Thanks again and thanks more for NOT having music … anywhere, anytime. As a former teacher, I would never play music while teaching - it’s distracting and often too loud and you can’t hear the tutorial. So, thanks!
👍🏻😊
Not starting sentences with “OK…so…” would also be a nice ice touch 😉
Have you been watching Vinh Giang ?????ha ha🎉
Used to teach..why add distraction and interference to get the point across 🎉❤😂 retired 😊
I agree
Thanks so much for explaining how to use the gel plate in a non craft way. I've been desperate to find a more painterly way. This is brilliant!
Thanks. Glad you found it helpful.
This is great.I'm healing from hip surgery watching these gel tuts. Can't wait to start doing this.
Thanks, glad it’s helping you pass the time! Hope you recover soon!
I love to see creative people using the gel plate to produce real Fine Art rather than Artsy/Crafty work.
Not that there is anything wrong with hobby type gel plate printing but, there is so much more potential for serious work.
Agreed!
Love how you start with all the supplies! Wonderful techniques, thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Glad you like it.
Use discovered your first video and wanted more! The benefit of the image being reversed on your plate is that your print will be the ‘right way round. Direct of the plate techniques give a reverse. Love your techniques, and how clearly you explain them. I was convinced when I first saw gel plates that they would be very versatile, but first attempts were challenging! I never wanted to use a lot of bought stencils rather my own mark making. Thankfully there are other artists out there. Thankyou. Your piece is fantastic, and your narration of how you made your choices just spot on. I will have to rewatch the cornflower resist method, just got news of a terrible hurricane where I have friends.
Yes like you I’m not interested in the bought stencil side of things and I’m not interested in journaling either so my approach has always been in the directing of creating actual art prints rather than just making collage and backing paper stuff. I hope your friends are safe and well. Mine is a new channel so I’ll be trying to upload more content soon. Thanks for watching.
@@gelwithmark it will be a while before we know, I think. They are in Little Rock which has pretty much had a major disaster and all power lines seem to be out. I got back to see your corn flower resist, amazingbresult, mand the overall colours are fantastic. Clowns are rather spooky in general aren’t they? So,I think you caught that well… I particularly liked the way you got a clean pull at the end. I have been leaving things for longer time and till they felt drier, as My plate seems to do better that way, and feel drier paper leaves fewer tears. You have many layers of paint etc and still manage 5he pull, and basically you are using a similar technique to artists who painted on glass in the past, but there’s a greater chance what you do will survive because you have better materials. They were every bit as skilled as artists working in oils, but support was so fragile in every way. The back to front method also reminds me of the celluloid miniatures of the 19th century, every tiny highlight and detail painted first, I enjoy the fact that such techniques have morphed into contemporary expression! And of course that your original drawings can be reused and reworked if you want. Thanks for packing so much in…. And for sharing it all.
Thanks Mark. I’ve watched this several times over the months, never really making any sense to me initially. As my own experience has increased then my understanding of your video becomes more clear. You are a gifted artist and have communicated your methods brilliantly. Look forward to more of your work.
Thanks. Glad it’s starting to make a bit more sense for you.
Hello Mark,Thank you for this upcaled level of art using gel printing!!I m so glad yt algorithmes found you...very few great artists share their skills (like"yeates makes" does too) 🎉hope to see more of you soon .bye .Do in Paris🗼😉💫🙏👋
Thank you. I agree Yeates makes is amazing, watching and learning from his videos helped me a lot when I first started doing gel printing.
Brilliant Mark and thank you so much for sharing
Stay safe 😊
Very welcome
Brilliant! I love the way you chose a freaky clown face as your ‘happy’ face! Lol
Thanks. I do love a clown! 🤡
All clowns are sinister.
@@fruitlessbeast yeah I suppose so, sinister is cool though!
So helpful to see the whole process from start to finish. Placing the layers in backwards order is rather a workout for the mind when one is used to the other way around. Thanks.
It’s fairly straightforward once you get your head used to thinking that way. 😊
Great work !! So happy, another artist makes serious great work of exploring the possibillities of the gelplate. Beatiful and scary clown.
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for sharing this! Amazing work, so inspiring. I am totally starstruck!
You are so welcome!
These are exciting new techniques, can hardly wait to try them. Thanks for such a clear demonstration.
You are so welcome!
You are really on another dimension of pushing the creative Gelli plate boundaries!! Brilliant work and so well explained. Thank you so much 🤗
Thank you for your kind comments, they mean a lot.
Hate clowns, love the video! Well done 😊
I knew the image choice would split the pack! 🤣
Thank you! Your lessons on gel plates are unique. I want to try it. I get confused a little about getting the paints in the right order. I've always thought white would be the last to put on, but you used the yellow ochre.
Thanks. The last colour depends on the look that I want to achieve really. You have to think of it in terms of what you put down first will be at the forefront of your image. Once you have that in mind it’s pretty straightforward when it comes to your ordering.
BRILLIANT !!!!!!!
Thank you.
I love your video !!! That is so great easy ... and I didnt had this idea by my self... 😢😂❤
Thanks, glad you like it. 👍🏻
Great new channell abd inspiring tutorial
Thanks glad you like it.
That is so cool, and I would have gone for the exact same image, I love it! I can't wait to give these techniques a try, I've tried almost every medium on the gel plate accept for charcoal. Thanku for sharing it turned out great!
Thank you. I will say that since doing this video I’ve tried this technique quite a lot and I feel you can get better tonal values if you draw your image onto paper rather than tracing paper as you can build your layers of charcoal up more on the paper. Try both tracing paper and paper and see what you think.
Fantastic result! Love the cornstarch grunge. Looking forward to your colour-mixing video! Thanks!
Thanks so much 😊
Merci beaucoup d'ouvrir grandement les possibilités de la plaque de gel ! je vais tester cela en urgence !
Avec plaisir 😊
Wow, so glad I found you, this was a great demo! Very informative, thanks so much.

Go for it!
I'm so inspired, Thank You!
You are so welcome!
WOW!! What a pull!! Got my heart pounding a bit LOL
😂
C’est le top de tout ce que j’ai vu à date sur l’a gel près! Vraiment Bravo!
Oh merci beaucoup !
Not much into clowns representation 🤡 personally but your mixed technique (charcoal transfer + texturing and layering with corn starch) is invaluable and opens so many doors for cool creativity! Love it 🥰 and thanks again so much for sharing! ❤ Looking forward to your colour harmony vid!!
Thanks. Yes, I know the clown topic divides the pack!
Nice work!! thanks for sharing!

Been waiting patiently since your first video Mark!Done a few of my own drawings with your charcoal method, much more satisfying than printing from magazines, not that I have had any success with that but understand that it’s a very hit and miss method!Cant wait to try your painting tutorial, you’ve done an amazing job with your clown,I’m so impressed and a little scared at having a go myself lol!Going to be a lot of pausing the video to take it in!!Thanks for sharing, intrigued to see what you do next!👏🏻❤️
Thank you. My advice just play and have fun, if it doesn’t quite work the first time don’t worry as it doesn’t matter, you can always try again, but I’m sure you’ll nail it 1st time. 🙂👍🏻

Hi from England. Thanks you, glad you liked it. I’m
Brilliant and very innovative
Thanks a lot
great process , I will be trying charcoal on my plate 😊
Cool. Let me know how you get on! 👍🏻
If you end up with some paint on the plate, is that because I haven't left it to dry long enough! I use Snowden printing paper which is 300gsm. This video was brilliant btw❤
I think with small amounts of paint left on the plate, can be attributed to a few things, yes it might be that it just needed a touch longer to dry, it could also come down to in that particular area it may have been applied a bit thinner and actually dried a bit quicker before the paper went down, do you add a weight to the top after the paper is down? If not the paper may not have been fully in contact with those areas, is your paper slightly textured, that could have a slight impact too! I sometimes get a few small areas that seem to grab and hold onto the plate. If when I’m pulling and I notice in time, I can sometimes prevent the rip by simply changing the direction of the pull. Also I now pull the plate from the paper instead of the paper from the plate, that way I can see more quickly if I’m having parts sticking. Hope that helps.
Absolutely remarkable! Thankyou so much! I just got my first gell plate yesterday endless things to do.
Congratulations. Experiment, experiment, experiment is my advice. 🙂
nice job..ok I asked a question in your chrcoal pull video,it has been answered in this one.. 🙂
I’m sorry I must have missed your question, I do try and reply to all my messages, so I’m sorry again.
I really enjoyed this techn. It's something I would like to try. I'm glad I found your channel. New subscriber.
Thanks. 🙂
Your two tutorials on Gel Printing have been very informative and very well put together; along with the great narrative. Please can you tell me which is the best and safest method of cleaning the gel plate without damaging the gel plate surface. Thanks.
I mainly use baby wipes but for more stubborn stains I put a good few drops of mineral oil onto my plate give it a good massage with my fingers then leave it a few minutes or so then wipe it off with a soft cloth and that generally does the trick, if I still have staining I just repeat the oil application and do it again. Hope that helps.
Hand sanitizer also cleans the plate safely and very well.
@@janc6495 thanks, good to know.
Chinagraph pencils work fantastic as a resist. You can also apply it or oil-pastel to the reverse of your sheet, then do an embossed transfer on various surfaces.
Yes I’ve tried these techniques before that you mention. 👍🏻
So I am a subscriber and appreciate your instruction. For the resist layer are u using corn flour or corn starch? Are u using Charcole or pastel pencil? Are with the final pull u are not burnishing the image just weighting it before the final pull ?
Thank you for subscribing, I appreciate it.
Depending on where you live, here in the UK it is known as corn flour but if you are in the US it is known as corn starch or you can also use baby powder, it all works the same way.
I am using both pure willow charcoal as well as a soft pastel pencil.
I don’t burnish, that’s not saying you can’t, I just give it a brief rub over with my hands just to make sure there is contact all over with the plate and then I put 3 big heavy books on top and leave it like that for a good few hour.
Wauw
😊
Love your work and all the ideas. Your commentary over the video is great - all useful and no waffle!
Why did you add the layer of gel medium? I noticed you didn't in your first video.
I used the gel medium to pull the print as the layers had dried on the plate compared to the first video whereby I did the charcoal transfer then I just pulled with one layer of colour. You always need a wet layer to pull the print whether that is acrylic or medium.
Enjoyed this video. However, I had no idea why you painted the details and then painted over them with patches of different colours. Anyway, guess I need to find videos on gel printing for beginners! Looking forward to the colour harmony video. Thanks again, so fun to watch!
The way I work on the gel plate is in a reverse method because I like to just pull the whole image in one go, instead of pulling each individual layer so because of this I have to work backwards meaning the first marks that I put onto the gel plate ie the details, is what will be on the top of the stack of layers on the finished print so to speak. It may be easier to think of it like making a homemade pizza, normally you have the pizza base then you add the sauce then the cheese then the toppings right? But we are making something upside down, in a sense, so you would 1st put the toppings down on the backing tray then add the cheese then the sauce and finally the base. Does that make more sense in the mind?? Let me know
So then when you flip it back over the pizza is in the right layered order.
I love the artwork but it is true, he could be seen as a bit sinister. But then, the art takes the artist wherever it wants to go😀
Sure does!
you really have a wonderful technique ----thank you so much for sharing---so many possiblities!!! I'm not sure that I understand the use of cornstarch---is it for effect?????
Thanks. Yes the cornstarch causes the patchy grungy background as it resists in different areas of each colour layer added.
Oh wait! When you “pulled” the paper, the penny dropped how the layers work! Haha
