spirit duplicating. That is a direct process.

    • @SamKeller1954
      @SamKeller1954  Před 5 lety

      They also sold typewriter ribbons made with hectograph ink so you could just type your letter that you wanted to make copies from. NOT REVERSED. (spirit duplicatiion is REVERSED) I'm positive I made that mistake ONCE. I have had a Hectograph since I was 6 years old. and I have one today. Qick and easy. No mess. Cheaper that inkjet.

    How do you print with other colors?

    • @SamKeller1954
      @SamKeller1954  Před 6 lety +3

      Use different color masters and drawing what you want.. Carbon on top so when your done the master is right faced up and readable. The same with the hecto pencil. you just write and then lay it on the gel and then remove and put a clean piece of paper on top and peel off. You will have a perfect copy. I know from which I speak. For sure.

    • @SamKeller1954

      They still make blue but blue fades after several copies and gets light blue. Black doesn't stay dark it turns light gray.green turns mint green. red turns pink. purple is the only long lasting color, thats why it's the standard shade.

Great for things lie SPECIALS in a restaurant. Just write on one card and make 25 copies of it. quick and easy. The Hectograph was the only printing deviceIt is safe andnon toxic(usually)used everywhere from the 1800s tothe early 60s. There were no copiers like today.. It is very inexpensive to make a copy and you can make it in 5 colors all at one time. The toner in a laser or powder copier is toxic and a carcinogen. And if you want to save money you refill the toner. very messy. Originally the hectograph was used to copy checks. You would write the check wsith a hectograph pencil and make a copy of it right then and there.>It cost pennies as opposed to 7 cents a copy.My Canon laser copier was cheap $300. but I didn't know it would cost $500 to replace the color toners cartridges.With Canon cartridges. I cant afford that so I use a generic and save some money there.
      Youi can make newsletters, gretting cards, menu specials quicly and easily with pencils for ther hectograsph. i have the m in many colors morethan 5.It great for kids.and they make a version of it called a JELLYPAD. wherethey use paint, ink ,anddifferent items on the pad the put paper on the gel and make a uique paepr. pardon my typing the keyboard isn't working just right.
