Orbitrol is a type of valve block used to supplying or guiding oil flow to the hydraulic steering mechanism. JCB machines have hydraulically operated power steering; the orbitrol is heart of this steering mechanism.

Hello , I have serviced these several times , particularly on tractors with front - end loaders fitted , as the usual chain of events is that somebody turns the steering wheel while the machine is stationary , & the engine running at fast tickover , this causes an almighty build - up of hydraulic pressure in the "live " side of the circuitry , which finds the easiest way out , straight through the valve body top seal & kin - ring pack & then all over your cab floor !
Usually the replacement seal kit costs about £15 to £20 here in England , but you will have "one extremely hard time " fitting the new seal kit into the top of the valve body without the correct special tool kit for your series of valve , as it fits in quite tightly , & you can,t get at it to cobble it as it,s right up in the top of the valve bore .
Also the parts of these valves are very finely machined & matched , it is imperative to keep them scrupulously clean & in exactly the original position , orientation & order , failure to achieve this will render the valve disfunctional on refitting .
I,ve got the Churchill tool kit for my series of valves , can somebody tell me on here what SIMPLE video camera with a very good lens to look out for , as next time I do one I,ll try to video the proceedings & post it . I have an heavy eastern england accent , people think I,m Australian but I,m not , so stick with it for my voiceover ! I,ve been doing these seal kits since approx 1982 . Please note ; Churchill special tools still exist as part of The Sealed Power Corporation , near Northampton , England , buy your tool kits from them , to suit , as I did . Don,t copy mine , you will infringe patents , & these things are exceptionally finely machined , so they would not work if you did . Work out what you,ve got & phone SPX .
    Happy Spanners !

If you are taking one apart make sure to mark the parts according to the original alignment. Or else you will have to make a total mess and take it apart many times to figure out the alignment. The unit i took apart did not work properly unless it was in its original alignment.

you have left out important points, the inner spool can be assembled in 2 positions, with a shift of 180 degrees ,in respect to outer spool. If assembled in wrong position ,the steering jams ,when u turn left. And the gerotor in some models, has a correct position in respect to the needle pin.

El Mero Mero things that cause it,
1)the plate springs holding the outer spool position, to the inner spool are faulty.
2)The steering cylinder seals or tube is damaged.
      3) The slots on the inner spool is clogged.
      4) The steering column bearings are damaged.
      5) The rubber coupling between the steering column rod and orbitrol is damaged.

For Anne Svendby with the MB Trac ; I have not seen the steering valve in an MB Trac , but if it looks just like this one , then you have to get it right out , scrupulously clean on the bench , & I,m sorry but the only way to get the seal arrangement out completely is to reference mark all the components at the bottom of the valve block , as this lot encompasses a manually turned pump that will provide " some " steering power if your engine ends up dead on the road , or if you are trying to pull - start it , this includes all the bolts , as at least one is a special bolt that retains a ball bearing in an oil port , mark it all , everything must go back where it came from ! strip off the bottom of the valve , then very carefully tap out the valve core & sleeve assembly with a wooden tool , take your time , the valve core will fall straight out of it,s sleeve if not handled with caution , & there is a con - rod arrangement inside it being driven by a cross - pin that operates the manually turned pump mentioned earlier , through a simple leaf spring arrangement , this is what gives the steering wheel it,s propensity to spring back to neutral , the tool to fit it all back together comprises a highly accurately machined steel sleeve that plugs into the central hole in the valve body , a plunger that looks a bit like a steel mushroom , with a plastic cap that dowels onto it,s top , this cap carries the lubricated & assembled kin ring & internal O ring assembly , & having fitted the outer , top single lip seal first , ( lip facing outwards , it just keeps the muck out , ) you locate the plunger into the bore , with the sleeve inserted first & dripping in oil , then stand the lot upright on the plunger,s substantial base , & snap it down centrally & firmly into place , withdraw the plunger , & tool sleeve , leaving the plastic cap in place in the top of the valve body , it is holding the kin ring & O ring in place , fit the valve sleeve & core assembly back in , then doing this will push the plastic cap out , reassemble the valve body pump etc , refit . ( YOU OF COURSE USE A NEW SEAL KIT FOR ALL THIS ! ) The golden rule is to mark everything first , before dis-assembly , the tool part number here in England for this is V.L. Churchill MS 62/1 , MS62/2 & MS 63 , I only live a few miles frm the old churchill factory , but they seem to have disappeared , if you can find them again I,d like to know where they are , someone mentioned Blisworth or Brixworth , Northamptonshire , but as yet , no joy . This company,s tools are / were the very best . Be warned , different machine makers may use different sizes of components that look just the same until measured , then you find out the expensive tools you just bought don,t fit , I suggest you contact your local Agricultural College machinery dept for advice , as they sometimes " use " projects like this to train students on , & may already have the tools .For M B Trac knowledge I would look to Lincolnshire or East Anglia , a great old mate I haven,t seen for years went to work for a company called Townshends of Threekingham & Metheringham , Lincolnshire , they were Mercedes agents , his name ; Richard ( Dick ) Bradshaw , he was the red hot storeman who supplied me with many Leyland tractor bits from Stamford ( Power Farming , now gone ) in the 1990,s , great bloke ! Best Regards & Happy Spanners ! .

If I might add... also, gear pumps are the most common type for most transportation applications. They can deliver high flow, maintain high pressure and accept harsher operational conditions than larger piston, screw or vein pumps for similar or less money. Also, they are cheaper/ simpler to fix compared to most

God bless if some one install like this. Because this assembly has a timing and if it is mis matched steering will not work right and if it is off from a articulated machine, one could be killed if he stand articulating area.

For the pump/assistance to work the inner spool must push against the centering spring to allow the respective ports to open and allow fluid to flow to left or right cylinder you do not explain what holds the outer spool against the effort applied to the inner spool to align the spool ports for this to occur - otherwise the two spools will just keep rotating together and fluid will be dumped back to the tank without any assistance.
