Segment on US Fest, Jerry talks to Sam Donaldson about Woodstock. And Sam likes Da Doo Doo. Sorry about the quality, I came across this while clearing out VHS tapes & didn't see posted yet
So courteous of Commander Spock to take time out of his space adventures to interview these legendary musicians. Putting his foot in his mouth as usual due to his lack of emotion but you can see how hard he tried.
Some of my fondest and foggiest memories are Sting opening for the Dead and as a kid seeing The Police in a field next to my uncle's farm in what is now the suburban sprawl outside of Toronto.
Exactly. Asking about Woodstock in 82. Anyone who reads a bit about the Dead knows that their Woodstock show was not their best. He could’ve asked about many other concerts
I love how Sting is backstage at the US Fest and Talking Heads are playing their set in the background. Another neat thing to think about is that although not as extensively as the Dead-who ever did in their singular way-The Police improvised plenty onstage themselves…especially Copeland.
There are lots of downsides of social media, but this is a fantastic example of the best of it (and the best of CZcams): discovering things I missed or uncovering hidden gems that would otherwise be lost to us all. Thanks for scanning this in and sharing!
British music ruled radio at this time and it was fun listening to all this music in the back of my parents car as a kid. Just a different time in America 🇺🇸
Sam Donald had no clue here. “Are you going to do your machine gun bit?” Sting: “What?” “Are you going to play Da da da Do do do?” Sting: laughs… Come on old man Donaldson.
Thank you for sharing this. I'm surprised by people making fun of Sam Donaldson. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have this interview. Also, Dead Heads and Sting/Police fans come from all walks of life. There was no reason to doubt Sam's opinions on music. I remember when us Dead Heads were respectful of others.
Sam Donaldson was one of the top professionals in the business, and here he seems out of touch and unprepared. A professional can't just make up a new name for his "favorite" song or the new movie starring his live interview subject. With general respect for Donaldson as a trained journalist and presenter, I expected more from him than I saw in this interview.
But that is the name of the song, "Do do do do, da da da da". I can see why Sam would like that song, ha! Sting said the lyrics are about the abuse of words. We all know Sam is a nerd anyway and I think the charm of this interview is the juxtaposition of the entertainers with the rigid news guys
Love it!! Jerry is ALWAYS gracious to interviewers, I’ve never seen his break from that. As far as Sam being square? We could use more squares I. Media. On the dark side, Jerry’s fingers are pretty black smudged.
You know people say that Jerry's fingers were covered in black tar heroine. It usually wasn't heroine. It was from his graphite guitar picks. I use the same ones. The more you play, the darker your fingers become. I was surprised to learn this; especially from first hand experience.
Jerry Garcia: For us… there’s some kind of a cultural relationship between what electronics, computers, and electronic games, and all that stuff, represents to the 80s.. it has a kind of, in a way it occupies the drug role, that drugs occupied in the 60s. It’s part of the, umm… fun part of life.
Sam lol!!!! I can't! Sting and Jerry are handling Sam very well because Sam's comments and questions are hilarious. He don't know what to ask. He was actually very close-minded towards Sting. Sting has had to deal with that a lot...to this day.
@@chrischandler5653 it was soooo awkward. Sam Doneldson was so very condescending. He was practically demanding Sting show himself to be an intelligent "respectable" person (which he was out of line to do). And you have to remember, Sting was not yet then the household name in the States that he is now. Then, he would have been (viewed as) just one of those so-called wild rock musician guys with not a lot going on in his head. Meanwhile, Sting had pre-stage antsy adrenaline going (and uh, frankly, I think a bit of "sniff sniff" had taken place 👀) and was not in a place to go head-to-head with Mr. conservative newscaster at that moment (although, watching it here again, I think he did a better job of it than I remembered). Just a cringeworthy mess.
@@ASparkleross Sting was just enjoying everything at this time I reckon with increasing popularity and the added snow dust. The interviewer was a bit of an old fashioned fuddy with his 'Dee do do dee da dee da da' comedy line. I think he might have had a line or two as well.
Jerry& Sting ended up playing together in 1993 a few times when Sting opened up for The Grateful Dead for eight shows that summer. It was very special &a dream of mine for years. I heard that they enjoyed hanging out a couple times in the hotel bars, once being in Chicago. Those conversations must have been mind blowing!
If I may quote Sam Donaldson, "Well now, you've improvised a lot...". . Lol, like telling Graucho Marx that he joked around a lot. Or that Mary Shelley scared a lot. Wish Jerry was still around to read that, and respond with his never-ending kindness. God rest his soul.

Comments about Sam Donaldson's cluelessness here are correct but Sam did seem genuinely interested in promoting the musicians and the music so he deserves credit for that.
Never seen this before - kinda funny to see Mr. Prim and Proper Sam Donaldson interviewing Sting. "Believe it or not, I've got your record..." Yeah sure Sam. Anything you say.
I graduated from high school 1982! We liked both and thought it was funny as fk when he called Jerry the Willie_Nelson of Rock & Jerry said thanks and giggles at the fool. Sting apparently thinks the questions are jokes as well.

I like how polite both Sting and Jerry are when responding to the idiocy of Sam Donaldson. Well mannered rock and rollers :)

So true. Sam is hilarious. He didn't know what to ask. They handle him very well.
@Jimmy Carolina - Man, I had the album and cassette. Playing Pitfall and King of Pain. What a weird time that was. The 80’s seemed so archaic
I thought the interviewer was cool . Showed them respect unlike lots of people to rockers back then
Jerry was always so witty and kind to even the most clueless interviewers... miss him and his wonderful playing.🙏🥲

Can you imagine him interviewing Miles Davis instead? Geez, rock had already been around for about 30 years at that point.
