Broad and Anderson have to go down as one of the all time great bowling pairs. Both did it for a ridiculous amount of time. Both were world class on their day…. But Jimmy was something special. The most impressive aspect is the consistency, we have had good bowlers since like Wood and Archer, but their bodies let them down. If they aren’t already they should be looking at his career in fine detail. How did he go so long and avoid significant injuries as well.

I've never seen a forced retirement work. It's always done for the wrong reasons. If Jimmy gets a fivefer then someone like Tongue comes in and tanks - it makes a mockery of it. There's enough space and injuries in England's first XI to require Jimmy in there to shepherd new ones in.
The chance of Robinson and Wood being fit for a series is near zero so there's your space.
From a sentimental stand point you don't treat England's greatest ever bowler like that when he obviously is playing close to how he has for the past ten years and wants to continue.

Some good points there. At the moment, there aren’t many I can think of running through county batting line ups who are walking into the England bowling line up. Problem is if the ones they try this summer don’t cut the mustard and they start chopping and changing the attack over the next year, they go down under in 18 months with a very raw crop of pace and seam bowlers and they’re banking on having a fully fit test match ready Jofra Archer by then.

As the former England captians says on performance overall he should play 1 more test. Especially as its the Home of Cricket , Lords it would be a fitting tribute to 1 of England's greatest bowlers. To play Test Cricket for 20 years or more is quiet outstanding. A test of deadition, fitness and the hunger to play at the highest level is simply remarkable achievement. To him his former captains , and present one Ben Stokes , Brenden McCullum , physics and coaching staff it's a testament to them also without doubt . Jimmy as had his injuries like anyone else , especially bowlers is partnership with Stuart Broad as been outstanding . Between them taking over a 1,000 Test Wickets an achievement in itself. So it's fitting James Anderson finishes on a high, let's hope he can beat Shane Warnes 708 Test Wickets . What a performance that would be , James Anderson a true English Legend 👏 👍 👌 🙌.

This is the downside to longevity. Broad and Anderson have been so good for so long we have never got to develop the next bowling line up. Like many I have mixed feelings about this. I understand the need to bring in younger blood but certainly in English conditions Anderson is still our best bowler.
Contrast that with the Archer situation. A player who has barely played in several years now yet has been giving more than enough opportunities and multiple selection opportunities without bowling himself into the team. There is no way he will survive long term, we should be moving on from him.
I think we will struggle. Wood is too unreliable injury wise. Robinson looks out of shape to me. Woakes is good in England but also has injury and age issues. I guess the future is Potts, Tongue and Atkinson. Maybe Porter or Cook will get a chance who knows.
Thanks Jimmy it is overused but you are a Superstar of the game certainly for England it has been a privilege to watch you.

Jimmy looks good to play for a while. This retirement might be mandated by the England coach.
I don't know how to feel about that. Wanting new blood in the team is right but it's not like every fast bowler is performing and so Jimmy must go. You can introduce new fast bowlers while keeping Jimmy in the team.
I think he is someone that should've been allowed to play until he wants, it's not like it was damaging the team. Being around him and learning the trade and fitness would also be beneficial to the new fast bowlers as England seems to struggle with keeping them fit.
Any case, all the respect to Jimmy, I have literally never seen an England squad that didn't have Jimmy in or around it. It is gonna be weird. Branderson is gone. All the best Jimmy Anderson.

What you have to remember is that Anderson played test cricket home and away continually twelve months of the year every year and it an amazing feat that he did that for so long. Steyn on the other hand generally only played test cricket from September to April, having a break from May to Sept. He only played full years on two instances when he toured England and he broke down both times during those years.

Anderson never felt comfortable with his changed action and not only did it make him less effective but also resulted in spinal stress fractures which put him out for nearly a year. After this Anderson went back to his original bowling action and basically started his test career again from the beginning.
