    I believe that every book, and every practice isn't for everyone. It doesn't have to be, and that's okay. I've read her other books, "Code Red", and "Love Your Lady Landscape", and I'm not positive, but I'm sure she's recieved the critiques on this particular book because she ends up addressing the fact that just because you have a womb doesn't mean that you are a woman, and vice versa, in these works. I believe she could have saved alot of trouble if she wouldn't have been so blatantly "unapologetic" about excluding a whole handful of people in "Witch". A quick statement in the beginning that says something to the lines of "hey, this work is going to be focused on women with wombs, if you don't identify than there are other better books out there, but this is how I relate to my personal craft." Instead she came off very tone deaf to the needs of other communities in that opening statement.

    Thank you so much for the inclusive words you’ve said. I am a trans woman and this book has been recommended to me in the past, but I never felt “called” to read it 😂 Thanks for sparing me the experience of reading another exclusionary book. Also I admire your intelligence and how articulate you are when you speak 👍

    I don’t understand this Terf logic of “I’m a cis woman so it’s cool for me to trample all over survivor/victims like this”.
    It’s just another person using my organs in a way I never consented to so nope. No thank you. Every time someone uses transphobia and what so many of us have lived through in the same sentence, the scorched remains of my (non-menstrual) blood just boil a tiny little bit more.
    And Kali Maa….as a white woman, I’m not the best voice for this (clearly). The whole way we’re going about this is embarrassing, we’re doing this in a very colonial round 2 way, and is yet another example of when we need to stfu and listen to people for whom this is part of their testament and their story.
    Basically, your rant review was amazing, and you’re honestly and openly talking about stuff which appears to be hinted at or…suspiciously missing when you look for it. Thank you 🤲

    Omg I grabbed this book because the cover looked cute. Like you, just a few pages in I was like...wait minute, is this a terf? The part where she talks about sitting in an LA cafe with the "Holy Freakin' Trinity of modern-day witches" and one of them is the author of a book about the pill that's full of misinformation is what sent me to Google to see if I was being too critical but.. yeah, it seems like trash. Plus also yeah, in addition to the deeply problematic stuff, the writing style is just soooo obnoxious.

    Fantastic review! Im also in the process of reading this, though fortunately I snagged it from my local library so no money was spent. One thing I’d also like to highlight, coming from a history student: the whole history chapter is incredibly irresponsible, in that she has little to no sources cited and the claims she makes are often times inaccurate or a misconstruction of the facts. If you’re going to make historical claims, you need to have sources cited or else none of the information there is worth almost anything. I understand that this book was not an academic text, but I’ve read a myriad of witchcraft books over the course of my craft and many of them have footnotes and a bibliography.

    I often cringe at the English word "witch"... whether it is in contemporary context or historical, as it is very Eurocentric and ends up projecting this. One recent example is Disney's use of this term to reference a character in the recent live action Mulan... despite the fact that there is not equivalent concept in East Asian culture... not to say that women weren't persecuted, it just doesn't fit the context and ultimately is a Eurocentric reimagining that rests upon a history of colonialism etc.

      side note: calling it out doesn't - speaking as a trans person - feel out of place... just saying. It's all in the delivery and the delivery is cool!

      @HeyItsShey  Před 3 lety +3

      I haven't seen the Mulan remake yet, but thanks for this insight! I'm pretty sure every occult/Wiccan book I've read at this point has been by a white author, so I'm not surprised at the eurocentric projections of the label. This is a good reminder that I need diversify my nonfiction reads.

    Great review. I am a cis white dude but I am from this religious/spiritual community and unfortunately this kind of current within the community is not new. The Spiral Dance by Starhawk has been in print since 1979 and has alot of the same issues. The version still in print is the 20th anniversary edition and the blatant misandry apparently has been toned down but the original and the 10th anniversary version (which I own) are still pretty bad. And all version perpetuate alot of the same Margaret Murray bullshit pseudo anthropology claims that were debunked decades ago. As for the idea of a lineage in the community that is often used as a flex and to imply implicit authority on something. And yikes the idea of intuitive herbalism is terrifying. I mean sure if you have a background in herbalism or mycology sure then you can safely wing it sometimes when you know what won't kill you but sending that out to the general public is scary. At least Starhawk had the excuse that most of what she is known for was written in 1979. Not sure what the excuse can be for this kind of nonsense now.

      @@HeyItsShey Your views are confused and sexist, the distillation of witchcraft and wicca is spirituality as practiced by women, no one else, perhaps the "inclusive" term your looking for is paganism and organized patriachial world religions. The gender identity idea is its self a white western imposition. Good day.

    SHE IS TALKING ABOUT HONOURING YOUR DIVINE FEMININE ENERGY. her intention isn't to be exclusive. she is inviting all people to connect with their divine feminine energy, but she uses the word SHE to describe this energy. she is using the true word to describe YIN energy (female.) the book is about the reawakening of feminine power - we really live in a society where if you talk about female energy or use the word 'she' it's horrible. people need to stop being so offended.
    you are clearly uncomfortable with your own feminine power if reading words like 'womb' and 'uterus' upset you. i hope you heal your that wound and can learn how to connect with your female power without feeling uncomfortable xx

    Wicca and witch craft are totally separate I think that it is completely reasonable for you to dislike her writing style but her discussions sounding so personal is because witchcraft itself is very personal. Also just because things are intertwined does not mean that a person can not pull bits and pieces from things as she likes. It almost seems that the very reason you dislike her writing ( strong one sided opinions…) are the same methods you are using to explain why you don’t like the book. You think that she shouldn’t pull from things without a lot of studying first you are uncomfortable with her not choosing to be more inclusive… but that is a huge part of eclectic witchcraft you have the right and freedom to walk your own path and that’s is what she shared in her book her path not a how to for all but a how she does with some tips suggestions and helpful info. You are not wrong to dislike this book I don’t agree with everything I just feel like there was unclear understanding about Wicca and witchcraft and the purpose of the book

    Taking the review of another of Lisa's books Love Your Lady landscape and putting them here for some balanced commentary: "I love Lisa. It’s true that as a queer person and as a queer person with a host of non-binary loves, that she doesn’t always speak for us. That’s okay. I see a lot of folks getting burnt because she doesn’t speak for them. It’s okay. She’s speaking from her lived experience. If you feel some kind of way, like you’re underrepresented in her work, that’s just you being called to write. So don’t throw shade at Lisa! Just sit down and write that thing so we can see you more clearly!"
