They can quickly change shape and move around the cell when needed.
When the cell needs more energy, the mitochondria can reproduce by growing larger and then dividing. If the cell needs less energy, some mitochondria will die or become inactive.

Mitochondria is the power house of the cell. It is the powerhouse of the cell because it produces molecules which are useable forms of energy. The energy in food is not in a form that can be used so the enzymes in the mitochondria convert these molecules into useable molecules called Adenosine Triphosphate it is abbreviated as ATP.
The mitochondria has two membranes the outer membrane and the inner membrane.
The outer membrane is porous which means it allows the transport of materials across itself.
The inner membrane is thrown into several folds and therefore has a larger surface area. These folds are referred to as crisTAE. A larger surface area would be a wider base for ATP generating chemical reactions. The larger area will harbour more enzymes that will produce ATP. The inner part of this membrane has a matrix which contains all the necessary enzymes for ATP production. Thus larger the surface area larger will be the amount of ATP molecules generated.
Apart from this mitochondria has it's own DNA and ribosomes like the nucleus. Therefore mitochondria can make proteins and replicate on its own. This means it makes it's own copies independently.

    Some interesting information about Mitochondria:
Mitochondria, often referred to as the “powerhouses of the cell”, were first discovered in 1857 by physiologist Albert von Kolliker, and later coined “bioblasts” (life germs) by Richard Altman in 1886. The organelles were then renamed “mitochondria” by Carl Benda twelve years later.
