- I left a prototype set of Stringjoy Foxwoods on my father's Gibson SJ200 acoustic which is stored out in the open air for over a full year. In this video I am comparing them to a new set of Foxwoods and seeing how they held up.
I have never been a big fan of coated guitar strings, but these completely changed my mind!
If you like what you hear, grab a set from the good people at Stringjoy whenever is clever!

This was fun and informative. Never played coated strings myself, but any set that can sound that good after a year and a half is money very well spent!!
I’m sure it would vary with climate, but I was very surprised!
What a beautiful guitar. Cool.
Definitely! The family went together and got it for his birthday years ago. Its a great one!
That's pretty dang impressive
I was very pleasantly surprised with the results!
Definitely they are mellower, but I think they sound really cool and have a really impressive sound for the age they are. I like the warm tones of the old ones, although they lack some bite, usually there is too much bite on new strings (for my taste). Really, 1.5 year is too much for any string, and after just a couple weeks old I think they would sound perfect! Definitely gonna try them.
I keep going back an forth on which clip I prefer. 1.5 definitely is too long on paper, but I still really liked them! We sent a test set to Singapore (much hotter and muggier than the Portland, OR area where these were tested). The lady that tested them got about 4 months, which was still shocking considering the climate!
I tried the (light) Foxwoods on an old Washburn. Immediately, the tension was very high...finger-slicing high...and the sound was dull. After a day, the tension is still high but the resonance is much better. Head-to-head vs. Elixir Nanoweb, the Foxwoods do feel less "coated", but I don't notice any improvement on tone. The Elixirs are easier on my fingers but I will try another set of Foxwoods on a different guitar.
Well done Blake! Don’t sell yourself short on the playing (although the captions were hilarious). Those were great things to play to show off the strings. It is called “The Tone Mob” after all, not the “Don’t you wish you could play like me, mob”. I’ll have to try a couple of sets against my old standbys. :-)
Thank you dooood!
I always hear that J200 buzz. Replaced the nut and saddle on mine to eliminate it. Tried coated strings and thought they were too tinny. I think you sacrifice tone for laziness.
Are the plain strings treated?
How’s the string tension on those? Is it more or less than a traditionally set of naturals from string joy?
Bingo. They are mostly the same as the Naturals tension wise.
I want a string joy cryogenic set made like the Dean Markley Blue Steels. I have played those strings exclusively and know them better than some family members I have. I have to order Dean Markley from the manufacturer now as they are hard to get. I want the balanced set .009- .042 but cryo treated. My Dean Markley strings can stay on a guitar for as long as 2.5 years with little degradation at all…. Like these, when I change them, I get a little more top end chime…. The old ones stay in tune and could last probably 5 years if I was a betting man. Now I know this is not selling strings, when they last that long, but…. You will find loyal string customers always buying your brand, like I have with Dean Markley. Seriously though…. You guys could figure out how to blast the strings with nitrogen and sell cryogenic string….. like these Foxwoods…. You don’t like coated strings until now….. so this and send me a sample set please
We never say never, but I can definitely say “Not right now.” We simply have too many projects on the table that loads of people have been asking for. Perhaps someday though!
@@thetonemob you really are missing out on a market with this. How steel tempers and reacts to this treatment makes a rifle barrel 10x more accurate. It is impervious to hot and cold and stable for bending and twists. No other treatment does this to the extreme and even though Markley claims their proprietary process in the Blue Steels is their deal…. You could figure this out and make a place in the market that’s all yours too. I hope you send me the first set you try this process with. I look forward to all your new quests in strings…. Think outside the box is your way in !!
Sounds great, thanks for sharing! Not even Stringjoy's own channel has a video about them atm. Though they have sent me three separate emails about the Foxwoods since release lol... Hopefully this new method of making coated strings (which seems so obvious o.O lol) makes its way to the electric strings, soon :D
They’ll get there! It was partially cause I told Scott I was doing this one. I was a little late
To a certain extent, the most garbage, tarnished strings would still sound pretty good on that particular guitar though.
This is a great one, but I’ve played some mediocre SJs before.
